New Delicacies @ Ikebukuro
Due to the weather concerns from last time, I was worried about the weather, but it turned out to be a sunny day all day long, almost too hot. I got off at Ikebukuro Station and first looked for the first shop. The location was right next to Ikebukuro Station, so I found it easily. This is the Chinese long-established restaurant "New Delicacies". It was around 11:40, but the restaurant was already full when I entered. The staff asked me to wait for a while, so I waited outside. The first floor had only a few counter seats, which were already full. After a while, another staff member came out and guided us to the second floor of the restaurant. Now, the main purpose of this visit is the signboard ramen. The "Taro Ramen" that they have been particular about for over 60 years. I actually just learned about it recently, so I was curious about what kind of ramen it was. First, we went up the stairs to the second floor. There were already two customers sitting at a table there. We were guided to a table by the window. Self-service water was served, and we quickly placed our order, but later I regretted it a bit. The reason was that I found "Half Taro Ramen and Half Chahan" on the menu. The Taro Ramen was 990 yen, so the price was almost the same as that. Maybe it would have been better to be able to eat two different kinds, but it was too late. There were other menus placed on the table as well. Looking at them, there were quite a few alcoholic drinks and appetizers. Oh, I thought maybe I should have ordered a beer. I regretted it again. As we waited, more and more customers came in, and there were about four pairs of customers. Interestingly, all the customers were in pairs. I think single customers are seated on the first floor, and groups of two or more are seated on the second floor. The orders from customers were varied, and about half of them ordered beer. After a while, our Taro Ramen arrived. Oh, this is a unique appearance. The whole ramen was covered in a thick sauce. The first thing that surprised me was that the sauce was incredibly hard. When I put my chopsticks into the bowl, it was heavy and didn't move. This viscosity was the strongest I had ever encountered in ramen. If I had used wooden chopsticks, they would have definitely broken. Fortunately, this restaurant uses plastic chopsticks, so they didn't break. The noodles under the sauce were flat, transparent, medium-thick noodles. These noodles had a firm texture. As for the toppings, the main one was Chinese cabbage, with carrots, wood ear mushrooms, and other ingredients. The seasoning was sour and spicy, similar to sour and spicy soup noodles. However, the viscosity of this sauce was unbelievably strong. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the characteristics of this sauce were written on the signboard outside the restaurant. Anyway, the chewy noodles and the thick sauce made it take time to eat. This ramen is unprecedented and unique, not often seen in other restaurants. I thought this is a ramen that ramen lovers would want to try at least once. However, I managed to finish it and drank up the water. The restaurant was air-conditioned, but I started sweating. This ramen is definitely spicy. I went down the stairs and paid at the register at the entrance. I handed over a thousand yen bill and received ten yen in change. Well then, thank you for the meal.
