I came to Kyoto for a trip and decided to have lunch at Funayama Kiyomizu. The portion size is a bit smaller, but each dish is so delicious that I still want to eat more. The sea bream shirako, in particular, was very tasty. I would like to come back for dinner next time.

Located next to Kenkun Shrine, a 30-minute bus ride from Sanjo Kawaramachi, in a residential area. After working at several famous traditional Japanese restaurants, the owner opened his own place in 2018. Originally from Omaezaki, Shizuoka, he tends to be a bit lacking in customer service skills. Tonight, I was the only customer. The food is excellent, with dishes served hot on hot plates and cold dishes served cold. However, there is almost no entertainment factor, as the owner's conversations are limited to his own interests. The sake selection includes Ryusei Junmai Ginjo and Yamahoshi Junmai Bakurai.

Located near Funaokeyama, close to Daikakuji, this Japanese restaurant in a residential area embodies the essence of Kyoto. With a humble yet clean and cozy atmosphere, it has been awarded one Michelin star. The seating is only at the counter. I apologize for not taking notes of the dishes, so please forgive any discrepancies in my descriptions compared to the owner's. We enjoyed dishes such as:
- Harusumi sauce
- White miso o-zoni
- Fugu ponzu
- Tuna with grated daikon
- Assorted appetizers with raw octopus, salmon roe, turnip, pounded burdock, kumquat, kelp, and sweet shrimp
- Managatsuo fish with watercress
- Steamed white fish with turnip
- Meal with rice, miso soup, beef and leek stir-fry, and pickles
- Sesame tofu with black beans, strawberry sherbet, and mandarin orange
We savored each dish meticulously prepared by the chef, enhancing the flavors. The white miso o-zoni was outstanding with grilled mochi, and the presentation of each dish in beautiful tableware added to the dining experience. Overall, we had a delightful meal and would love to visit again. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Located on the east side of Kenkon Shrine in the quiet residential area of Funaokayama, Kyoto, "Funaokayama Shimizu" is a counter kaiseki restaurant that stands quietly hidden. With very little information available beforehand, I heard that the chef had previously worked at "Wakuden" and other establishments before opening this new restaurant. I made a reservation and visited in early May. The restaurant only has a counter with 7 seats, and the chef runs the place alone. The atmosphere was lacking in hospitality, and the chef's reserved demeanor made it difficult to connect with him. The meal started with a bottle of beer and then sake pairings, followed by an 8-course meal priced at 7000 yen. While the dishes were delicately prepared and showcased the quality of the ingredients, the lack of warmth in the service left a slightly disappointing impression. Despite the reserved atmosphere, the cooking was skillful and showcased the chef's expertise. The meal concluded with a water dessert, and although the experience lacked a personal touch, the quality of the food was undeniable. Overall, the restaurant offers a taste of Kyoto's high-quality cuisine, making it a good choice for those seeking a quiet dining experience without expecting too much interaction.
