I wanted to order the lemon ramen, but played it safe and went for the chicken white ramen for 990 yen, with an additional 250 yen for extra chashu. The ramen was delicious. The restaurant has a traditional Kyoto atmosphere, allowing you to experience the Kyoto vibe while enjoying your meal.

It seems that they moved from Gion to a townhouse in the city center. Inside, there is a surprisingly deep layout typical of a townhouse. Beyond the tsuboniwa (courtyard) there are private room-style seats. The staff are all women, wearing black tops and bottoms, working efficiently. The large serving of tsukemen (dipping noodles) has flat, thick noodles with bonito powder on top and a strong bonito broth. The saltiness is not overpowering, making it a comforting dish to enjoy. The couple next to me seemed to be French. I slurped my noodles quietly so as not to be rude.

The restaurant was long and there was only one other group there, yet we were seated at the same table for some reason. Another person who came later was also seated at our table, creating an awkward atmosphere. Despite there being no other customers at the table, it was difficult to get the attention of the staff when ordering. The ramen was neither good nor bad, just average. The location, interior, and atmosphere of the restaurant were nice, but overall it felt like a missed opportunity.

On the second day of my casual trip to Kyoto, many tourist spots and restaurants were temporarily closed due to the typhoon. However, I managed to wait until 1:00 pm to finally visit Ramen Muraji, a place I really wanted to go. It was worth the wait! This was my first time visiting their new location since they moved from Gion. As always, their tsukemen (dipping noodles), teppan chahan (iron plate fried rice), and karaage (fried chicken) were delicious. I should have gotten extra noodles! The matcha ice cream for dessert was also great. It was a bit disappointing that the proprietress was not there this time, but overall, I was very satisfied with my meal at Ramen Muraji.

Menya Muraji Gion Honten has relocated. The new location is on Yanaginobamba-dori, just below Rokkaku. The interior of the restaurant has been renovated from a traditional Kyoto townhouse, with a small garden in the back. The atmosphere is very Kyoto-like, attracting many foreign tourists. I tried their dipping noodles (1150 yen), which were served in just over 10 minutes. The noodles were thick and chewy, and came topped with freshly fried burdock chips. I enjoyed dipping them in the hot and flavorful Japanese-style dipping sauce. The sauce also had pieces of chicken, bamboo shoots, and chopped onions. Considering the quality of the ingredients, the price of 1150 yen may seem a bit high. Overall, it was a delicious meal.

Gion Men-dokoro Muraji - Chicken Shio Ramen with Ajitama I wanted to taste the original flavor of the chicken shio ramen, so I ordered the chicken shio. The soup is rich with the umami of chicken. I bet it would taste great if used for sukiyaki as well. The deep-fried burdock adds a nice touch to the ramen. #ramen #chinesenoodles #chickenshioramen #chickenshiosoup #ajitama #kyotoramen #kyotogram #kyotoramenclub #kyotolunch #kyotogourmet #kyoto #yanaginobabarokkaku #gionmendokoromuraji #mendokoromuraji

A popular ramen restaurant, born from the desire to create a place where women can easily dine alone, has been relocated and renovated. The cozy interior, with a touch of Kyoto's elegance, features a rare "separate" seating area accessed through a small garden. The menu offers four types of ramen: Chicken White Ramen (990 yen), Chicken Black Ramen (990 yen), Lemon Ramen (1100 yen), and Muraji Tsukemen (1150 yen). There are also set menus and side dishes available. This time, I ordered the Lemon Ramen, which I always get when I come to Muraji. The rich and refreshing chicken broth, simmered for a whole day, is complemented by slices of lemon, adding a refreshing touch to the bowl. The cute appearance, along with the homemade straight noodles that pair perfectly with the broth, makes this a delightful and addictive dish.

I visited the restaurant on April 11, 2023, before 7 pm, and the place was about 60% full. I sat at the designated counter seat and ordered the Black Chicken Paitan. It seemed like the restaurant had just opened as the kitchen was a bit chaotic. However, I believe they will improve soon. The customers inside all seemed like tourists, which is expected given the location. It took about 10 minutes for the bowl to arrive. The fried burdock was a unique touch to the dish.

Visited in April 2023 ◎ No Tabelog score at the time of visit (2 reviews) ■ Lemon Ramen 1,100 yen I visited "Menya Muraji," which opened in Gion on April 6th (Tue) for lunch. The restaurant has a charming atmosphere, reminiscent of a renovated Kyoto townhouse, with a large 8-seater table visible from the outside. There are also counter seats, 2-seater tables, and rooms in the back separated by a courtyard. Most of the customers around me were foreigners, and I wonder where they get information about the restaurant from! I was torn between the tsukemen and the "Lemon Ramen," which seemed to be the signature dish, so I ordered the latter. You can get a "boiled egg" with your order if you post on social media ( ´∀` )b The bowl was filled with lemon slices, chicken chashu, and bamboo shoots, and the boiled egg that was forgotten was served separately later (^^ゞ I think the boiled egg was probably a gift, but why only half an egg... Did they make a mistake!? The relatively rich chicken white broth had a moderate thickness, and you could taste the umami of the chicken, but I felt the seasoning was a bit weak. How much lemon juice you want to soak in the soup is a matter of preference, but I just let a few slices sink into the soup and ate it naturally (◞ꈍ∇ꈍ)◞⋆** I think if the lemon flavor is too strong, it might dilute the deliciousness of the chicken. The noodles were thin straight noodles served hot, but the soup was not as hot as the noodles, which was a bit disappointing (´・ω・`) The lemon has an impact and looks great in photos, but personally, I felt it could do without. Thank you for the meal.

"Mura-ji Ramen," which opened on April 6th, is where I headed after work. When I arrived at the restaurant after 8 pm, I found out that they had already stopped taking orders due to being sold out. The place was bustling with foreign tourists, and I decided to order the "Lemon Ramen" (1,100 yen) that I had planned to try. I also requested the "flavored egg" as a service mentioned on social media. The bowl that was brought to me on a tray was filled with sliced lemons, bamboo shoots, flavored egg, and chicken chashu hidden underneath. The thick and rich chicken broth soup had a perfect balance of saltiness and a mellow chicken flavor, enhanced by the aroma and slight acidity of the lemon. The noodles were thin and firm, allowing the soup to cling well to them. The flavored egg had a creamy yolk, the bamboo shoots provided a nice crunch, and the chicken chashu was tender and paired well with the lemon flavor and acidity. In the past, I made a mistake by squeezing the lemon too much, resulting in an overpowering sour and bitter taste. This time, I lightly soaked the lemon in the soup, and it created a perfect balance with the rich soup, making it delicious.

Today, I went to a ramen restaurant located down Yatsumabashi Rokkaku Street. Mura-ji is a popular ramen shop with the concept of "wanting women to enjoy ramen easily." Originally located near Gion's Tsukihashi Bridge, it moved to the current location in Yatsumabashi Rokkaku on April 6, 2023. The interior of the restaurant is renovated like a Kyoto machiya, with remnants of machiya on the walls and pillars. There is a small garden at the back of the restaurant, adding a charming Kyoto atmosphere. There are also private rooms called "hanare" at the back of the garden. The overall impression is that there are plenty of seats available. I sat at a table and opened the menu. The menu mainly consists of a rich chicken white broth ramen made with whole chicken. A unique feature is that they recommend Kyoto local sake to go with the ramen. This time, I ordered the "Lemon Ramen," which is said to be very popular on social media. After a while, the ramen was served. The Lemon Ramen is a unique style of ramen with slices of lemon covering the surface of the bowl. This Lemon Ramen seems to be an original serving style created by Mura-ji. You are supposed to enjoy the soup by dipping the lemon in it rather than eating it directly. I took a sip of the soup first. It was a creamy and flavorful chicken white broth! Then, I tried squeezing the lemon with a spoon and tasting it. The refreshing lemon flavor surprisingly complemented the soup very well, and I was pleasantly surprised. Next, I tried the noodles. They were thin noodles with a firm texture due to the low water content. When dipped in the soup, they absorbed the flavor well. There were also chicken chashu slices under the lemon slices. The chicken was light in flavor and paired well with the soup when soaked in it. Despite the unique appearance of being covered in lemon slices, the ramen had a solid and enjoyable taste, allowing me to savor the richness of the chicken white broth soup.
