On this day, I visited the area around Azabu-Juban. This shop offers sweets made with vegetables. Not only using ingredients like pumpkin and sweet potato, but also tomatoes, ginger, spinach, celery, etc... which are not traditionally known to pair well with sweets. With the increasing health-conscious trend, this shop seems to be gaining more attention. They offer takeout options as well as a cafe menu. This was my second visit, and this time I visited during a different season. The shop also offers vegetable shaved ice, but it is only available in the summer. So, during my visit to Azabu-Juban, I decided to revisit the shop. In addition to shaved ice, I also decided to get some takeout items. During the summer, they offer shaved ice, while in other seasons, they provide parfaits, Mont Blanc, and more. Since it was over 35 degrees on the day of my visit, the cafe space was limited to 4 seats for 2 people each. They had also set up a terrace seat, but I was hesitant about it. The shop was quite busy with customers coming in for shaved ice, but I managed to secure a spot inside. The turnover was fast, so if it's full, it's better to wait unless you're in a hurry. They offer five types of shaved ice, with the limited edition Japanese black tea being particularly popular. However, I stuck to my original plan of trying the vegetable-based shaved ice. Here is what I tried: - Mini Tomato Shaved Ice: Tomato syrup with cream cheese and mini tomatoes stacked on shaved ice. The tomato flavor was refreshing with a perfect balance of acidity and sweetness. - Spinach Shaved Ice: Spinach paste with azuki beans on shaved ice. The spinach had a deep bitterness that paired well with the sweet azuki beans. - Vegetable Financier with Ginger: A financier cake with plenty of ginger mixed in and topped with ginger sugar. The spicy ginger added an interesting texture to the cake. - Vegetable Monaka with Lotus Root: A crispy monaka shell filled with vegetable paste and topped with sliced lotus root. The combination of the crunchy lotus root and creamy vegetable paste was harmonious. - Vegetable Mizuyokan with Tomato: A mizuyokan with whole ripe mini tomatoes inside. The sweet and juicy tomatoes made the dessert delightful. Overall, it was a treat to try vegetable-based shaved ice, and it was surprisingly delicious. It's a shame it's only available in the summer.
