OLDHIROBO
It's been almost 2 years since my last visit. This time, my wife and I visited the area around Azabu-Juban for a walk. We arrived at exactly 12:00 on a Saturday. There were plenty of seats available inside when we peeked in from outside. We purchased our meal tickets at the ticket machine. This time, my wife ordered the main menu item, the "Pure Chicken Soba" with chicken white broth. As for me, since I had already tried the chicken white broth last time, I opted for the "Chicken and Sardine Chinese Soba" and added some dumplings. We sat at the counter, around the middle, with 16 seats available. Some seats were surrounded by acrylic boards, and we chose to sit at one of those. Our dishes arrived in about 5 minutes. First, my wife's Pure Chicken Soba arrived. The bowl had a logo with the name of the shop, ICHIKORO, in alphabets with a design of a chicken in the shape of the letter "K". A minute later, my Chicken and Sardine Chinese Soba arrived. The bowl was different from the Pure Chicken Soba, with a white base and blue patterns, giving it a classic yet modern look. The soup looked like a house-style broth, but the oil droplets floating on the surface indicated it was chicken-based. Tucked beneath the soup were thin noodles similar to Hakata ramen. The toppings included chicken chashu, bamboo shoots, spinach, seaweed, and a half-flavored egg with diced yuzu on top. Now, onto the tasting. The thin noodles absorbed the soup well. Unlike the chicken white broth, the soup didn't leave a greasy feeling around the mouth. The flavor of the sardines dominated over the chicken, and the soy sauce saltiness was quite strong, almost too salty for my taste. My wife, who tried the soup later, agreed with me. Perhaps the young chef made it too salty. The gentle taste of chicken was missing. The chicken chashu had a firm texture and was seasoned just right, complementing the soup without overpowering it. The flavored egg had a light brown color, not too salty, and the yolk was slightly firmer than last time. In conclusion, while the dish was tasty, it didn't quite reach the level of perfection found in the main menu item, the Pure Chicken Soba. It was good, but since our expectations were high, we were a bit critical. Next time, I think I'll go back to ordering the chicken white broth.
