On the first day of a trip from Kyoto to Shiga, we started with lunch at this restaurant located in Takaragai, just a 30-minute drive from home. I have fond memories of dining here with colleagues when I used to work at a ryokan in Kyoto. It's a local spot that is quite inconvenient for tourists to reach, so mostly frequented by locals who drive here. It's a hidden gem for tourists! My friend wanted a delicious restaurant that represents Kyoto, so I chose this place. It had been 20 years since my last visit, so I was a bit worried if the taste had changed. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 1 pm and had to wait for about 10 minutes before being seated at a spacious table in the Western-style, high-ceilinged, open restaurant. Strangely, there was no background music, but once we started eating, we didn't even notice it (laughs). They offer three course options, and we chose the B course priced at 3190 yen. The course included yuba suri-nagashi, appetizers, yuba gratin, steak with beef fillet and yuba, rice, pickled mountain pepper, white miso soup, soy milk pudding, and coffee or tea or soy milk. The dishes were served with detailed explanations, and the service was excellent. The flavors were gentle and delicious, highlighting the ingredients. The standout dish was the yuba steak, where the yuba was deep-fried like thick tofu, crispy on the outside and juicy inside, a unique and tasty experience! The yuba chirimen sansho rice that my friend ordered was outstanding, and I would definitely order it next time! Although they no longer offer the experience of scooping up freshly made yuba using solid fuel like they did 20 years ago, the quality and value for money of the dishes were impressive. Overall, both my friend and I left satisfied with the high-quality food. Considering 80 points as the average score would be reasonable.
