・Beef cutlet 260g with 3 side dishes set (with grated yam) for 2,500 yen
・Draft beer (large) for 800 yen
Located in a complex building that was built on the former site of "LAOX ASOBOT," this restaurant opened on April 21, 2018. It seems to be popular among foreign tourists, as there was a long line on the stairs and we had to wait for 15 minutes before entering. While we were waiting, a staff member came to take our order and asked, "Would you like grated yam?" I answered yes, but it made me wonder if some foreigners do not prefer sticky foods like grated yam or natto. In the past, sticky foods like natto were often used in food education to teach patience, but this incident made me realize the differences in culture.
The beef cutlet comes in two sizes, 130g and 260g, and you can choose 1 to 3 out of 4 options: "tamagoyaki" (rolled omelette), "Nanban miso pickles," "additive-free mentaiko" (spicy cod roe), and "warabi mochi" (bracken rice cake). Of course, you can also order without side dishes. I ordered the above set.
I started with a large draft beer, specifically Suntory "Premium Malt," and waited for the dish to be prepared. In the meantime, a staff member ignited the charcoal on a stone plate. The timing of serving was perfect. The meal was luxurious and splendid, consisting of white rice, red miso soup, pickles, two beef cutlets, potato salad, cabbage, parsley, mountain wasabi, and three carefully selected side dishes with wasabi soy sauce and mountain wasabi sauce on a tray. The thin crispy coating of the beef cutlet was seared on the stone plate on the table. It was not cooked slowly like yakiniku (grilled meat), but rather quickly. I enjoyed it with wasabi soy sauce, mountain wasabi sauce, and rock salt on the table, following the recommended order.
You can have one free refill of rice, so I decided to have grated yam first and mentaiko for the second refill. The umami flavor of the beef disappeared instantly. It was delicious. But there was no time to indulge in sentiment. The charcoal was almost out. I needed to cook quickly. I grilled four pieces at once. I had to eat them while they were still warm, or they would cool down. And the fire went out. I asked for a refill and a replacement for the charcoal. Alright, let's start the second round. I put mentaiko on the rice and continued to grill the remaining cutlets on the stone plate. It was delicious. It wasn't tonkatsu, but beef cutlet was also good. This was my debut victory at Motomura.
