Exploring around Ninen-zaka in Kyoto on my foodie trip, it's been a while since my school excursion to Kyoto. The city has a lovely atmosphere, perfect for taking picturesque photos. While walking along Ninen-zaka, I came across a shop selling plum products. They had various items including plum wine and high-quality umeboshi. I decided to try a single umeboshi which was being sold individually for 540 yen. It's as expensive as a bowl of ramen. I'm not a fan of sour foods, but this umeboshi had a sweet flavor with a mild saltiness. It was moist and had a smooth texture. They had a variety of umeboshi to choose from, ranging from low to high salt content, making it easy to find one that suits your taste. They also offer samples for you to try before purchasing. It was a delightful experience.

When it comes to umeboshi (pickled plums), I always associate them with Kishu, but it seems Kyoto is also quite famous for them. I found many shops along the way to Gion and Kiyomizu Temple, offering a variety of umeboshi for tasting. The staff kindly explained about the different types of umeboshi and even served us delicious umeboshi juice and tea. I felt bad not buying anything after trying so many, so I ended up purchasing some recommended ones as souvenirs. The Aota Ume from Joushuu Haku Kyoto, a precious plum orchard that has been preserved since the Edo period, was particularly fragrant with soft flesh. I also chose the Ume Ninniku (plum with garlic) which uses garlic from Aomori prefecture, so there's no lingering smell and it's great for the body. The Yae no Ume, plums pickled with purple shiso and bonito dashi, was also delicious and perfect with rice. The pack with four different types of umeboshi and Ume Ninniku was amazing! I definitely want to buy it again.

When you come to Kyoto, be sure to stop by this shop. They offer a variety of pickled plums that will change your concept of what pickled plums can be. You can sample different types of pickled plums, from ones with a gentle saltiness to ones with a sweet and mellow flavor, allowing you to find your favorite. They also have various products, including plum kombu tea and five types of plum wine which are delicious. It would be a shame to pass by this shop without knowing about it. I plan to buy my favorite pickled plums when I come back again.

I arrived in Gion, Kyoto ^_^ As I was strolling around Gion, I found a shop selling plums and other items! When feeling tired, eating pickled plums can give you a boost of energy, right❗️ Pickled plums really give you energy, don't theyヽ(´▽`)/ For the tasting, they only had garlic-related items...σ(^_^;) So I tried pickled plums with garlic and spicy pickled plums, and they were delicious^_^ I ended up buying the spicy pickled plums and the pickled plums with chili paste, and then I looked around the store^_^ They had pickled plums priced at 10,800 yen for 9 pieces! It's good for a year-end gift, but I have to taste it before buying, right (laughs) I don't eat rice much at home, but when I do, I eat garlic or pickled plums to stay energetic and lively! Thank you for the meal^_^971

Located in the middle of Ninen-zaka, the most Kyoto-like area, is a specialty store for pickled plums. I think there is a similar store in Arashiyama called Ousunomura. Whenever I come to this area, I always buy some pickled plums to take home. Inside the store, there are many products related to pickled plums lined up. The staff will greet you and offer you samples. They first ask about your preference - whether you like sour or sweet flavors. Since we prefer sweet, we tried 2-3 types of sweet pickled plums. Then we also tried some sour pickled plums that are still enjoyable for those who like sweet flavors. But in the end, we bought "Osho-san's Hidden Pickled Plums," which is on the sweet side. The naming is unique and nice! After that, we sampled some pickled vegetables with plum flavor, bought pickled burdock, tried plum kelp tea, tasted plum jam, and drank plum juice. It was truly a tasting feast. Thank you for the meal!

Whenever I go to Kyoto, my daughter always asks me to bring back this umeboshi for her. I usually purchase it at the Gion store, but this time I decided to stop by this shop on the way to Kiyomizu-dera, located on the middle of Ninen-zaka. In this shop, they offer various types of umeboshi for tasting, starting with umekobucha, and recommend different flavors with varying levels of acidity. On my first visit, I was unsure of my daughter's preference, so I bought a variety of types. However, I later discovered that she prefers "Miyabi no Ume," which has the least acidity and a sweetness from plenty of honey. I usually buy the 190g jar with about 8 large umeboshi for around 1300 yen, but this time I got the larger 490g jar for about 3200 yen, which my daughter was thrilled to see. She enjoys one umeboshi with tea every morning before work. Although we usually make our own umeboshi at home using traditional methods, this umeboshi is an exception. Every time I visit Kyoto, I purchase it as a souvenir for my daughter.

I have been relying on a plum-related shop for a long time. When I can't go to Kyoto, I also use their mail order service. When I enter the shop, the staff always greet me and offer me samples to taste. The plum tea they serve is delicious. They have a wide variety of plums with different levels of saltiness and sweetness. When I tell them my preference, they recommend a plum that matches it. Being able to taste before buying ensures that I never make a mistake. I highly recommend their "5 types of plum wine," each priced around ¥2000. Although I didn't get to try them, the set of 5 might be a good choice. Another recommendation is their "dried plums," which have a perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness with large grains. They are reasonably priced and have been a recent hit. I usually don't eat plums, but when I eat theirs, it feels familiar and delicious.

This is a long-established plum specialty store with its main store in Gion. The store is spacious and attracts many tourists due to its location. In addition to pickled plums, they also offer various products such as pickles and plum wine, but among them, the "White Jyu's Plum with Garlic" is incredibly delicious!!! While it may seem like a typical plum with garlic, the balance between the plum and garlic is exceptional thanks to this plum specialty store. The garlic flavor is minimal, not too spicy, not too sweet, and the perfect balance of acidity and flavor from the pickled plum makes it addictive. If you're unsure about the taste, you can try samples in the store before making a purchase, so you can buy with confidence after being satisfied.

The store was very crowded with female customers! Many people were trying out samples and choosing what to buy. I didn't really know what to get, so I just picked something that caught my eye. It was a not-too-sweet plum that went well with rice and Japanese dishes, and it was delicious. I also became curious about garlic plum...

The weather is nice and there is no one around, so I went to buy some local souvenirs. I bought some pickled plums. There are various high-quality pickled plums available, and you can try samples to choose from. Today, I chose plums with bonito flakes, slightly sweet, plums from Kyoto, and honey pickled plums. There are various preferences, and specialty stores are enjoyable! 🌟

Went on a year-end date in Kyoto with my wife. Splurged on delicious pickled plums. [Summary] Ume Hijiki (pickled plums with seaweed) for 1209 yen. It's on the sweet and sour side, not too salty, with the umami of seaweed, very easy to eat. Goes well with rice, mixed with natto rice, it's delicious no matter how you eat it. Can last for about six months.

The second installment of my daughter's Kyoto souvenir collection was from "Ouso no Sato" ♡ This shop has been devoted to making plums since the Tenpo era, and they offer a light and refreshing plum product that minimizes salt content while bringing out the natural flavor of the plum. Among the products using these plums, my daughter selected three items for me to try:
"Ume Hijiki" ... After trying various samples, this was the most delicious! The combination of plum and hijiki was surprisingly good, with a slightly sweet plum flavor that goes well with white rice.
"Hari Hari Ume" ... This pickled dish combines dried radish with plum and kelp, seasoned with soy sauce. The crunchy texture of the dried radish is addictive and would also be delicious chopped up and added to ochazuke.
"Kyoto Ume Kombu Tea (Rishiri Kombu)" ... This tea, introduced by the celebrity Sumire on a morning information show, is very delicious! It uses Rishiri kelp from Hokkaido, giving it a rich kelp flavor complemented by the refreshing acidity of the plum and the subtle aroma of perilla. Drinking this tea in the morning could give you the energy to tackle the day.
Plums contain citric acid, malic acid, and succinic acid, which are said to help recover from fatigue that can lead to summer fatigue, making them perfect for the upcoming season. My daughter made a nice choice for a tired mother like me.
