Today, I visited a curry restaurant in Miyagawa-cho, Gion, Kyoto that is scheduled to open soon.
Spice Curry koisus is set to open in August 2023, with a pre-opening starting on August 1st. It seems to be a new branch by the company behind Gion Duck Noodles. The official opening date is planned for mid to late August, but for now, they are conducting staff training during the pre-opening phase.
The restaurant has a few counter seats, and the interior is decorated with sushi barrels. The unique feature of koisus is eating curry in sushi barrels. The name koisus is derived from flipping the characters of "susiok," which means sushi barrel.
The menu is simple, offering "Spice Curry" and "Tempura." The curry is priced at 1,150 yen, and comes with a tempura assortment for 1,500 yen.
When the dishes arrived, I was impressed by the volume of the food served in the large sushi barrel. The staff kindly explained the dishes:
- Spice Curry: The colorful curry, made with over 20 spices, is divided into two sections on a bed of rice. There are five types of pickles on top of the rice. After enjoying the curry, you can add Kyoto-style dashi broth to turn it into a soup curry.
- Tempura Assortment: The assortment includes shrimp tempura, chicken tempura, and seasonal vegetable tempura (shishito pepper, pumpkin, eggplant). They are served with matcha salt for dipping.
The curry was flavorful and not too spicy, with a mild and delicious taste. The pickles added a crunchy texture and complemented the curry well. The black curry had a rich flavor with various types of beans. The tempura was crispy, with a satisfying texture and a refreshing touch of matcha salt.
To finish the meal, I poured the dashi broth over the remaining rice and curry, creating a unique soup curry. Despite the initial concern about the portion size, the soup curry made it easy to finish the meal.
Overall, dining on curry in a sushi barrel was a novel and enjoyable experience.
