Eating out every day to conquer the top 100 curry restaurants. Today, I visited Murugi, a curry restaurant in Shibuya. This restaurant was selected as one of the top 100 curry restaurants in 2022. It was also chosen in 2019 and 2020. Established in 1951, it is a long-established store that serves curry with a Japanese twist based on what the founder learned overseas. They make the curry sauce from scratch using only domestic ingredients except for spices. The restaurant is only open from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm, and it often has a long line, making it difficult to get a seat. I arrived at the restaurant around 11:20 am on a weekday, and there were already 7 to 8 people in line. If you line up at the end, you can enter the restaurant with the first group, so I decided to wait in line. I ordered the Egg Murugi Curry for 1,200 yen. You can choose the level of spiciness for an additional fee, from mild, medium, to spicy, but this time I chose medium. The curry that was served had a unique appearance. The rice was piled up like a mountain, with eggs neatly arranged on top of the curry, and a line of ketchup drawn. Just by looking at the photo, you can tell it's Murugi's curry. The sauce was medium in spiciness, with a hint of heat. It had a depth and richness that would appeal to Japanese taste buds. It's a blend of Japanese and Indian flavors, with 80% Japanese style and 20% Indian style. It's a delicious curry that's worth waiting in line for. I'd like to try the spicy version next time.

I went to Shibuya to pick up a CD that I had reserved for the weekend. I suddenly remembered how I used to come to Shibuya's live houses and record shops almost every week when I was a student. For lunch, I went to this curry shop located at the entrance of the Hyakken store. I arrived much earlier than the opening time, and there was only one person waiting. But as it got closer to opening time, a line started to form. I'm glad I came early. The nearby Chinese noodle shop, Kiraku, already had a long line. The staff came to take our order before opening, so we were able to enter smoothly and get our food quickly. I ordered the egg-filled Murgh curry with cheese and extra spiciness as toppings, while my family ordered the egg-filled curry with regular spiciness. The default curry was already relatively spicy, so it was interesting that sweet spiciness was an additional charge. The curry was served with rice shaped like a mountain, fragrant sauce, and sliced egg. The boiled egg went really well with the spicy flavor. When I posted about it on another social media platform, I received replies from some people reminiscing about their visits 30 years ago and sharing memories from their younger days. The historic taste that brings back memories, it was really delicious. I hope this place continues to thrive for many more years. A legendary restaurant in Shibuya.

Once you try this curry, you'll get addicted to its spiciness, which is about as spicy as homemade curry. Despite the huge portion of rice, I was surprised to find that it actually matched well. After finishing the meal, I felt really full. Even though it's located on Dojima-zaka, the fact that the restaurant is packed even during lunchtime shows its true worth.

I revisited the restaurant because I was curious about my previous review. The impression was good. Even before the end of the lunch service, the restaurant was almost full, and there was a quiet excitement in the air, creating a cozy atmosphere that made me feel uplifted. The staff were also very friendly, and I had a pleasant time. The slightly dry, curved rice enhanced the depth of the flavorful curry, making me more sensitive to its taste. After finishing my meal, I drank a yogurt drink and lingered in the restaurant, as if enjoying the view from the mountaintop after reaching the summit. Then, just like descending a mountain, I walked down Dogenzaka and headed back home from the sea of people. I definitely plan to visit again.

I visited with a friend! Located about a 7-minute walk from Shibuya Station, we arrived a little after 12 pm on a weekday, so we were prepared for it to be full, but we were able to get in smoothly! Mondays might be a good time to visit. The retro interior gives off an atmosphere that they serve really delicious curry! I ordered the Egg Curry - a towering plate of rice topped with authentic chicken curry and sliced boiled eggs. The curry was spicy and had a pleasant heat to it, it was really delicious! Since my workplace is nearby, I would like to visit for lunch again! Thank you for the meal!!

This time, the restaurant is Murugi located in Kamiyama. It is a legendary curry shop that was established in 1951. It has been selected as one of the top 100 curry shops on Tabelog three times. The location is about a 4.5-minute walk from Shibuya Station A0 exit. When you enter the north side of the Dogenzaka intersection, you will find the restaurant towards the Hyakken Shopping Street. The exterior exudes a historical atmosphere. It's around 12 o'clock. The interior of the restaurant has a nostalgic cafe-like atmosphere with only table seating. I ordered the Egg Murugi, which is a signature dish at Murugi. The dish was served incredibly quickly, in about 1 minute. The size of the portion and the speed of service suggest that they have a great turnover rate. Now, let's dig in.
Review:
- Egg Murugi ¥1200
I tasted the curry sauce first, and wow! It's rich and delicious! I thought it might have a Western-style flavor, but it actually has a dry curry taste with a strong spice profile. It's a chicken curry with a balance of animal-based umami, spice aroma, and a rich oiliness that gives it a bitter but well-balanced flavor. It's also very hot. The rice portion is quite generous, and you can easily get full from it. The boiled egg adds a nice texture and serves as a good accent to the dish. The balance of rice, sauce, and boiled egg is excellent when eaten together. The boiled egg doesn't dissolve into the sauce, which is a plus. The well-balanced sauce is not overly creamy, which is great. You can ask for homemade chutney to mellow out the spiciness. The spiciness was a bit hotter than expected, but the amount of water I drank didn't necessarily correspond to the level of spiciness, so it might be easy to handle. I was sweating, but it wasn't overwhelming. In conclusion, I have always wanted to visit Murugi, and I was impressed by the well-balanced flavors of their curry. While it may have a single flavor profile, the quality is more than satisfying with the Fukujinzuke and boiled egg. I didn't know I could ask for chutney until after finishing my meal, so I would like to try that next time. I'm also curious about their Hayashi curry. I will definitely come back. Thank you for the delicious meal.

I entered the restaurant on Sunday before 12 o'clock. The place was about 80% full and no one was waiting in line while I was eating. I ordered the Egg Murgh for ¥1,200. The curry sauce was thick and had a slight bitterness at the first bite, then the spiciness gradually spread. It lacked sweetness and the flavor was not very rich. The rice was on the harder side, which could be a matter of personal preference. Overall, the curry wasn't bad but it also wasn't to my taste, which explains why there was no line. Thank you for the meal.

On Wednesday, I arrived at "Murgi" in Shibuya, about a 10-minute walk from Shibuya Station towards Dogenzaka, right in the middle of lunchtime at 12:17 pm. The restaurant was surprisingly empty when I entered, with about 10 customers already seated in the spacious dining area. The interior had a nostalgic Showa era feel, with wooden-framed tables for 4 people, a few larger tables, and a cozy atmosphere overall. I ordered the signature dish, Egg-in Murgi Curry, with a spicy level of 50, and decided to try the recommended "Mikkeller Burst IPA" beer. The curry was flavorful and perfectly spicy, while the IPA had a fruity and refreshing taste with a hint of grapefruit bitterness in the aftertaste. The beer was served in a small wine glass-like glass, and it complemented the curry well. The dish arrived promptly, with the rice shaped into a mountain and topped with boiled eggs and a rich curry sauce. The combination of the perfectly cooked chicken, flavorful curry, and slightly firm rice was delicious. The pickled daikon and red ginger on the side added a nice touch to the meal. Overall, I was satisfied with the tasty curry and the relaxing ambiance of the restaurant. It was a delightful dining experience.

I wanted to eat curry in Shibuya, so I looked it up and went to this restaurant. I had an idea of the location, but it was really right in the middle of a love hotel district, which made the walk there a bit awkward. I visited on a Wednesday at 11:30, and the restaurant was almost full. By 11:50, there were already a few people waiting outside. However, since the menu is mainly focused on curry, the turnover rate seemed to be high. When the curry arrived, I got excited seeing the unique mountain of rice. The curry had a color that was a mix of brown, green, and black. Although you couldn't tell what was in it just by looking, the Chicken Curry actually had small pieces of chicken in it. The sauce seemed to have a lot of vegetables and fruits, giving it a flavor closer to Japanese curry than Indian curry. It felt like an extreme version of Japanese curry, and with each bite, you could tell that a lot of time was put into making the sauce. As a spice lover, I would have preferred it to be more flavorful, but this taste would probably be loved by my father's generation, in their 60s. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal!

During lunchtime, the restaurant was full so I had to wait for about 10 minutes before getting a table. It was clear that the place is popular as customers kept coming in one after another. The menu is simple and easy to understand, offering dishes like Murgh Curry, Hayashi Curry, salads, and various toppings. ⭐️Murgh Curry: It's quite spicy, but not the kind that makes you gasp for air. Even for someone like me who isn't a fan of spicy food, it was manageable. The level of spiciness was just right for me. ⭐️Hayashi Curry: This curry is on the sweeter side, based on the Murgh Curry but with a hint of sweetness. Despite being spicy, it also has a noticeable sweetness, creating a unique flavor. It's slightly less spicy compared to the Murgh Curry.

They have been in business for 72 years. Amazing. I wonder if the owner runs it themselves. The opening hours are short, so they must have a good work-life balance and be very successful. The taste is not bad, but it's bitter. With 72 years of experience, they should have time to come up with more creative ideas.

Around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, I visited a brick-built restaurant that exudes a retro atmosphere both on the outside and inside, making me feel like I had slipped back in time to the Showa era. I ordered the Egg Murgh Curry (¥1,200), which was served with a mountain-shaped mound of rice and a dark, beautifully arranged egg on top. The curry, with its rich flavor and unique blend of vegetables and fruits, perfectly complemented the rice. It was a curry that truly made me feel the restaurant's 70-year history. Thank you for the delicious meal. On a side note, even during my meal, customers kept coming in one after another, reaffirming the restaurant's enduring popularity.

I arrived at around 11:40 and the restaurant was full, but I only had to wait about 10 minutes to get a table. The curry was spicy and delicious, but if you don't like spicy food, you might want to try adding cheese topping. They also had a mild option available. I was able to place my order while waiting in line, and the curry arrived in about 10 minutes. It came with two types of Fukujinzuke, which was great for changing the flavor. I will definitely go back again.

The visually striking Murgh curry, with rice piled up like a mountain, is quite an impressive sight. When heading from Shibuya Station towards Navi Street, you pass through quite an atmospheric area, which can be a bit intimidating... maybe taking a slightly longer route is not a bad idea. Arriving 5 minutes before opening, there were already about 6 people waiting in line. At exactly 11:30, we were seated at a table towards the back and placed our orders. The Egg Murgh Curry for ¥1200 was just what I was looking for. The interior, with its predominantly dark brown color scheme, had a nice vibe. After a few minutes of waiting, it arrived - the Murgh curry! The taste was truly unique. The meat was so tender and almost liquid-like, with a distinct presence of garlic and ginger. It was a strange sensation at first, but the deliciousness grew on me. Eating it with the boiled egg accentuated the egg flavor more than I expected. The spiciness became milder, making it a good choice for those who don't like spicy food. I usually love eggs, but for the Murgh curry, I think I'd like to try it without eggs next time. The portion of rice was quite generous. Personally, I wish there was more curry sauce! The staff member at the payment counter was very friendly. Despite being so famous, their humble attitude felt genuine, and I instantly became a fan.

I visited this place for the first time in about 3 years, and it felt like a long time. The entrance with a retro sign saying "Established in Showa 26" doesn't feel like Shibuya at all. Inside, the atmosphere is also retro. I ordered the most popular egg-filled Murgh curry. The signature of this place is the mountain-like mound of rice. At first glance, it doesn't seem like a lot, but there is actually quite a bit. The slightly firm rice is easy to mix with the smooth curry, the cute arrangement of eggs, red and yellow fukujinzuke, and red pickled ginger. The curve of the spoon is just right for this curry. It was a delicious meal.

This might be my favorite curry that I've ever had. The opening hours are short so I couldn't go often, but I want to go back for this taste. The way they serve the rice is interesting and funny. It looked spicy but the spiciness was actually delicious and not overwhelming.

The first visit was very satisfying. I went with my children, and the staff were very kind and considerate. The food was delicious with just the right amount of spice. The rice was served beautifully like Mount Fuji, and the chicken curry had a strong impact. I definitely want to visit this restaurant again. The taste was great, but most importantly, the staff were really nice. This kind of atmosphere is important, and I truly appreciate the experience.

I came to Shibuya by bicycle and it was quite sweaty. The weather is really hot outside. At times like this, curry is the best, right? So I searched for curry in Shibuya and found that Murugi-san's shop looks really delicious. I arrived near the shop about 30 minutes before it opened, so I wandered around, drank coffee, and leisurely passed the time. When I returned about 15 minutes before the opening, there was already one customer waiting. By the time the shop opened, there were about 8 people in line. Now, for my order, I chose the spicy Murugi curry with egg (with less rice). I was torn between choosing extra spicy, but lately, I've been holding back a bit because sometimes when it's too spicy, I can't fully appreciate the original deliciousness. I love spicy food, but I decided to go with medium spicy this time. The medium spicy was just right, with a good level of spiciness and flavor. After sweating under the scorching sun, the curry tasted amazing!! The rich and variously blended curry sauce was delicious. I posted a close-up photo of the sauce, which shows the various spices and flavors blended in. The deep flavor of the curry was so delicious. The rice was cooked firm, which I like. This texture is great, right? The boiled egg goes so well with the curry. Almost all the customers in the shop also ordered the egg Murugi curry. I don't understand why you wouldn't add the egg. Boiled egg and curry are the best combination. Ah, it was delicious. I want to eat it again. It was really delicious curry. Thank you for the meal.

Indian cuisine "MURUGI" at Shibuya Hyakken-ten is one of the historic restaurants, founded in 1951, with a retro coffee shop-like interior. The menu is simple, making it easy to choose without much hesitation. The Egg Murugi Curry for 1,200 yen arrived in about 8 minutes. It is a signature dish with a unique presentation of rice shaped like a pointed mountain. Although it is said to be a long-established Indian curry specialty store, the Chicken Curry Rice seems to have a Japanese twist. The gravy has a good balance of bitterness, richness, and moderate spiciness, with small cuts of chicken that are simple yet delicious. It is interesting to eat while refreshing your palate with boiled eggs and pickles, and the free homemade chutney is sweet and goes well with this curry. The limited business days and hours were a personal hurdle, but finally being able to visit was a delight. (3.78)
