Already the 4th store haha, looking for snacks for the Shinkansen mini party. It's important to have easy-to-understand snacks with alcohol, right? So, we got a 3-cheese set for 1280 yen (Ski Queen, Gruyère, Ram raisin). Ski Queen, a goat whey cheese with a caramel flavor that's not too sweet and quite salty. Gruyère, wait, Gruyère shouldn't have this strong of a taste, right? It's too strong! But the star is the corned beef, it's so delicious! It melts in your mouth and the fat is just perfect. It's gone too soon though. The corned beef alone would be a 4-star taste! There are many other snacks made with processed meat at this shop, making it a fun place to explore. The staff are a bit dry, but the prices are a bit high, but you get to enjoy a variety of snacks in small quantities, making it a good set for adult drinkers.

I had some time before my train, so I decided to visit Koshizuka inside Ecute Shinagawa. It was a Sunday afternoon around 3 pm, with only one customer before me and one after me. I decided to buy a Reuben sandwich for dinner later, which cost 630 yen. It was a brown, chewy bread sandwich with brown rice and California prune puree, filled with corned beef, shredded cabbage, and cheddar cheese. I ate one as it was and toasted the other. The toasted sandwich had a crispy bread and melted cheese, making it even more delicious. While it may not be ideal for eating on a train, toasting it at home is a must! It had been a while since I had Koshizuka's corned beef, and it was still delicious. Thank you for the meal!

I purchased their popular item, "Homemade Corned Beef" (400g for 2,140 yen) at this shop. The corned beef is handcrafted by skilled artisans. They carefully trim off excess fat, cut the meat into appropriate sizes, and marinate it in a secret seasoning for two days. Then, it is pressure-cooked for two hours to intensify the flavor, adding Japanese beef fat and shredding it by hand. The meat used is Australian beef brisket called "Brisket." When eaten as is, the fat melts in your mouth, releasing a rich umami flavor. However, consuming a large amount on its own may feel greasy, so it is recommended to eat it with bread or other accompaniments. Surprisingly, it was delicious when served on freshly cooked rice with a small amount of wasabi and soy sauce drizzled on top. It can last in the refrigerator for 3-4 days and can also be frozen, making it a convenient item to have on hand.

The Beef Tendon and Konjac Miso Stew, Beer Salami, and Smoked Bacon and Cheese snacks are all available as individual items for 580 yen each. For a meal option, there is the Reuben Sandwich (580 yen). I tried the Smoked Bacon and Cheese snack (580 yen), which uses high-quality Danish bacon selected by Koshizuka. Inside Shinagawa Station, there is a delicatessen in Ecute Shinagawa that operates as a butcher shop. I visited to buy lunch on a weekday. The Foodlog score at the time of visit was 3.08 (August 2021). They offer charcuterie that could be great for meat dishes or snacks, as well as sandwiches and rice dishes using meat. In particular, their corned beef, a popular item featured in the media, caught my attention. I purchased the Reuben Sandwich (580 yen). 400 Kcal. [Reuben Sandwich (580 yen)] A sandwich with Koshi-zuka's corned beef, cheddar cheese, and cabbage. The corned beef is served cold, but when you let it sit on your tongue for a bit, it melts, allowing you to taste the richness of beef fat. I'm not a big fan of canned corned beef, but this one had a subtle aroma and was delicious. The cheese and cabbage also complemented it well. The counter offers products from the Chitake and Jiyugaoka branches of Koshizuka, with this one being from the former. They sell items such as corned beef, berry ham, sausages, bento boxes, sandwiches, and various assortments. I purchased the "Corned Beef Bibimbap" for 1,080 yen, which consists of barley rice topped with corned beef, onsen tamago (soft-boiled egg), komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach), zenmai (bracken fern), and mung bean sprout namul. The key difference this time was heating the rice first in the microwave, which resulted in the corned beef fat melting beautifully. The sweetness of the fat and the tender texture of the meat fibers enhanced the overall flavor. The only downside was that there wasn't enough corned beef, so I plan to buy extra next time. Update: Due to the lack of corned beef in the "Corned Beef Bibimbap," I revisited the counter and purchased corned beef separately, a snack plate, beef stew, and hamburger. Adding plenty of corned beef to warm rice and letting the fat melt was still the best way to enjoy it.

I thought it would just be a simple can of corned beef, but they had various other products like ham as well. The homemade corned beef from Sendagi Koshizuka costs 2,140 yen for 400g. I started eating it a few days ago, but I still haven't finished it. It's not something you can just gobble up quickly. The taste is amazing. Those who have tried it recommend having it with rice topped with a raw egg, but that's not my thing, so I just eat it as is. The texture and sweetness of the salted high-quality Japanese beef, hand-pulled by craftsmen, make it a delicacy. It's delicious precisely because it's not good for you. Emergency food like corned beef is perfect for the current emergency situation. With restaurants closing at 8pm, you might find yourself stranded for dinner. In times like these, this extremely delicious corned beef pairs perfectly with a home-drinking beer. Highly recommended.

I wasn't a big fan of corned beef, but since there were many other options, I decided to give it another try. I found my favorite item this time, so I chose it - the homemade menchi katsu sandwich. It looks thick and big! When I opened the lid, the smell of meat was amazing! The bread is hard toast like a Reuben sandwich. The finely chopped cabbage sandwiched with the menchi katsu is slightly crunchy but moist. The menchi katsu tastes like you're eating meat and it's delicious! The rich sweetness of the meat goes well with beer, it's the best!

After a long time, I went to Ekiute Shinagawa to find something that goes well with beer on the Shinkansen. There was a new shop called "Koshizuka"! I heard that name somewhere before, and when I looked at the products they were selling, it was corned beef. Oh! I remember seeing someone (maybe a comedian?) on TV saying, "What is this? It melts! I've never eaten anything like this before." I feel like those kinds of things look a bit fake for some reason. Especially when people open their eyes wide right after putting it in their mouth, it makes me think they don't really understand the taste. But, there are people who buy it when it's featured on TV. I ended up buying the "Corned Beef-Rich Reuben Sandwich" (^◇^;) There is a reason for this, I don't really like corned beef so I probably haven't eaten it in over 10 years, so if it tastes different from regular corned beef, I thought maybe I could eat it! It was also reasonably priced at 580 yen. It looked like it had a lot of corned beef. The bread was slightly firm whole grain bread. The taste of cheddar cheese was strong. I didn't really feel like the corned beef was melting. It was easier to eat than regular corned beef, but the unique taste of corned beef still lingers at the end. However, the texture is definitely different. Maybe the taste changes again if you just eat the corned beef on its own, but it costs around 2000 yen for 400g, so if you like corned beef, please try it out!

I bought it as a snack to enjoy with beer on the Shinkansen. Koshizuka is famous for its corned beef. It was a set that goes well with beer. The bacon cream cheese had a lot of fatty parts, but it tasted good with alcohol except when you hit a fatty spot. The corned beef potato salad was so delicious that I want to buy it separately.

I received a gift of Chitagi Koshizuka Homemade Corned Beef 400g for 2,480 yen as a souvenir from Tokyo. It is a high-quality corned beef made by mixing beef and beef fat. I usually only had corned beef from Meiji-ya or Nozaki, so I decided to try this high-end version. I bought a baguette from Bigo store on Route 2 in Ashiya for 280 yen to make an open sandwich. I thawed the frozen corned beef in the refrigerator and shredded it. I thinly sliced the baguette, spread butter, and lightly toasted it in the oven. First, I tried the corned beef alone. I finally got to try the Koshizuka corned beef that used to sell out quickly. When I opened it, I was surprised by the amount of fat sticking to it! It's very greasy. I tried it first simply over rice, and it tasted just right even without any additional seasoning. Personally, I feel like it can't beat horse meat yukhoe, legal yukhoe, or roast beef. For the rest, I suggest trying cooking it with vegetables, mixing it into potato salad, or adding it to pasta. It could work well as a substitute for anchovies with a slightly less salty taste. I wish they had a half size available, as I still have half left to finish!

Since Koshizuka-san from Ecute Shinagawa Station opened, it has become my recent routine to buy snacks here, purchase half bottles of wine from the neighboring wine shop, and then board the Shinkansen. Koshizuka-san is a butcher shop with its main store in Sendagaya. A while back, I wrote an article questioning why corned beef suddenly became so popular, and someone kindly informed me that it was because it was featured in magazines like dancyu and on TV. Thank you. Koshizuka-san's corned beef is rich in the umami and sweetness of wagyu beef! It is moist, without any off-flavors, and once you try Koshizuka-san's corned beef, you won't be able to eat any other corned beef. It's delicious eaten directly on freshly cooked rice, but my recommendation is to make a potato salad. The melted fat on warm rice is delicious, but when combined with fluffy potatoes, the fat and subtle saltiness spread throughout, requiring only a little salt, pepper, and mayonnaise for seasoning. I made it with Kitakarari potatoes this time, so the potatoes are yellow, but when made with regular white potatoes, the contrast between the white and the red of the corned beef is beautiful. It's great as a sandwich or placed on a crispy baguette. Since the corned beef is delicious, there's no way the potato salad won't be delicious. If you can get your hands on Koshizuka-san's corned beef, be sure to give it a try!
