After enjoying a mysterious beef noodle dish, I had some time to spare so I decided to visit another restaurant. It had been a while since my last visit, but the traditional atmosphere and nostalgic feel of the place were quite charming. The clientele mostly consisted of elderly customers, who were there for gatherings, sightseeing breaks, post-shopping meals, or even busy businessmen using it for lunch. And in the evenings, they could also accommodate banquets, making it quite convenient. The staff, many of whom were older, had remained unchanged for decades. Now, onto the lunch menu - I decided to go for their signature dish, the "Sweet Maruko Rice" priced at 920 yen (tax included). It consisted of 7 sweet and sour meatballs served with molded white rice on a single plate. This dish, with only 7 meatballs and no vegetables, has remained unchanged in its simplicity over the years. Unfortunately, the rice was a bit too soft today. Despite that, I keep coming back for the sake of nostalgia and the fact that the price has remained the same for 4-5 years in this day and age is truly remarkable. It's nice to visit this place occasionally.

The "〇〇 Rice Series" is known for its generous portions, and the sweet and sour pork rice dish was no exception. Despite being priced just under 1000 yen, it was quite filling even for a big eater like me, making it a good value for the money. However, some may find it expensive compared to chains like Osho or Hidakaya. When considering the performance in terms of meat quantity, variety of ingredients, cost ratio, seasoning, cooking techniques, and overall quality, the price difference of 100 or 200 yen may not seem high to some. On a different note, the weekly changing set meals offered options like A set meal for 1390 yen, B set meal for 1700 yen, and a C set meal featuring rotating noodle dishes and crab spring rolls. Despite seeming pricey, the C set meal caught my eye with its unexpected addition of "tantanmen" noodles and the offer of fried rice after 5 pm. It was a bit of a splurge, but I decided to try it, and it turned out to be a great choice. The portion of noodles was substantial, and with the added fried rice, the 1300 yen price tag felt more like a bargain compared to the usual rice dishes in the series. Another time, I decided to try the most expensive B set meal, which included my favorite "chicken with cashew nuts" and a well-prepared "stir-fried shrimp and broccoli" dish. Despite the 1700 yen price tag, the quality and taste of the dishes were exceptional, and I was completely satisfied. The generous portions of both dishes made it a challenge to finish the meal, especially with the no rice refill policy and the additional cost for extra rice. However, considering the quality and quantity of the food, it was well worth the 1900 yen spent, making it a great value for the money. Overall, the experience was extremely satisfying, even though the portion sizes were more than a regular person could handle. By sharing an additional rice dish, two people could easily enjoy the meal, making it a cost-effective option.

After visiting the Maru Cat Cafe in Ueno, a group of 8 people made a reservation and were seated at a round table in the back of the restaurant. The reservation was a bit difficult to make over the phone with a foreign staff member, but they were able to accommodate our request for a round table. The round table was enjoyable and the prices were reasonable. One thing that was a bit surprising was that we were served a small appetizer before our lunch, and at the end when we were paying separately, we were told there was a 200 yen charge per person for the appetizer (totaling 1600 yen). We hadn't been informed about this, so it was a bit disappointing. Also, the timing of the food being served was a bit disorganized, with some people finishing their meals before others received theirs. Despite these minor issues, we had a good time. We ordered the weekly lunch set which included fried rice and squid with Chinese broccoli. The flavors were Japanese-style and delicious. I also received a photo of my friend's rice set, so I will share that as well.

I recently started a job that involves going back and forth between Narita Airport and Keisei Ueno. There are shifts where I take a break at the airport and shifts where I take a break at Ueno Station, and there is a restaurant just 20 seconds away from the resting place, across the pedestrian crossing (Shinobazu-guchi). I had been wanting to visit this restaurant for about 30 years since I first heard about it when I used to work in Yushima. The restaurant has a large hall on the first floor and a banquet space on the second floor. It has a nostalgic feel and seems to have a rich history. The menu features authentic Beijing-style dishes, which are not your typical "street Chinese" or "high-end Chinese" or "modern Chinese" or "continental Chinese" cuisine, but a unique genre that represents the authentic Chinese cuisine of the Showa era. I ordered the "Sweet and Sour Meatball Rice" dish, which I had seen on a food review website and instantly fell in love with. The meatballs were deep-fried and coated with a sweet and sour sauce, which was a unique twist on the traditional sweet and sour pork. The meatballs were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, bursting with flavor. It was a delightful experience, and I immediately planned to revisit the restaurant on my next shift. Next, I tried the Tianjin rice, which came with a delicious egg soup. The egg soup had a perfect consistency and flavor, and the rice dish itself was generous with fluffy egg layers. Overall, the experience was delightful, and I was impressed by the quality and taste of the dishes. It was a great decision to visit this restaurant, and I look forward to trying more of their menu items in the future.

Located right next to Keisei Ueno Station, this Chinese restaurant is adjacent to Shinobazu Pond. The exterior has a rather old-fashioned feel. It is said to be a long-established restaurant with a history of 60 years. I ordered the fried rice lunch set. The egg drop soup was quite delicious. However, I had to wait quite a while after the soup was served. But the fried rice and other dishes were quite skillfully prepared. If you don't mind the service, it's a good restaurant. It may not be suitable for those who are a bit picky.

After returning from the art museum in the evening, a little before 5 PM. The seat was spacious. If you order a mystery dish that is partially specified at night, you get a glass of beer. A good deal. I ordered stir-fried squid and celery, shrimp and egg stir-fry, dumplings, and fried rice. They were all reliably delicious, and the seats were spacious. I was able to enjoy dinner slowly for the first time in a while. The waiter, an older gentleman, may not be the friendliest, but that's not a problem. Thank you for the meal.

I went to Ueno Park because the cherry blossoms had bloomed. The cherry blossoms near the frog fountain were beautiful, and many people, including foreign tourists, were taking commemorative photos. I got hungry and decided to go to a nearby Chinese restaurant. The restaurant I visited this time, "Hōraikaku," was a large building where the entire building was a store, with the first and second floors for customers. We were seated at a table on the first floor. We were quickly provided with hot towels, chopsticks with the restaurant's name, and cold water, and we looked over the menu. I decided to order something I hadn't tried before, which seemed interesting. The beef and vegetable rice bowl cost 950 yen. First, soup was served, which had beaten eggs with a smooth texture and a gentle flavor. Then, the main dish arrived. The bowl was mostly filled with beef and komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach). The vibrant green komatsuna was visually striking. It was my first time eating such a large amount of komatsuna at once. I learned that komatsuna and chingensai (Chinese cabbage) are similar vegetables in the mustard family, but komatsuna has thinner stems and higher nutritional value than chingensai. The seasoning was mainly oyster sauce, with a slightly salty taste. The beef was delicious and gave a quick stamina boost. The komatsuna had a crunchy texture and was enjoyable to eat. The other ingredients included bamboo shoots and shiitake mushrooms, which was a nice surprise. The rice portion was larger than expected, and each ingredient paired well with the rice, making it a satisfying meal. I happily finished the meal, and the staff brought hot tea before we paid in cash. While it's nice to have an idea of the taste of typical Chinese dishes, trying new and unexpected dishes can be exciting. I really enjoyed the meal. Thank you.

Yesterday, the weather continued to be warm, and the only thing that felt cold was my heart. I walked north on the main street, passed by a porn theater, and headed towards a Chinese restaurant that was already open early. I wondered if they still make new porn films for theaters, or if they just repeat old ones, or maybe they show DVDs meant for sale in theaters. It would be nice if they showed them in the best screen in Japan, the IMAX Laser/GT Technology at Ikebukuro Grand Cinema Sunshine Penthouse. As I pushed open the glass door of the old Showa-era building, I saw a party with a man and three middle-aged women, which made me feel a little more relaxed. The menu only had individual items, so I avoided ordering the mapo tofu that I had tried before. The atmosphere in the spacious and dimly lit room was unique. I sat alone at a small, old round table and remembered a scene from a movie I saw on Sunday, where the main character mentioned that the coffee cup-shaped rotating table in the center was actually a Japanese invention. I ordered the weekly lunch set which included fried rice and "stewed shrimp and vegetables" for 1,080 yen. The meal started with soup and a side dish similar to Chinese pickles, which was served in a small dish. The main dish soon arrived on a plate! However, to my dismay, there was a shiitake mushroom, my eternal enemy, on the plate. I have been trying to overcome my dislike for shiitake mushrooms, but this one was too strong for me. I used salt from my bag and soy sauce from the table to adjust the flavor. Despite the shiitake, the bamboo shoots and broccoli provided enough balance. I chose fried rice instead of white rice, which worked well, and the side dish complemented the meal nicely. The atmosphere in this twilight restaurant, with its focus on "richness," appealed to me. As I finished my meal, a group of young women and another group of two women entered, making me the only man in the restaurant. Surprisingly, this retro space seemed to be popular among women. Two women sat at the table in front of me, and one of them went to the restroom, leaving me face-to-face with the other woman. She was beautiful, with long black hair reminiscent of a character from a period drama, making me feel awkward and nervous. I finished my meal and stood up, feeling full.

I have been curious about this place for a while, so I decided to have lunch here. The area is dark, sandwiched between the station and a park, and it doesn't seem like there are many customers, but once you enter the restaurant and go further inside, you'll find a surprisingly spacious and well-decorated space. It feels like being in Chinatown. There were quite a few customers as well. I ordered the following dishes: - Chicken wing and vegetable stew with fried rice set for 1080 yen: The egg corn soup served at the beginning was rich and delicious. The spicy and flavorful edamame with pickled mustard greens was a great side dish. The main dish, the authentic Chinese fried rice, was different from typical local Chinese restaurants. The fragrant star anise-flavored roast pork was excellent. The chicken wing and vegetable stew was tender and flavorful, with the large and juicy shiitake mushrooms soaking up the delicious sauce. The chewy glass noodles were also great. This lunch set was a big hit and might be the best one. - Beef, leek, and shrimp yakisoba for 1280 yen: This was like Shanghai-style fried noodles with lots of ingredients, making it a truly authentic Chinese fried noodle dish. It was delicious, although having only one small shrimp in a shrimp yakisoba dish was a bit disappointing. The portion might be a bit small for men. - Jumbo dumplings for 680 yen: You can choose between 3 or 6 dumplings, but since there were two of us, the staff kindly offered to make 4 dumplings. The taste was decent and typical of dumplings you can find anywhere. I might not come back specifically for these. This place seems to excel in simmered dishes, as the fried noodles were delicious and the fried rice was amazing. The lunch fried rice sets come in three varieties and change frequently. This place is definitely a top candidate for lunch in Ueno. Thank you for the meal!

On November 29th, first visit at 12:08. Located quietly near the Ueno Station on the Keisei Line, at the Furukawa Exit. The front of the restaurant is about two and a half meters wide, but once inside and guided to the back, there is a spacious area with high ceilings, where I was told to choose a table from round or square tables for several people. This area seems to have been in operation for a long time due to its ample space. I ordered the Fried Rice Set (Type I) for 1,080 yen. Payment by card is accepted. I was immediately served a chopstick rest with stir-fried squid and komatsuna, Chinese egg drop soup, and a mixture of edamame and pickled mustard greens. The main dish arrived in about 5 minutes. I was surprised that it was served on one plate. First, the squid and komatsuna were cooked perfectly, with the komatsuna being crunchy and the squid very tender, with a good balance of salt. The fried rice was moist and subtly seasoned with spices that would be used in authentic Chinese cuisine, giving it a Japanese-Chinese fusion feel. The only downside was that the sauce from the squid and komatsuna mixed with the fried rice, so it would be better if they were served separately. The large shumai dumpling felt like a bonus, and I finished the meal with a lychee in syrup. Overall, I think this is a very good restaurant to enjoy a relaxing Chinese meal in the Ueno area.

I heard about a mysterious spot sandwiched between Ueno Park's entrance and Shinobazu Pond, so I decided to check it out. I entered a Chinese restaurant called "Penglai Pavilion" and was welcomed by a man who quickly ushered me inside. The restaurant was spacious, but I was the only customer there, which made me feel a bit lonely. I ordered the weekly lunch special which included fried rice and a set meal. The food arrived quickly, and I enjoyed a dish that reminded me of a restaurant called "Kodotei" in Yurakucho Big Camera. The meal was tasty, but not as impressive as "Kodotei." Overall, I was satisfied with my meal, and the restaurant's old-fashioned charm added to the unique experience of dining there.

The store has a high-class atmosphere, but the prices are quite reasonable! The shrimp fried rice is 900 yen and has a salty edge that I really like. The quality of the shrimp is amazing - the taste and aroma are so rich. The soup is also well-made and delicious. I was surprised by the balance of taste and price, it's really worth it. I visited on a holiday at 3pm and there were no customers, yet they were mysteriously open all day. I might become a regular here.

A Chinese restaurant located very close to Keisei Ueno Station. The first floor is for customers, but there is also a private room on the second floor with a round table for groups. I ordered the chilled Chinese noodles that day. It had a sesame sauce flavor. They also offer regular chilled Chinese noodles and vegetable chilled Chinese noodles. The noodles were chewy and plentiful, making it quite a filling dish! It had plenty of chicken, a large tomato, baby corn, and lettuce with lots of ingredients. There are many affordable set meals for lunch, and I am interested in trying other menu items as well.

It's been a long time since I visited this place. Although the number of infections is decreasing, I'm a bit worried about the period after the Golden Week. At times like this, this place is a precious space where you can eat comfortably in a large setting. Since I haven't visited in a while, I forgot the proper way to order lunch. There is no lunch menu, you have to choose from the signs on the wall! That's right. That's right. "Rice set menu is E"! The main dish is "Squid and Chinese cabbage". First, the soup and pickled vegetables arrive. After a while, the rice and main dish come. It's a very simple stir-fry dish, but the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef make all the difference because it's so simple. The light flavor is lively, and the cooking of the squid and vegetables is excellent. I think the rice could be of better quality... but I had a delicious lunch after a long time. Thank you for the meal!

The total cost for the shrimp fried rice is 900 yen. Overall, "Houraikaku" is a recommended spot for those who love shrimp fried rice and traditional Chinese cuisine.

Hello. I am a salaryman in Minato-ku. Today, there was news about starting the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Isn't it too early? Could it be because there is a new dangerous variant out there, so they are promoting early vaccination? Or maybe they have some strange contract with pharmaceutical companies... On my way back from Ueno in early March, looking for a place to have dinner as the sun was setting, I stumbled upon this restaurant. The building looked like a high-class Chinese restaurant, but the service menu at the entrance had reasonable prices, so I decided to go in. The interior was classic with a slight Japanese touch and very spacious. I was seated at a round table for four. I ordered the mixed fried rice. First, they served the fried rice, followed by the mixed sauce. When I poured the sauce over the fried rice, it made a sizzling sound as it spread over the rice. The vegetables in the sauce were cut large and had a strong presence. The hot sauce soaked into the rice, making it soft and flavorful, and I enjoyed delicious fried rice after a long time. The taste was subtle and good. It's strange that it's not popular, but I thought with the right marketing strategy, it could become a hit.

It feels like time has stopped in this retro-style restaurant that seems straight out of the Showa era. Interestingly, the taste changes when the chef changes. So, when you visit after a long time, you might be surprised by the difference in taste. On this day, I had the combination set meal of fried rice and mapo tofu. The price was a bit high, but these days, it's considered healthy. Japanese consumers seek high-quality food at low prices. With labor and ingredient costs rising, it's natural for prices to increase monthly and yearly. Whether this is correct or not, please consult an expert. Now, let's dig into the mapo tofu, which is oily with chili oil and packs a spicy punch from the chili peppers. It makes you sweat. The fried rice is well-seasoned with plenty of chunks of roast pork. It's hearty. You can hear Chinese being spoken in the kitchen. The atmosphere is authentic. However, the portions are generous. I'm full now. Thank you for the delicious meal!

For lunch that day, I was just walking around without any particular purpose and was drawn to this menu, so I decided to visit for the first time. When I don't think about lunch and just walk around, I often end up at a Chinese restaurant (lol). I had the Mapo Eggplant Rice Set for 880 yen. It came with plenty of rice, pickles, and soup. The Mapo Eggplant was hot and just the right level of spiciness. I ended up putting the Mapo Eggplant on the rice to make a Mapo Eggplant Donburi at the end. It was a great decision to get the rice set instead of the fried rice set because I wouldn't have been able to do that with the fried rice set. It would be nice if they could improve the smoking separation in the restaurant a little more (^^;;).

I jumped into this restaurant without any prior knowledge because I was hungry at an odd hour and saw "酸辣湯麺" (Spicy and Sour Noodles) on the menu for 960 yen. It was raining, and I was in a dilemma. Inside, I realized it was a historic place with a decent atmosphere on the first floor. The Spicy and Sour Noodles matched my taste as expected from the appearance. When I took a bite, the spiciness hit me, with shiitake mushrooms and tofu being the main ingredients. It was interesting to find cilantro in it. Although it wasn't lacking in sourness, the spiciness prevailed as I continued eating. The noodles were medium thick. I didn't expect much, but I finished it without needing to adjust the flavor, so if I ever crave Spicy and Sour Noodles in Ueno again, I will definitely come back. ^_^ P.S. It was mentioned on the menu that from 5 p.m., a glass of beer comes with each dish, so I might aim for that time slot. Sometimes, such adventures can be enjoyable.

On the weekend, I had errands in Ueno. Before my appointment, I decided to look for a place to have lunch. I found this restaurant located on a street between Ueno Park and Shinobazu Pond. It looked a bit upscale from the outside, but the sign gave off a more casual vibe. It was a very hot day, so I decided to go in to cool off. The restaurant was quite spacious, with table seating near the entrance and more tables in the back. It was a little past 1 pm on Saturday, and there were only a few customers, so I chose a table that was available. I started with a draft beer and some pan-fried dumplings. The draft beer came with a complimentary appetizer of seasoned edamame and pickled vegetables, which paired nicely with the beer. The pan-fried dumplings arrived hot and crispy, with a generous amount of meat filling that was juicy and flavorful. For my main dish, I ordered stir-fried noodles with shrimp, garlic chives, and vegetables. The noodles were thin and had a nice crispy texture in some parts, while being soft in others. The seasoning was light, with a subtle soy sauce flavor that allowed the garlic chives to shine through. The dish was well-balanced and satisfying. The service was a bit rough around the edges, but overall, the atmosphere was pleasant. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food at this Chinese restaurant in Ueno. They have a wide variety of dishes on the menu, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with a group of friends.
