In mid-June 2023, I stopped by Unatetsu to buy souvenirs. If you spend over a thousand yen, you get a free bag and can choose an original gift. The cafe at the entrance was closed on weekdays. The founder, Kazusuke Kobayashi, created sweet potato yokan as a more affordable alternative to the expensive refined yokan when the shop was established, and now, after 120 years, it has become a symbol of traditional Japanese sweets in Asakusa. As a child, I used to get excited when I received a boat-shaped package from Funa no Tsukasa, especially for the variety of sweet bean balls available. Now there are so many sweets to choose from that it's overwhelming! This time, I bought for myself: Sweet Potato Pie x2 at 150 yen each (excluding tax), Excellent Mochi x2 at 180 yen each, Lemon Pie x2 at 150 yen each, Black Warabi Mochi and Matcha Warabi Mochi at 200 yen each, Anmitsu with Small Red Beans at 380 yen, and Golden Sweet Potato Coin at 400 yen. I chose items that could last for a few days, as the fresh anmitsu has a short shelf life. They were all delicious, but the Excellent Mochi with lemon puree was particularly good. The kinako powder to sprinkle on the warabi mochi was made with Uji matcha for a slightly bitter taste, and the black kinako powder contained roasted soybeans, black rice, black beans, black sesame seeds, black pine nuts, and black chestnuts, showing attention to detail. What's more, the minimal use of additives was great. I still have more to try, so I will visit the second-floor parlor next time!
