When I came before, it was full and couldn't get in, but since it was a weekday, I was able to get in right away! I had highballs, sake, and fried horse mackerel with green peppers and potatoes! There were many interesting posters inside the store! It was a bit disappointing that they didn't have rolled omelette. The atmosphere was like a clean and bright version of a village house, and it seemed like smoking was allowed. The prices were just right and affordable for students! The customers ranged from working adults to university students and foreigners. I would love to go again!

On a certain weekend, I had plans to have a Kyoto drinking session with my close friends, so I went to Shijo Kawaramachi a little early to have a pre-drinks with my husband at this place we visited for the first time in about 2 years. The reservation was made by my friends near the restaurant where we used to visit with our group exhibition members. We sat at a large table on the first floor. The ice-cold draft beer served in a frosted glass was so delicious. I ordered some onion rings as a snack. The other members arrived early as well, so we had a beer each and quickly paid the bill. The kind staff at the restaurant even guided us to the next venue for our first round of drinks. So helpful... ◎ For more details, please check out my blog [Kokoroma's "ma"] https://ameblo.jp/39lohas/entry-12494470650.html

Specialty dish: Plate Udon. It's udon, not fried noodles.

The restaurant is not particularly clean, but the food is delicious and comes in generous portions, which is great for big eaters. And it's cheap. We ate and drank to our hearts' content and it only cost a little over 5,000 yen for two people. Plus, they serve Ebisu beer in bottles, which is good.

It was an at-home, calming restaurant. It made me feel like I was back in my younger days. I got a bit drunk on whiskey, but I wonder what brand it was ☺️ haha

Located a little down from Shijo Kawaramachi, this restaurant is a place I haven't been to since my university days. Back then, it was famous for opening bottle caps with disposable chopsticks. The former manager was particularly skilled at it, and I remember watching him on KBS Kyoto where he showcased his talent, making bottle caps pop off like champagne when tapped on the bottom of the bottle. After that, the manager opened his own shop in Kiyamachi, but sadly passed away a few years later, and the shop is no longer there. In the past reviews of this place, it was mentioned as being a direct store of the Fushimi sake brewery, Shoutoku Brewery. I couldn't confirm that, but it is listed as a place where you can enjoy their sake. The restaurant is located on the first floor of a mixed-use building, with stairs leading to a basement floor as well. The walls are covered with posters, giving it a multicultural, eclectic vibe that fits the name "Mukokuseki" or "international". There are many students and foreign customers, and the menu includes English options. I ordered a Heartland beer and the famous plate udon. The bottle was already opened, so perhaps they no longer use chopsticks for that, or maybe the staff member was unable to do it since they were alone. I also remember drinks being served with ice, but that wasn't the case this time. The plate udon was served on a large plate, easily over 30 centimeters in diameter (shown with chopsticks for scale). It was not the fried noodles like in Nagasaki, but regular udon in a traditional Japanese broth. It was filled with plenty of cabbage, which is great in this era of expensive vegetables. And it was delicious! The flavor of the Japanese broth was so rich and comforting. With time running out, I had to leave after this dish. I look forward to coming back at an earlier time next time. The cost performance is quite good. Established in 1975, this place still retains the chaotic, counterculture atmosphere from the student movements of the Kyoto University-centered underground scene at that time.

I was looking for an izakaya and stumbled upon this place. The unique atmosphere of the restaurant instantly lifted my spirits. The prices for food and drinks were reasonable, which made me happy. I ordered fried tofu in dashi broth, fried squid, braised pork tendons, along with some chu-hai and beer. The portions were generous and I left feeling satisfied. The atmosphere was also great. It was an affordable, delicious, and enjoyable izakaya experience!

It's a shop that has been around for a long time, with nostalgic voices from those around me. It was my first time there. There were various things posted on the walls, giving it a cozy feeling like visiting a friend's house. We kept ordering whatever we wanted to eat, and I only took photos of the dishes that were photogenic. The next day when I checked Facebook, I saw many photos of dishes taken by my friends. I had eaten so much just a while ago. I had a highball and then drank some sake, and I got quite drunk. I was satisfied after eating my favorite fried oysters. If I had known about this place when I was in college, I would have definitely spent a lot of time here.

The famous plate udon is amazing! Kyoto Kawaramachi Earth Shop After finishing my day job, I took the Hankyu train with my coworkers to Kyoto Kawaramachi. There was a shop that caught my attention, so we decided to go there! The shop is called "Earth Shop". Inside the shop, there are large tables surrounded by sunken kotatsu, creating a cozy atmosphere where customers can relax. Posters related to live events are pasted all over the walls, giving the place a chaotic yet comfortable feel. Drinks range from 350 yen, with options like Oolong Highball for 350 yen and draft beer for 400 yen! Cheers~ We ordered Onion Rings for 400 yen as a snack. Onion rings are delicious no matter where you eat them, right? That made me crave for Dashimaki Tamago for 350 yen, so I ordered that too! It's a hefty portion of dashimaki tamago, which I immediately dug into! It doesn't have a strong dashi flavor, more like a savory egg omelette. It tastes just right when you pour soy sauce on it. Next, I decided to try the rumored plate udon for 600 yen! What?! It's served in a plate with a diameter of over 30 cm! How are we supposed to finish this (laughs) You can see the size comparison with the soy sauce bottle... And there's plenty of vegetables in it, perfect for those who need more veggies. The noodles are just regular udon noodles. But what surprised me the most was the amount of toppings! My friend and I shared it, but at that point, we were already stuffed, our stomachs were bursting. As for the taste, it's simply delicious. There were a lot of young customers, so I thought it's a shop more suited for students and young people! Thank you for the meal. ☆Basic Information☆ Address: 1F Shoutoku Building, Sanjo-Kawaramachi Higashi-iru, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Opening Hours: 17:00-24:00 Closed on: Open daily Difficulty of Entry: ★★★☆☆ (Moderate) I recommend going with a group.

I didn't feel like being around people, so I decided to go to Gion, maybe even to Kuraudo. I wanted to blend in with the crowd and ended up in the bustling streets of Shijo. By chance, I ran into my friend Moto (A, today's victim). Kuraudo seemed to be closed, so Moto and I decided to have a drink at Chikyuya and then head home. This place, where I used to come often over 30 years ago, is frequented by people from various countries, just like its name suggests. It's a shop directly managed by Fushimi's sake brewery, and it still maintains its friendly and casual business style. The contrast of good, cheap, fast, and delicious is quite stimulating. I can't miss the classic dish of sara udon, along with the deep-fried cheese and dashimaki. To be continued.

Located on the third street down from Shijo Kawaramachi in Kyoto, is Chikyuya! This is the third stop on our Kyoto drinking tour. By this point, our stomachs were starting to settle, so we were looking for something a bit more interesting. Chikyuya is a budget-friendly izakaya that students love for its generous portions. The interior is covered with various flyers, and it seems to be a popular spot for musicians. According to reviews, they even open bottled beer with chopsticks, which sounded like fun! We ordered a bottle of beer, which turned out to be Ebisu - quite a rare find! I tried asking the musician-looking staff member if they could open the bottle with chopsticks, but unfortunately, they said they couldn't do it at the moment. Oh well, the Ebisu beer was still delicious! The food here is very affordable and would be great for a quick bite and drink during a second round of drinks. We tried the Kimchi Chijimi, and now it's time to move on to the next spot! Thank you for the meal!

The other day, I went out drinking with four old friends at this place called "Chikyuya." A friend had mentioned using this place for drinking parties and such, so we decided to have our gathering here this time. The place has a first floor and a basement, and we were guided to a sunken kotatsu seating area upon entering. It was not too crowded, so we could relax and drink without worrying about sharing tables with others. The prices here are really cheap. The food overall seems to be about 100-200 yen cheaper than other izakayas. Perhaps they are targeting Kyoto students around this area. The customer base seemed to be mostly young people. Based on reviews, we ordered the plate udon, and it was indeed a large portion. The cartilage fried chicken and potatoes were decent, and the rolled omelette was big and delicious. We ordered Ebisu beer in bottles, and the staff opened them with an ashtray, giving off a somewhat old-fashioned vibe. The atmosphere was cozy and not too noisy, so we kept drinking beer and before we knew it, the four of us had finished about 12 bottles and ate a lot of food. I was worried about the bill, but it turned out to be around 3000 yen per person, which surprised me. The cost performance is excellent. The interior is cluttered with various photos, signs, etc., but it adds to the charm in my opinion. I quite liked it. It's a good place for a lively drinking session with friends. It was a great meal.

A pub located a little south of Shijo Kawaramachi, established in 1975 and frequented by famous musicians. I visited for a second round and was led to the basement floor where there were sunken kotatsu-style seats to relax. The prices were very affordable, with appetizers starting at around 200 yen and most food and drink items in the 300 yen range. There were hardly any items over 500 yen. I ordered the famous plate udon, pork kimchi, and a drink. The plate udon was served in a large bowl over 30cm in diameter, with a light Chinese-style sauce, cabbage, green onions, and plenty of toppings like bonito flakes and seaweed. Despite the generous portion, it was light and easy on the stomach. The price of 630 yen was also attractive. The other menu items were reasonably priced and enjoyable. I ordered a few items and drinks, and the total bill came to just over 4,000 yen. The real charm of this place lies in the unique atmosphere cultivated over 30 years. The dim lighting from light bulbs, Western music playing in the background, and walls covered with graffiti, newspaper clippings, posters, and flyers left by customers over the years. The nostalgic atmosphere is something that cannot be intentionally recreated, making it a place worth preserving. Despite the initial impression that Kyoto can be exclusive, this place showcases a different side of the city that is welcoming to all, especially students. It's a place where newcomers can enjoy a different side of Kyoto, while those who spent their student years in the city can reminisce. As a side note, when you order a bottled beer, they perform a unique trick of opening the bottle with chopsticks. Be sure to experience this as well.

The inside of the shop feels like a friend's house, cozy and filled with posters and photos on the walls. The alcohol is reasonably priced. The portion sizes for the food are quite generous, so it would satisfy someone with a big appetite. The taste is subjective, but personally I was a little hesitant about it.

This izakaya has been around for decades and has a unique atmosphere that attracts many foreign visitors. The prices are very reasonable, making it a great place to drink and have fun with friends. The dishes are all generously portioned, with the plate udon being a popular choice. It's a large dish that can serve 3-4 people for only 680 yen, which is quite a deal! The drinks are also affordable, with a large bottle of Ebisu beer priced at around 680 yen. The restaurant has two floors, but the server on duty managed to handle all the customers by themselves, even though it was packed. Despite the full house, there were no delays in taking orders, and we had a great time!
