When you visit Kyoto, be sure to stop by "Shizuya" at the Keihan Gion Shijo store. I went there to try their popular dish, "Carne". I saw on a TV show that Sand no Date-san was buying it in bulk. The fluffy French bread, smooth margarine, and the way they sandwich the ham and onions show their attention to detail. This time, I bought the "Cheese Carne (290 yen)" for the first time. The combination of cheddar cheese, boneless ham, and onion slices on French bread was excellent. When heated, the cheese became gooey and even more delicious.

There are many popular carne asada dishes available for delivery, but unfortunately, the onion rice inside doesn't freeze well, as advised by the salesperson. It's a shame that it's only available in Kansai. Today, I bought the newly released 5-cheese pizza with a lot of attention to detail.

A while ago, my daughter bought me some bread from "Shizuya." I had been wanting to try their "Carne" and "Original Beef Cutlet Sandwich" for a while, but whenever I visited Kyoto, I always forgot to buy them haha. The "Carne" was so fluffy and chewy, with a delicious accent of onions. It was so good, I think I'm hooked! The other breads were tasty too, but the "Carne" left a lasting impression.

At Shizuya in the underground shopping area of Keihan Gion-Shijo Station, I was drawn to their unique soft serve ice cream, but I stayed true to my original plan and tried the Pepper Carne for 240 yen. It consisted of semi-hard bread filled with ham and mayonnaise mixed with onions, topped with black pepper. The perfect balance of flavors made it incredibly delicious. This is definitely a must-try here. They accept PayPay and LINE Pay.

When I casually visited Kyoto on a regular day, my go-to treat is the carne from Shizuya. After shopping at Nishiki Market, I planned to head back home on the Hankyu train from Shijo Kawaramachi, but wait, there's no Shizuya at Hankyu station. So, I walked a bit further to my usual Keihan Gion Shijo store. The regular carne was sold out, but they had about 10 pepper carnes left. I immediately grabbed two, and also found a miso katsu sandwich. And it's a Gion Shijo store exclusive! The next morning, I heated up the sandwich in the toaster. It was a bit too thick, so I accidentally burnt it. The miso katsu sandwich is made with tonkatsu sandwiched between a sesame-coated baguette, with miso sauce. Despite the burnt edges, it was crispy and delicious. The burnt pepper carne reminded me of the burnt bread I saw at the Pompeii exhibition at Kyoto Ceramic Museum before summer. I scraped off the burnt parts and enjoyed it as usual. Cabbage-filled miso katsu sandwich 440 yen, Pepper carne 240 yen x 2.

Less than 3 years since I last visited Kyoto ❤️ My favorite bakery in Kyoto is SIZUYA ❤️ I noticed that they now have a Danish Carne at SIZUYA, but I prefer the hard bread, so the Pepper Carne is delicious ❤️ The Pepper Carne is ¥220 and the Danish Carne is ¥230. They give out free bags at the register, which is nice ❤️ SIZUYA is located at Keihan Gion Shijo Station in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City. #KyotoGourmet #KyotoFoodTour #KyotoFoodCrawl #sizuya #SIZUYABakery #SIZUYACarne #PepperCarne #DanishCarne #DeliciousWhenHeated #BonelessHam #Onisura #CarneMargarine #BlackPepper #PerfectWithBeer #Higashiyama-ku #GionShijoStation #KyotoBakery #SoulFoodForKyotoLocals #KyotoGourmetClub #Ikura-chan'sFoodCrawlInHyogoPrefecture

Located inside Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line, this is one of the branches of "Shizuya," which can be found in various locations throughout Kyoto. Their most famous item is the "Karne," a simple sandwich made with ham, onions, and margarine sandwiched between French bread. It is a representative B-grade gourmet food of Kyoto. In addition to the Karne, I also bought a beef cutlet sandwich and salt bread to take home. While the bread was comforting, it lacked a special impression and left me feeling slightly unsatisfied. They also offer refrigerated gifts, making it a recommended souvenir for Kyoto sightseeing.

Shizuya-san has a breakfast option along with Starbucks, a Danish version of Karne, which I didn't know about. I tried it and the French bread version is definitely better. The egg sandwich, along with Karne, was delicious! It was a taste I hadn't had in a long time.

I bought my usual carne and pepper carne, but I discovered something unfamiliar - karinto manju! It's huge! It's the same size as the carnes. And considering it's a "karinto manju," it's actually quite cheap. I see, it's because it uses sweet potato paste instead of red bean paste. I warmed it up a bit in the toaster. The sweet potato paste, bread dough, and the fried outer layer oil are delicious. Due to its large size, it feels lighter than other karinto manju because it has less oil. This is great! The only issue was when cutting it in half, the paste was uneven, causing a bit of unfairness. But I was on the side with more paste, so I didn't mind at all! Karinto manju for 150 yen including tax.

Speaking of Shitsuya, their Carne is famous. I had never eaten it straight from the store, but I heard it's delicious when warmed up in a toaster oven, so I lightly heated it and tried it. The outside was crispy while the inside of the bread was soft, and the ham and onions were still cool - it was delicious! While it's nice to buy and eat it by the Kamogawa river, this way is also good. On another day, I enjoyed the volume of their familiar Beef Cutlet Sandwich, as well as regular sandwiches and soft cream bread. They weren't as good as Carne, but they were still tasty and enjoyable.

The classic carne asada is delicious, but when warmed up in a toaster oven, the texture completely changes. The outside becomes crispy, the inside is soft, and the filling remains cold. It's the best! I haven't used the toaster oven in a while since I have a pop-up toaster, but it's great to use it again. Carne asada 210x2.

I drank a lot at an all-you-can-drink earlier, so I feel like buying more chu-hai. It's only 7:30 PM, so I'll eat some bread and call it a day. This place has been around since 1948 and has 22 stores, quite impressive. I've never bought from here before. Carne seems to be a popular bread here. It's like a soft French bread sandwich, but it's fluffy. It's based on the German Kaiser Semmel. It has ham, crunchy onions, and a smooth margarine. Oh, it's not butter, it's margarine. Well, it has a gentle and fluffy texture with a nice French bread feel. It's delicious.

▼Location▼ Located inside the Keihan Gion Shijo Station (outside the ticket gates). ▼About the Shop▼ Shizuya - Established in 1948, this bakery chain is a representative of Kyoto. The name "Shizuya" comes from the founder's wife, Shizuko. It is a favorite among Kyoto residents who are known for their love of bread. The Keihan Gion Shijo branch is located inside the station. ▼Menu▼ They offer a variety of signature items such as Carne, side dish bread, and sweet bread. ▼Food Tried▼ - Lemon Cream Bread: 190 yen (Visited in August 2021) As the name suggests, this bread contains lemon cream. The fluffy dough with a slightly sweet and sour lemon cream filling is quite delightful. The cream's sweetness blends well with the fluffy texture, while the crispy edges of the dough complement the tangy cream nicely. ▼Impressions▼ (Visited in August 2021) Shizuya is a bakery chain beloved by Kyoto residents for many years. Established in 1948, they now have over 20 stores in Kyoto city. Known for their popular Carne bread, they are a well-known bakery chain in Kyoto. The Keihan Gion Shijo branch, located at the end of the station, was where I purchased the above bread after visiting a temple. I was intrigued by the unique bread and found it not only interesting but also delicious. They have a variety of interesting bread options, so I look forward to visiting again.

I decided to try the "Nomitetsu" experience before boarding the train. I thought, "Since I'm here, why not buy something from Shizuya?" So, I purchased a sandwich - a beef cutlet and fluffy omelet sandwich (a half & half combo) along with soft serve ice cream. I used to associate Shizuya with "carne," but now I want to explore their sandwiches and soft serve as well. Thanks to this, I had a fun train journey.

I left the retro Western restaurant feeling unsatisfied both emotionally and in my stomach, so I decided to come here. I didn't know there was a place like Shizuya in this area. In addition to the carne, I ordered the "Roast Beef and Creamy Egg Mix Sandwich". The half size is apparently exclusive to this place. The sandwich is divided into roast beef and egg, and roast beef and tomato. The bread is fluffy. The egg is indeed creamy and half-cooked. The sauce on the roast beef is a bit sweet for my taste. I preferred the combination of roast beef and tomato over the roast beef and egg.

I enjoyed a day of indulging in Kyoto's delicious food and now I am heading back to my hotel in Osaka. While at the station, I found a bakery in the station building selling fancy-looking anpan. I decided to try one called WAGURI for 260 yen. The bag alone gave off a luxurious vibe. When I opened it, I found a firm bread filled with sweet red bean paste and chunks of chestnuts inside. Even though I'm not a big fan of chestnuts, I still bought WAGURI... I'm surprised at my own actions (laughs). The chestnuts had a firm texture, the sweet red bean paste was tasty, and the bread was also firm. Overall, it was a delicious anpan. Thank you for the meal!

On the second day of my Osaka trip, I went to Kyoto for the day. After enjoying Kyoto, I went to the coin locker to pick up my belongings and found a bakery there! I couldn't resist stopping by. After eating various snacks and feeling quite full, I thought something light would be good. But then I saw some stylish sweet bean buns! Among the many varieties, I decided to try the No. 1 popular one. Inside was a whole chestnut. I took a bite... the balance of chestnut, sweet bean paste, and bread was really good and delicious. I can see why it's so popular! It's small, so it's perfect for satisfying a small hunger. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Established in 1948, this is a long-standing bakery in Kyoto. They have multiple stores in Kyoto and sell delicious handmade bread with a homemade feel. On this day, I bought a Carne sandwich to eat on the Shinkansen ride back. The French bread sandwich was delicious and reasonably priced. I wish they had a store in Tokyo too. There are many delicious bakeries in Kyoto, could it be that this shop was the start of it all?

I purchased salt bread and curry sausage bread. They cost around 350 yen for both. The salt bread was normal and tasty. The curry sausage bread had a lot of curry filling, more than I expected, and I would like to buy it again.

Around 8:00 PM on November 8, 2019 (Friday), on my way back from work near Shijo Kawaramachi, I was thinking of buying a little something as a souvenir on my way to the station. However, the shops along the way were already closed after 8:00 PM. When I arrived at Gion Shijo Station and walked through the underground passage, I noticed a few shops on the other side of the ticket counter. Among them was "Shizuya Kyoto Gion Shijo Store." I saw a corner with stylishly packaged anpan. Without hesitation, I decided on the following: - Rich Matcha Anpan (230 yen) - Black Bean Yuzu Anpan (220 yen) - Sweet Chestnut Anpan (250 yen) - Cinnamon Anpan (220 yen) - Matcha and Sweet Red Bean Anpan (230 yen) Total of 5 items for 1,150 yen (tax included). The anpan was placed in a long, beautiful gift box. The appearance of the anpan was quite unique, making it interesting. When I ate it, I found the bread part to be very thin, with a variety of fillings inside, which was nice. Thank you for the delicious treat! ♡♡♡♡
