Kissa, Luokissaru, Ookii, Saruo King!!!! Now, when I couldn't eat at a certain eel restaurant and was wondering what to do, I pulled out the "Tabelog" app!!!! It's so convenient and amazing!!!! So, I found a restaurant called "Kissa Luoh" Wookie! It's not Saru King, so don't get confused. Their curry rice is famous, so I ordered that without hesitation. And I also love coffee jelly, so I ordered that as well. Sri Lankan-style curry rice, large portion + cream coffee jelly (1200 yen + 680 yen including tax). The ingredients include one potato and about 3 pieces of beef. I was looking it up and some reviews mentioned chicken or pork, but when I looked at the pictures, it was indeed chicken or pork meat. The beef is a bit firm with some fiber, not too tender. The potato is large and fluffy, my favorite type of potato. Both ingredients seem to be cooked separately and then combined before serving. The curry, which I love, seems to be made with S&B's red can curry as a base, but with added flavors. It has a clean bitterness and depth, not the trendy spicy or bold flavors. It reminds me of the classic Showa era curry taste. I could eat this curry every day and not get tired of it. The cream coffee jelly is a signature dish with homemade ice cream on top. The coffee jelly is soft, similar to iced coffee. The ice cream has a strong egg yolk and vanilla essence flavor, reminiscent of old-fashioned sweet ice cream. It was delicious. The service was excellent, with two elderly women managing the place. They were very attentive, making the atmosphere very comfortable. This is a great place that will stand the test of time, and I will definitely visit again. Thank you for the meal!

I think the restaurants around Hongo Todai area are great. They have good service, quiet staff, and the food is made with care. Many of them play jazz music inside. They have a unique charm and taste that chain restaurants don't have, rooted in the local community. I think it's a really nice vibe.

★Located next to the Akamon gate on the Hongo campus of the University of Tokyo, there is a traditional coffee shop called "Cafe Luo" with a history of about 70 years. Situated near the Yasuda Auditorium of the University of Tokyo, stepping inside the cafe feels like traveling back in time to the vibrant Showa era when Japan was full of energy. As someone who worked part-time at a similar type of cafe during my university days, I felt very soothed while reminiscing about the passage of time.
■ Order Details
- Ceylon-style Curry Rice (Large) including tax: 1,200 yen
- Ceylon-style Curry Rice (Regular) including tax: 1,000 yen
I also requested a vegetable juice as a complimentary drink.
■ Impressions
- Visit on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, around 11:00 AM
The interior of the cafe was filled with elegant gentlemen and ladies, with classical music playing in the background. I ordered the highly-rated Ceylon-style Curry Rice on Tabelog with much anticipation.
- Ever since I found this place a few days ago, I had been looking forward to trying their curry.
★ The curry sauce was light and the spiciness gradually kicked in. The spices were perfectly balanced, making it a delicious curry.
- The meat in my curry was pork chunks.
- The potatoes were chunky and added a nice texture to the dish.
- Both the meat and potatoes seemed to be boiled separately, giving them a satisfying texture. It reminded me of the "Curry Shop" that used to be in front of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi department store a long time ago.
■ Atmosphere of the Cafe
- From around 11:00 AM until we left at around 12:30 PM, there was a constant flow of customers coming in and out. Truly a popular spot!
■ Location & Access
- It is located on the left side after crossing the signal at the main gate of the University of Tokyo.

I had the Ceylon-style curry rice set with iced coffee at a Showa retro-style cafe near the University of Tokyo's Akamon gate. The Ceylon-style curry rice was a specialty dish with a good balance of spices and just the right amount of spiciness. The iced coffee was also delicious. The atmosphere, music, and overall vibe of the cafe were very calming and authentic Showa retro. The taste was solid and satisfying. I also checked out the Hongo special feature in the Ad街 magazine.

On a holiday afternoon, I was surprised to find this place open despite the unstable business hours due to the approaching Obon season. Although I was familiar with it from the local area, I had never been inside before. I went upstairs to what seemed like a small gallery. Since I hadn't had lunch, I decided to try their specialty, the Ceylon curry, opting for a small portion. First, I was served pickles and Fukujinzuke. The Ceylon curry was not like the typical spicy ethnic curry, nor was it like a Western-style curry. It was somewhere in between, with chunks of meat and a mild thickness, and a moderate level of spiciness. Even though I chose a small portion, the curry had a generous amount of sauce, which made me think I could have used a bit more rice. After the meal, I was served a small iced coffee, which had a strong bitterness and was very delicious.

I visited the restaurant on Friday at 6 pm! It was a calm and pleasant place with classical music playing softly, and a warm and friendly staff. The atmosphere was perfect for quietly reading a book. The coffee I had was light and delicious, perfect for the evening. I would definitely visit again if I have the chance!

I visited the famous cafe, Kissa Luoh, known for its Ceylon-style curry, while attending the Tokyo University May Festival, which was open to the public for the first time in three years. The cafe is located diagonally to the left after crossing the road in front of the main gate of the university. Although it was past lunchtime, the cafe was full and I had to wait for about 10 minutes before being seated at the counter on the second floor. I ordered the Ceylon-style curry rice set with a small coffee for 1000 yen. The curry was a slightly thick, medium-spicy type that would appeal to most people. It had large pieces of pork and potatoes. The cafe's menu mainly consists of curry rice, except for toast. Many customers were enjoying the curry, and after I placed my order, I overheard the staff informing a new customer that the curry had sold out for the day. I recommend trying the famous Ceylon curry at Kissa Luoh. Thank you for the meal.

I enjoyed a coffee float and cake while looking out at the view from the second floor window. It was very relaxing and time passed by leisurely. The casual atmosphere was also nice. I'm curious about their curry too! Drinking a coffee float at an old-fashioned coffee shop is really great. I spent around 1200 yen on what I ate: coffee float and double chocolate cake.

At the café Luo in front of Todai, I had the curry for lunch. The curry here is apparently Ceylon-style curry... I'm not sure what exactly defines Ceylon curry, but this curry with a hint of spices is delicious. It's not a trendy flavor, but it evokes a nostalgic and delicious taste. It's not quite the taste of youth, but eating this curry makes me reminisce about my younger days.

Honjo Kissaryuo "Ceylon-style Curry Rice" is a retro cafe where painter and art collector Ken Morita opened as a gallery cafe in front of Akamon in 1952, and moved to the front of the University of Tokyo in 1980. The Ceylon-style curry served here is delicious. The name of the cafe is derived from the French painter Georges Rouault, and one of Rouault's paintings is displayed on the second floor. It is a lovely cafe with a total of 52 seats on the first and second floors. The beloved signature dish, Ceylon-style curry, is not Sri Lankan style, but was created by Mr. Morita's wife who learned the recipe from a hotel chef. It is a simple curry rice with plenty of curry poured over it, with a chunk of pork placed in the center. It is served with fukujinzuke and chopped leeks on the side. It seems that there are usually large pieces of potatoes as well, but they were out when I visited at night, so they may have added extra meat instead. The curry sauce has a gentle and mild taste with a hint of spices that come through later. The pork is cooked slowly until it is so tender that it falls apart easily. The meal comes with a drink, so I enjoyed an iced tea after eating. The background music is quiet classical music playing in the background. It was a delightful dining experience.

I visited this restaurant for lunch on Saturday as my second stop. I learned about this place from the famous book "Tokyo Curry Master's God Curry Guide 150" published about 20 years ago, and finally had the chance to visit. When I arrived around 1:25 PM, there were three customers on the first floor. I sat at a four-person table and looked at the menu. Of course, I ordered the Ceylon-style curry rice in a regular size. I chose iced coffee as the drink set. The condiments arrived first, and the Ceylon-style curry rice was served within 3 minutes of ordering. Despite the name being Ceylon-style, it is not Sri Lankan curry. The rice came with Fukujinzuke and sliced radish on the side. The curry was mildly spicy, with a strong tomato acidity and no sweetness. The curry had a surprising acidity, as it was not mentioned in various curry books I read. The ingredients included potatoes and some kind of meat. It looked like chicken, but I believe it was pork. The portion of rice was generous, and I finished it all as the curry with strong acidity was appetizing. I received the iced coffee after the meal, and I added gum syrup and milk. Perhaps the acidity was just a one-time thing, so I plan to order the same next time to confirm. Thank you for the meal.

Ceylon-style curry rice for 1000 yen including tax. I happened to have some errands nearby and stumbled upon this place for a meal afterwards. The seating was plentiful, with even a second floor available. It was close to closing time, so it was not crowded. The curry rice had two slices of meat and potatoes, with a rather light curry sauce that was surprisingly spicy and delicious. The Fukujinzuke and sliced pickled radish served on the side were also tasty. I opted for a hot semi-coffee at the end, although they also offer iced coffee. The seats were narrow and the chairs were hard, so it's not ideal for lingering, but the various decorations inside the restaurant, like a model of the shop's interior, were interesting.

I used to live nearby until about 2 years ago, so I could easily satisfy my craving for Luoh's curry rice anytime. After moving further away, I started missing its deliciousness. I came to Ueno for work after a long time, so I decided to have Luoh's curry before heading back... It has a light texture yet rich in flavor. You can feel the spices slowly seeping in. It's my number one curry. Plus, they even serve coffee after the meal. Fantastic!!

I finished my errands early in the morning and decided to visit Honjo, a special place I went out of my way to get to. It's a nice, old shop with a young male staff member, perhaps the owner's son. I ordered the curry set for breakfast. It was quite spicy. The large piece of meat in the middle was also tender. It must have been difficult to cook. Next time, I will go back for tea and cake.

I'm sorry for the half-eaten photo ^_^ The atmosphere of the restaurant is like a mountain hut, which is nice, and most importantly, the curry rice was delicious ^_^ It had a nostalgic taste, the meat was tender and tasty, and the curry had a rich flavor. The lady serving us was also very nice ^_^ I hope this kind of Showa-era atmosphere restaurant will continue to thrive for a long time!! I would love to visit again when I'm near the University of Tokyo ^_^

About 7 minutes from Todaimae and Hongo-Sanchome. Right in front of the main gate of the University of Tokyo. A retro Showa-style coffee shop. Ordered Ceylon-style curry rice. The curry sauce is light and smooth, but has a deep flavor and a unique spice that lingers. The coffee served as a service and the matcha roll dessert go perfectly together.

A quiet, classic café playing classical music. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service make customers feel at home. The second floor, with a view of the greenery on the University of Tokyo campus, is popular. The retro wooden chairs and tables add to the charm. They serve morning toast until 11 am, but their Sri Lankan-style curry is the highlight. It comes with a drink and has a lightly sweet taste with a hint of spices. The homemade ice cream is also delicious.

As you walk towards the direction of the University of Tokyo from Hongo Sanchome, you gradually start to smell the fragrance of gingko trees. Hongo Campus is known for its gingko tree-lined streets, so make sure to stop by on your way back. In front of the main gate of the University of Tokyo, there is a cafe called Luoh. It is a renowned cafe when it comes to discussing curry, and is one of the famous spots in this area. The quaint tent with an aged sign in a gingko color caught my attention, so I decided to step inside. The small interior was filled with students and even local elderly ladies, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The menu mainly consists of drinks and cakes, but they also offer a signature Ceylon-style curry (they also serve toast for breakfast). I asked the lady at the counter about the "small portion" of the Ceylon-style curry, and she replied, "It's about 70% of a regular portion." Realizing my mistake in asking the question, I thought to myself that in a student area, a regular portion is usually quite large, so a small portion would be sufficient for someone middle-aged like me. The classic music playing softly in the background, along with the paintings on the walls, added to the charm of the place. Soon, the curry arrived - a simple dish with chunks of pork and potatoes in a light, slightly thick curry sauce that evoked a sense of nostalgia. The gentle flavor with a subtle kick had a universal appeal that could be enjoyed by anyone. I mixed in the thinly sliced pickled radish with the curry, which may not have been the most elegant way to eat, but it enhanced the overall experience. The semi-coffee I ordered was nothing extraordinary, but it complemented the lingering spices in my mouth and brought a moment of awakening. It dawned on me that this entire experience might be what a Ceylon-style curry aims to achieve in an old-established cafe like this. I understood why they have such a limited food menu.

After 3 and a half years, I had the Ceylon-style curry rice at "Kissa Luo" for the first time. The curry sauce, with a good amount of spices, was just as delicious as before, with the same level of spiciness. The pickled radish and fukujinzuke were also tasty, especially the sweet and sour flavor of the pickled radish which paired perfectly with the curry rice. The coffee served in a demitasse cup had a nice aroma and bitterness, allowing me to savor it slowly. Although I felt like the potatoes and pork were slightly smaller, I can only say that everything was delicious. The cutouts in the chair backrest are probably meant for a coffee cup and saucer, and the wooden tables and chairs still exuded warmth without any changes. Thank you for the meal. I will definitely visit again.

The curry at the long-established coffee shop Luo in front of the main gate of the University of Tokyo was delicious. It was chicken curry and very tasty. The cake was so-so, but the iced coffee and hot coffee were delicious. It's a nice café, which is quite rare in Tokyo, so it made for a great date (*´(エ)`*)人@(*´●`*)@Hehehe

"I visited this cafe for the second time and this time I sat on the second floor, where I ordered cream coffee jelly and iced cafe au lait. A lovely elderly lady provided excellent service. The combination of vanilla ice cream and homemade coffee jelly was perfect. This cafe has a wonderful atmosphere!"
