Arrived at the restaurant at 12:40 on a regular day. The interior had about 6 counter seats and 2 tables, with only about 30% of the seats occupied. Initially wanted to order the fried rice set, but they were not offering it. Ended up getting a lunch set (mini rice + 4 dumplings) instead. They charged extra for pickled vegetables, which I assumed would be on the table since it's a popular Hakata restaurant. I also wanted to have a beer, so I splurged and purchased the following meal tickets: ramen 700 yen + pickled vegetables 100 yen + lunch set 250 yen + medium beer 580 yen = 1,630 yen. I requested the ramen noodles to be firm. They offered Kirin and Asahi beer, and I chose Kirin. It was nice that I could choose the beer brand. Within a minute of placing my order, the pickled vegetables and bottled beer were served. I wanted to take a photo and have a sip of beer, but before I could, the ramen was served. The speed of service was like in Hakata, and I expected the quality to be authentic.
Ramen:
First, I tried the soup...hmm, it's a bit light. The pork bone flavor wasn't strong, and the seasoning was also lacking. It didn't have that universal appeal without the distinct pork bone flavor, unlike chains like Ichiran or Ippudo. Next, I tried the noodles. They were like those from Hakata, but I couldn't really feel any unique characteristics. As I was eating with mixed feelings, the rice was served.
Lunch set:
The lunch set was supposed to come with mini rice and dumplings, but first, they served rice and mini pickled vegetables. I didn't expect pickled vegetables to come with the lunch set, so I ended up with an extra serving. The rice portion was smaller than a regular rice bowl but still a decent amount. I tried the pickled vegetables with the rice, and it was a simple pickled vegetable with a hint of chili pepper, not heavily seasoned with sesame oil or other flavors. Personally, I would have preferred a more flavorful pickled vegetable. As I finished the ramen and was left with just the rice, the dumplings took quite a while to arrive. When they finally did, they were four mini dumplings. They had a vegetable-based filling and were easy to eat, but I wouldn't say they were particularly delicious.
Extra noodles:
I was eager to get an extra serving of noodles, but the taste of the soup made me hesitant. After some contemplation, I decided to order half an extra serving for 90 yen. It was served in about a minute. I tried eating the extra noodles with the ramen broth, but the unpleasant wheat smell from the noodles transferred to the soup, making it less tasty than before. In the end, I mixed the ramen broth with the pickled vegetables to finish it.
Overall review:
I had high expectations to taste the authentic flavors of a popular Hakata restaurant in Tokyo, but I was quite disappointed with the outcome. The ramen soup was light, lacking depth and richness. It couldn't compare to the Shin-Shin Ramen I had recently in Hakata. The noodles also had a noticeable wheat smell. Moreover, the service was not efficient, and the order in which dishes were served seemed to change due to kitchen issues. In the end, the 1,720 yen lunch didn't seem worth it. I won't be visiting again.
