I love casual bars, especially when I can drink in the morning. This time, I visited a branch of the famous casual bar "Daitoryo" for the first time. While I had the chance to visit some amazing restaurants in Tokyo this time, my greatest joy is actually in places like this. I was especially excited for this visit because I brought a custom blend of shichimi chili pepper from "Hachimanya Isohachigorou," a famous chili pepper shop near Zenkoji Temple in Nagano. I wanted to fully enjoy the grilled and stewed dishes at "Daitoryo" with this shichimi chili pepper. I arrived early in the morning, but there were already many customers inside. First, I ordered a beer, along with the stew. The quick service was exactly what makes this casual bar a famous spot. The stewed offal with tofu was delicious. It paired well with the shichimi chili pepper I brought. The grilled offal was also ordered, five skewers at the chef's recommendation. Normally, I would have chosen sake or shochu after the beer, but on this day, I opted for hoppy. Perhaps the atmosphere influenced my choice. I added more offal cuts like tripe, pork cheek, and beef intestines to the grilled dish. The hoppy went well with the flavor of the shichimi chili pepper. I ordered another round. Lastly, unsure of when I could visit again, I added another stew to avoid any regrets. It was delicious as expected. As long as this stew is available, I will continue to visit whenever I come to Tokyo. I hope this place will last forever. That's my sincere wish for this outstanding restaurant.

Located 2 minutes walk from Ueno Station, 5 minutes walk from Okachimachi Station, and 9 minutes walk from Yushima Station. I wanted to have a daytime drink in front of Ueno Station, so I visited the branch of "Daitoryo," founded in 1950. It seems to be a famous spot known for its motsu (offal) stew and grilled motsu dishes during daytime. It was bustling with a full house during the daytime on a holiday. There is a waiting area in a cool place inside the restaurant, so we were guided there and waited for a while. We were seated in about 15 minutes. The interior of the restaurant is quite clean and feels comfortable to drink. We started by ordering bean sprout kimchi, motsu stew, and grilled motsu assorted plate. Personally, I'm not a big fan of motsu stew, but I was able to eat it here (maybe because the flavor is strong). The grilled motsu was cooked thoroughly over charcoal and tasted authentic. The bean sprout kimchi was too salty, so be careful. We then added skewers and bone-in sausages. The bone-in sausages dipped in mayonnaise were the dark horse! The perfect combination of saltiness and a hint of sweetness made it the ultimate snack. We each had 2-3 drinks and the total bill for two people was 4000 yen. The drinks like highballs were strong in alcohol content, so you can get properly drunk. It's recommended for good value daytime drinking. Thank you for the meal!

Especially along the JR train tracks under the guardrails, you'll find a row of charming bars. It has a different vibe from Akabane. One of the most famous bars in Ueno's bustling district is "Motsuyaki Daitouryou." They have both a main store and a branch nearby, making it convenient. The main store is right under the guardrails and is always packed, while the branch has more seating, including outdoor seating, making it easier to get into. However, it also fills up quickly. There are countless menu options, but I recommend the following signature dishes:
- Medium-sized draft beer
- Motsu (offal) stew: A classic dish to accompany alcohol, and this one uses horse meat, giving it a light taste that pairs perfectly with drinks.
- Chef's choice motsuyaki skewers: The specialty of the house, where the chef selects skewers for you, likely including liver, heart, tongue, intestines, and cheeks. Ueno's popular motsuyaki restaurant, Daigensui, located in Ameyoko. This place is crowded from noon onwards, a holy place for daytime drinking. Even though it's still hot outside, we started drinking at the outdoor tables with pipe chairs in front of the shop. It's packed inside with a great atmosphere. The large counter at the back is filled with customers. This place must be making a lot of money. By the way, you can't make reservations. This time, I lined up for about 30 minutes to secure a seat for a meeting at 6 pm.

Legendary day of hopping 11 bars for drinks. Started at the classic "Daitoryo" as recommended. They said you'll get drunk starting here, and they were right. We arrived at 11 am but it was already full, with a waitlist of 6 groups!! Surprised by how popular it is for Ueno drinking. The turnover was fast, so we got seated in less than 30 minutes. It was scorching hot that day, but thankfully we sat in the shade. Ordered: Vinegared octopus, Kobukuro, Horse sashimi, Grated radish, Lemon sour, Umeboshi sour. Grated radish for 100 yen unlimited, a great deal. On a hot day, sour food is a must. Kobukuro is a must-try, a specialty with shochu. I opted for shochu highball style, which was 80% shochu.
