からあげべんとう
An old steakhouse in Shinjuku that has been around for a long time. Similar to Aruden, it has a straightforward and sturdy charm that is refreshing. The cleanliness of the restaurant is also good.
[Atmosphere]
During weekday lunch hours, there is often a line outside, but when I went today (on a weekday) around 12:50, there was no wait. The style is to eat at the counter, so like a ramen shop, most people don't linger after finishing their meal, and the operation is speedy and efficient. By the time I finished eating and left the restaurant, there were about 5 people waiting. Unlike the hot sizzling iron plate dishes commonly found in old steak or Western-style restaurants in office districts, the dishes here are served on plates. This means you don't have to worry about oil splattering or smells sticking to your clothes, making it perfect for an office lunch. Of course, I also enjoy the hot sizzling iron plate dishes depending on the occasion!
The restaurant itself has a traditional feel, but the floor is not greasy and seems to be well maintained. (I have not been to the restroom so I cannot comment on that)
[Food]
- Sirloin set meal 1500 yen (mini salad, rice, 150g steak)
I remember the set meals used to be around 1100-1200 yen, but the prices have gone up recently. However, the price, portion, and taste are well balanced. If you don't specify, the steak will be served rare to medium rare. I find this doneness just right. I used to always choose rib roast, but recently I have been opting for sirloin. The rib roast had a strong "eating the red meat" vibe, while the sirloin has just the right amount of fat, making it tender and delicious. The sauce has a slightly smoky flavor. The side of green beans and potatoes is quite filling.
[Overall impression]
As I am starting to forget what the rib roast tasted like, I would like to try the rib roast or perhaps the sirloin & rib roast pair on my next visit.
