I operate a curry blog focusing on the 23 wards of Tokyo. Tokyo Curry Magazine (https://tokyocurrymagazine.com/), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/tokyocurrymagazine/), Twitter (https://twitter.com/tokyocurry_mag), Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvI27eNjh-xk9Y2Hu_zotOA). Just a 5-minute walk from JR Kanda Station South Exit, down a narrow alley, you'll find the curry rice and bar restaurant "Honkokutei." I had been curious about this place as part of my quest to visit the top curry restaurants in Tokyo! They serve curry during bar time in the evening, but only offer lunch on weekdays. When I arrived at 11:30 am, I saw seasoned salarymen already lining up in front of the shop. Upon entering, the reserved owner gestured with one finger to ask if I was dining alone. When I nodded, he signaled where to sit. The menu offers 4 types of curry, all priced at 1,000 yen each. Toppings include cheese, soft-boiled egg, beef croquette, white fish fritter, sausage, hamburger, pork cutlet, potato salad, spinach, masala beans, and warm vegetables. I ordered the most popular "Keema Curry" based on prior research. The owner efficiently served the dish in a retro plate. The Keema Curry was generously sauced with large chunks of potatoes, well-cooked carrots, and spiced cabbage. It contained finely ground meat resembling meatballs. The curry was delightfully spicy, comparable to the heat of Bombay or Kashmir. I enjoyed it despite sweating a bit. This unique curry experience is why it's been selected as one of the top curry restaurants. The owner remained silent throughout, focusing on running the restaurant. I've heard he's a curry enthusiast, so I look forward to chatting with him someday.
