While out with a colleague for dinner, we couldn't get into the restaurant we wanted, so we ended up going to a nearby place that had availability. The food was decent and we enjoyed our meal. We started with beer, then moved on to plum wine. We ordered a variety of dishes, including some appetizers, fish, and meat dishes. The appetizers were as expected, and the meat dish had a strong flavor that went well with alcohol. For dessert, my colleague wanted some carbs, so we ordered rice balls. They were served with dried fish flakes on top and were delicious. The fact that they accept both cash and card payments is convenient.

I visited a restaurant near Shijo in Kyoto with the goal of eating something Kyoto-like as a tourist. I was able to achieve my goal by eating Kyoto-like dishes, including Kyoto vegetables, at a place called "Obanzai." I felt satisfied as a tourist being able to taste Kyoto at such an izakaya. Kyoto is truly amazing.

This year, 2021, started with the "Meat & Seafood 30 Battle" and was a year with many serialized stories, but after the last fried chicken story, we will have the "Chicken 20 Battle" and then the "Fried Chicken 20 Battle" with Year Matagi. Year Matagi Fried Chicken 20 Battle ~ Part 11 "Japanese Sake and Obanzai at Kyosakaba Kensui Nishiki Koji Store" (Kyoto, Karasuma) Chicken fried set meal for 750 yen. It was a failure. The fried chicken was thin and, above all, the rice was not good.

When it comes to Ken Sui Nishiki, a sake and obanzai (Kyoto-style small dishes) bar in Nishiki-Koji, Kyoto, it's all about the obanzai. This place offers a variety of Kyoto dishes in small portions, which is simply irresistible! They also have a drink-all-you-can plan with quite a selection of sake, so I couldn't resist. The lineup of sake was impressive and not too expensive, with a variety of drinks available, not just sake. The atmosphere from the appetizers is quite stylish. I ordered various menu items one after another. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the menu, so I can't accurately list the dish names, but dishes like yuba (tofu skin) and fu (wheat gluten) all paired well with the sake! Kyoto cuisine is just delicious. I enjoyed my meal. Thank you.

I also tried going here based on the Sashi Nomi (standing bar) page in the Choi Nomihodai (drinking all you can) guidebook. It was ¥1500 for 2 hours of all-you-can-drink with oden (Japanese hot pot) included. I was a bit skeptical about the food since it was all-you-can-drink, and as I expected, it was quite different from the photos in the book (tears). Well, I gave up and ordered some additional dishes. In the end, it cost over ¥2000, but since it came with all-you-can-drink, I guess it's unavoidable. The staff's service was a bit lacking. They weren't very friendly, but maybe that's just how young people are these days. Or perhaps they were just tired as they mentioned they were busy.

Today, I went to an izakaya on Nishiki Koji Street with a gym friend I hadn't seen in a while. The restaurant, Kensui, offers a variety of dishes made with Kyoto vegetables and a selection of Japanese sake. It was quite crowded inside, being a Friday. We sat at the counter and enjoyed the following dishes: - Tonic Water: A platter of assorted obanzai dishes - Shredded Daikon, Hijiki, and Koya Tofu: A generous serving of these traditional Japanese side dishes - Udo, Edamame, Quail Egg, Smoked Egg, and Sliced Tomato: A visually appealing dish with flavorful quail eggs - Sashimi Assortment: Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, Sea Bream, and Bonito sashimi, all fresh and delicious - Fried Chicken Cartilage: Crispy and flavorful, a classic izakaya dish Overall, the food was delicious and satisfying, with a good value drink-all-you-can course. I had a great time catching up with my friend and enjoying the food at Kensui.

Visited in April 2019 with a rating of 3.15 on Tabelog (11 reviews). Seafood bowl for 950 yen. Today's lunch was at this restaurant located in Nishiki Market shopping street. The store is on the 2nd floor, with menu boards and photos under the stairs as a sign. I was the first one there, a bit early. The menu included various lunch options, but I decided on the seafood bowl. Other lunch options included Kyoto set meal for 1,700 yen, fried chicken for 800 yen, grilled fish for 850 yen, sashimi for 1,150 yen, chicken ginger stir-fry for 900 yen. The seafood bowl came with sides like freeze-dried tofu, hijiki, soup, pickles. The freeze-dried tofu was not my favorite, but it's good for health. The hijiki was a bit strong in flavor, but good. The main seafood bowl had a large shrimp in the center, with salmon, tuna, and yellowtail around it. The shrimp was juicy and the toppings of shiso leaf and salmon roe were a nice touch. The pickled ginger added a nice contrast. Overall, a satisfying meal.

The restaurant has about 4.5 table seats and probably a few counter seats. They offer over 20 types of Japanese sake, allowing customers to compare different options. The menu includes dishes like cheese omelette with dashi broth and simmered fish, which were very satisfying. I definitely want to go back!

I was able to eat obanzai at this restaurant! I arrived at 7:00 pm and since it is located in Nishiki Market, it was not very crowded and I was able to get seated right away. The food was delicious despite being lightly seasoned, and I was able to enjoy Kyoto-style dishes.

Grilled fish set meal! On this day, it was mackerel. It was a generous portion. I was happy that it came with two side dishes. The pickles were also delicious. You can add a drink set for just 150 yen more and it seems you can also have alcohol. There are many other menu options, so I will definitely visit again!

Seafood bowl is the best!

I revisited a favorite restaurant and had a great time with friends. We ordered a variety of dishes including raw fish, horse sashimi, fried chicken wings, sea cucumber vinegar, salted sea squirt, homemade pickles, grilled mentaiko, potato salad, and more. The prices were reasonable, with dishes ranging from 280 to 880 yen. We enjoyed wine, shochu, and sake, and ended up splitting the bill at 4200 yen. The atmosphere was lively, and I plan to visit again soon.

In November 2015, the last day of sightseeing in Kyoto. I bought some obanzai at Nishiki Market and had a little meal. I asked "Hanamai Nishiki Market" if it was okay to just have dinner, and they kindly agreed. I ordered the obanzai set for ¥850 and the sashimi set for ¥890. Even at night, the prices were so reasonable. Plus, you can get free refills of rice, miso soup, and small side dishes! The obanzai included simmered hijiki, pumpkin, burdock, and eggplant. The flavors were comforting and heartwarming. The sashimi included bonito, tuna, yellowtail, and salmon. The sashimi was fresh and delicious! Such a great deal! Even though I said I only wanted rice, I ended up adding an oden set (oden and a glass of sake) for ¥1100. The oden had daikon radish, konjac, beef tongue, and fish cake. The seasoning was a bit strong, but it went well with the sake! It would be nice if there were restaurants like this in my hometown of Tokyo.
