Kyoto, Shijo-Karasuma [Sushi restaurant Susabiyu] I felt like I could eat a little bit and have a drink before heading home, so I decided to stop by. The restaurant is renovated from a large old folk house, giving it a unique atmosphere. I was guided to the second floor, where the narrow hallway felt like a maze, adding to the excitement of the place. There is even a courtyard inside the house. Here is a quick rundown of what I ordered: - Santory Kaoru Ale draft beer for ¥583 - Assorted appetizers for ¥968 per person, including salmon roe, pickles, plum crystal, sweet boiled ayu fish, green soybean, potato salad, pickled tomatoes, egg custard, and firefly squid with vinegar miso - Assorted tempura of 5 kinds for ¥990, including shrimp, chicken (2 pieces), pumpkin, and onion - Wagyu beef tendon yukhoe for ¥1,848 - Crab shell sushi (limited quantity) for ¥968 each, with crab, salmon roe, and sea urchin - Tuna, shrimp, wagyu beef, scallop, eel sushi for various prices - Hakushu highball for ¥880 After spending a fun day in Kyoto with friends, enjoying delicious food and drinks, I was satisfied and glad to be able to take a seat on the train ride home. Location: 329 Kamoyanagicho, Bukkojicho-dori Karasuma Higashi iru, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Phone: 075-353-2088 / 050-5600-4027 Hours: Mon-Fri 17:00-23:00 (Last order 22:00), Sat-Sun & holidays 12:00-23:00 (Last order 22:00) Closed: None

"Sushi restaurant Susabi-yu Shijo ⏰ Mon-Fri 17:00-23:00 (Last order 22:00) Sat/Sun/Holidays 12:00-23:00 (Last order 22:00) @susabiyu_kyoto First visit. The shop has a traditional Japanese house feel. The assorted appetizers were visually appealing and delicious - you need to order at least 2 servings. Various dishes to enjoy with drinks. The Wagyu Temari and Tongue sushi were tender and the rice was perfect. The shrimp sushi had large pieces. The sea urchin was sweet and delicious. I was curious about this restaurant since it opened. The counter seats on the first floor are glass-covered, and walking through a maze-like corridor leads to a spacious interior with a small garden, tatami seating, and table seats on the second floor. The appetizers, sushi, grilled fish, meat sushi, and tempura were all delicious. It would be even better if there were a few more sushi options. Inbound tourists would surely be delighted.

The traditional old house-style storefront of this restaurant is so eye-catching that people walking down the street stop to admire it. I went inside and ordered my first drink, but the first drinks and appetizers for customers who arrived later were served before mine. Maybe the service was slow because it was all-you-can-drink? The restaurant was packed during the Gion Festival and it seemed like they were short-staffed, but the alcohol service was disappointingly slow. The sushi was good with red vinegar, and the drinks were reasonably priced and tasty, but the wait for the alcohol was a letdown.

The restaurant is visible from the road, but has a nice atmosphere. The sushi is delicious. However, the tempura is just okay, as the broth is weak. The performance of pouring the first broth into a bowl and having a picture float on top is impressive and popular with women. As mentioned in reviews, there are few experienced staff members, who seem stiff and lacking smiles. The service is slow, making it difficult to enjoy the meal smoothly. Keep trying your best.

The ultimate everyday dining experience! Sushi restaurant Susabi in Kyoto Karasuma is currently undergoing renovation in a renovated old folk house with a view of the courtyard and private rooms. The atmosphere of the Kyoto town is very lovely. It's a sushi restaurant, but the menu is diverse, offering not only seafood but also meat and various side dishes. On this day, we had: - Assorted appetizers: a colorful assortment of seasonal delicacies, including firefly squid - Kani-koura sushi: a luxurious sushi topped with salmon roe, sea urchin, crab meat, yukke, and crab shell - Wagyu misuji yukke: a rare cut of wagyu misuji with a sweet and savory sauce and creamy egg yolk - Tempura assortment: five kinds of tempura - Sushi assortment: tuna, shrimp, wagyu eel, scallop, and wagyu temari sushi. The creative sushi with fish and meat was delicious. The variety of drinks is abundant, with unique chu-hai and cocktails typical of Kyoto. The Uji matcha highball was rich and fragrant, while the Yama no Kami amazake cocktail was a refreshing and fruity blend of amazake and mango. I also recommend trying a flight of three types of sake. With counter seats overlooking the courtyard and completely private rooms, this restaurant is perfect for both everyday dining and special occasions!

I made a reservation at 18:00 and visited the restaurant. I found out about it from Instagram where they were doing a reception. The counter on the first floor is glass, so be careful if you are shy because people can see you from outside. There is also a second floor, so it's quite spacious. The staff all seem young. I couldn't find a recommended dry sake, so I started with beer. The menu is a bit confusing as some items are duplicated. I ordered "Chicken Liver Sashimi," "Chiran Chicken Tataki," "Chef's Choice Sushi (Fish)," and "Chef's Choice Sushi (Meat)." In conclusion, the food was decent but the service was lacking. They served the dishes without much explanation. They could have at least said, "It's seasoned, so enjoy it as it is." Also, although it's omakase, the sushi fish was pretty standard. But I guess that's to be expected here. The sauce was also provided, but again, no explanation. The meat sushi was tasty. They only explained the parts. The open entrance area was quite distracting, with cigarette smoke coming in from outside. People kept walking in, which was a bit unsettling. I'm not sure about the likelihood of coming back. If you accept it as it is, it's not too expensive and the food is good, so it might be okay. However, it's a bit disappointing that the restaurant looks more like a fancy sushi place than a casual sushi izakaya. Recommended for those who want to enjoy sushi in a stylish and casual setting!

The sushi rice was firm. There were many creative sushi dishes that combined Japanese beef and fish. Among the various toppings, the simmered conger eel was delicious. The speed at which each course was served was too fast, making it tiring. I wish they had considered the pace at which we were eating before bringing out the dishes. The Uji tea's gyokuro had sediment at the bottom, giving it a murky appearance similar to matcha, which was unexpected. It tasted like powdered green tea.

The first-floor counter surrounds the open kitchen in a continuous line, offering a nice atmosphere that is visible from the outside. There are private rooms at the back and on the second floor, making it convenient to use. Sushi and tempura are available at reasonable prices and can be ordered as individual items. Thank you for the meal. #FullBelly

The sushi izakaya in Shijo, Kyoto, was not very diverse in terms of sushi options. The service was a bit slow, so ordering early was necessary. The drinks were priced on the higher side. The dishes were visually appealing with beautiful presentation, but the taste was average.

A popular sushi and sake bar from Osaka opened its first branch in Kyoto. The renovated traditional house exterior is so charming that people passing by can't help but stop in their tracks. The concept of the restaurant is more about luxury than casual dining, aiming to provide the ultimate everyday dining experience. The two-story interior features a spacious and open counter seating area on the first floor, with private rooms that overlook a courtyard, while the second floor offers relaxing tatami seating. I wanted to sit at the counter, but it was full, so I was guided to the second-floor seating area. The restaurant is always packed, so it may be difficult to secure a counter seat without a reservation. Orders are placed through a QR code. - Appetizers: The sesame tofu was deliciously soft and the fish broth was gentle and warming. - Assorted Appetizers: A beautifully presented assortment of seasonal dishes, with the tomato dashi pickles being particularly refreshing and tasty. - Wagyu Beef Tartare: The melt-in-your-mouth wagyu beef tartare with a sweet and savory sauce is a must-try. - Sushi: From tuna and shrimp to wagyu beef and eel, the variety of sushi options is impressive. The wagyu beef eel sushi is especially recommended for its creative and delicious combination. - Crab Shell Sushi: A visually stunning dish with ikura, sea urchin, crab meat, wagyu beef tartare, and sushi rice served in a crab shell. A definite must-order if available. - Tempura Assortment: A crispy and delicious assortment of tempura. - Tender Beef Tongue with Dashi Sauce: A sinful dish with tender beef tongue served with a hot dashi sauce. - Blowfish Milt with Dashi Sauce: A hot and incredibly delicious dish with creamy blowfish milt wrapped in wagyu beef. The restaurant, known for its sushi, also offers a wide selection of meat dishes. With a great atmosphere and excellent service, it's a versatile restaurant suitable for various occasions. Overall, it was a delightful dining experience.

Located near Kyoto Subway Shijo Station and Hankyu Karasuma Station, this sushi restaurant opened in April. The first floor has counter seats, while the second floor has tatami seats with a Kyoto-style atmosphere. In addition to delicious fish, they also serve tasty meat dishes. The menu includes sesame tofu and fish broth appetizers, assorted appetizers, wagyu beef tartare, tempura assortment, wagyu beef sushi, crab shell sushi, tuna, shrimp, Toro trio, wagyu beef tongue with broth, and shirako with meat broth. The flavors are excellent overall, and there are also limited-time menu items available. The counter on the first floor is great for dates or girls' night out, while the tatami seats on the second floor are perfect for drinks with friends. If you're having trouble choosing a restaurant in Kyoto, be sure to give this place a try! ✌️

I visited the sushi restaurant OPEN Sushidokoro Susabi-yu in Kyoto during my trip. I made a reservation online due to Golden Week, and the restaurant is conveniently located just a 2-minute walk from Shijo Station. I ordered: Wagyu beef tartare, Crab shell sushi, Assorted mixed bath, Wagyu scallop sushi, Tender beef tongue with broth, Cherry snapper sushi, Assorted mountain vegetable tempura, Strawberry daifuku, Black sesame ice cream. The Wagyu beef tartare was amazing, especially when mixed with egg yolk and sweet and savory sauce. The meat sushi options were varied, and I ended up choosing scallop, which was a delightful combination with Wagyu. It was a unique experience to enjoy both meat and seafood together. The beef tongue with broth was delicious, with the hot broth complementing the tender tongue. The tempura was crispy and delightful. The assorted mixed bath was a mix of meat and fish, which was a fun and exciting combination. The restaurant offered a luxurious experience with both sashimi and meat options. Overall, I had a satisfying meal with various dishes and desserts, spending around 6000 yen per person.

Today's dinner was at "Sushidokoro Susabiyu," which recently opened in Shijo Karasuma. I tried their original "Susabi Sushi Course" that was crowdfunded, which includes all-you-can-eat sushi and all-you-can-drink for an early discounted price of 5,500 yen. The taste was absolutely delicious, but due to the restaurant being newly opened, the staff seemed to have trouble understanding the menu. There were mistakes in our orders, and it took 30 minutes for the first dish of the wrong course to arrive. Even after that, the service was slow, and we were unsure if our orders were being processed, leading us to re-order the same items which then all came out at once at the end. The dessert was also missing. Because of these issues with the service, I have rated the experience lower. However, I am satisfied with the taste and plan to give it another try once the staff has had more practice.

A new sushi izakaya near Shijo-Karasuma. Bright interior and stylish music. Recommended dishes include Kani Koura Sushi for 968 yen (yukke, crab meat, sea urchin, salmon roe), a 5-piece assorted sushi set for 1298 yen, and a tuna trio set for 1210 yen. The sushi is decent but somewhat pricey. There are many visually appealing menu items. Personally, I would prefer either lower prices or a higher quality sushi experience. With the increasing number of foreign tourists, this place seems good for sushi beginners.

"Enjoy it as if you are coming to play!" is the concept of the popular sushi and sake bar, Susabi-yu, which has made its first appearance in Kyoto. This restaurant offers a variety of meat, sushi, tempura, and other specialty dishes. It has a slightly more upscale atmosphere compared to the Umeda and Sannomiya locations. Some recommended dishes include the Crab Yukke Shell Sushi (968 yen), the Susabi Roll (968 yen), and the Namero (550 yen) served with Myoga and shiso leaves. They also provide complimentary "bonito broth" to enhance the flavor of the dishes.

I had sashimi, tempura, sushi, and a few other dishes. The ingredients were delicious. The location is convenient and the prices are reasonable for this area. I would like to invite my friends to come again. However, it was a bit disappointing that the staff seemed rushed, as if they were waiting for our plates to be empty. It's a nice place, so it wouldn't hurt for the staff to improve their customer service skills a bit!

I went on a business trip in July 2023 with a client. It cost around 13,000 yen per person for a 3-hour meal, which is a bit pricey. The course was 5,500 yen, and the rest was mostly for drinks. The restaurant was renovated from an old traditional house, which added a charming atmosphere. The plates were beautiful and made the experience even more enjoyable. The course included 10 pieces of sushi, beef and egg tempura (shrimp, eggplant), appetizers, red miso soup, and sesame ice cream. The taste was decent overall, with the beef and egg tempura being a standout. For drinks, we started with beer, then tried 3 types of sake - junmai, ginjo, and junmai ginjo, totaling 9 different kinds. Finally, we ended the meal with a Hakushu highball. It's a bit expensive for me to go on my own, but I would definitely go back if given the chance.
