Ueno Seiyoken, a pioneer of Western cuisine in Japan, is a large building that resembles a traditional inn located in Ueno Park. I had always overlooked it, but I felt that I must try the traditional flavors at least once before visiting the Matisse exhibition. As I headed towards the right, I found Fukushima Western-style restaurant, a French cuisine grill. There were about 10 people waiting at the entrance, but we were seated after a short 5-minute wait.
Luckily, we were guided to a window seat. The view below was of Ueno's greenery and Shinobazu Pond. On a nice day, the terrace seats looked inviting. I ordered a Super Dry draft beer for 780 yen, while my companion had a barrel-aged sparkling wine, which tasted somewhat like juice and wasn't to my liking. I should have just gone with the beer.
I decided to try the traditional Beef Stew for 2,780 yen (tax included), which came with bread and rice for a total of 3,100 yen (tax included). This dish, made with the "Demiglace sauce" that has been a representative taste of Seiyoken since its establishment in Meiji 5, was cooked for over a week. The beef stew was tender and flavorful, with large chunks of beef simmered to perfection. The pasta at the bottom of the pot, similar to flat udon noodles, soaked up the delicious flavor. It had a rich and deep umami taste, yet it was not overpowering, leaving a refined flavor that made me appreciate its quality.
I also tried the Melba-style Peach Parfait for 1,500 yen (tax included), which is a limited quantity item popular during this season. The parfait consisted of tangy raspberry ice cream, creamy vanilla ice cream, refreshing peach jelly, and lightly simmered fresh peach compote in syrup. Although I wished the peach was fresh instead of compote, it satisfied my craving for peaches.
Seiyoken, a longstanding restaurant that caters to the stomachs of many people in Ueno, provided excellent service with a smile. Both the Beef Stew and Peach Parfait were delicious, and I left feeling very satisfied. I would definitely visit again when in the mood for Western cuisine in Ueno.
