On September 16, 2023 (Saturday) at 12:00, revisiting this day, we visited Furano for a day trip to visit our hometown. My wife, three sons, grandpa, and grandma, a total of five people, had lunch together to celebrate Respect for the Aged Day a little early. The restaurant we visited is called Furano Wine House, located on a small hill overlooking the Furano basin, known as Shimizu-yama, a familiar place for the people of Furano. The restaurant was founded in 1979, even before Furano became famous as a tourist destination and started to become known as a wine town.
My first visit was in the 1980s when I was a child of a farmer, and my sister and I were taken there for a rare outing during summer vacation. It was also where I learned how to use a knife and fork. My sister worked part-time here during her high school years. Even as an adult, I have visited this restaurant with my family many times. It is a restaurant that every resident of Furano has surely visited at least once.
The last time I visited was on January 4, 2020, so it had been three years since my last visit. This time, my wife, three sons, and I shared the Furano Cheese Fondue (2,365 yen). We also ordered the Kamifurano Pork 100% Hamburger Steak with Demi-glace sauce (1,177 yen) and the Sirloin Steak (150g) from Australia (2,090 yen). Grandpa also had the Sirloin Steak, while grandma had the Hamburger Steak with Japanese-style sauce. For drinks, my wife, grandma, and three sons had Oolong tea (385 yen), and grandpa had black tea (440 yen) after the meal. It was a luxurious dining table.
First, we had the Cheese Fondue. It was so delicious, I didn't remember it being this good. The cheese is just amazing, as expected in Furano. The bread was also delicious! We finished by devouring the bread soaked in cheese. My wife and three sons were so impressed by the deliciousness! The Hamburger Steak was also delicious! The fresh Kamifurano pork had a texture and juiciness similar to beef. It has been my favorite menu item since I was in elementary school, and I think it is quite unique!
The Sirloin Steak was cooked to medium-rare perfection. This is also my favorite level of doneness. The bill was discounted by 20% because grandma had a Furano resident-exclusive members card! The total amount for five people was 9,489 yen. On the way back, my wife, grandma, and three sons shopped for Furano's specialty products at the first-floor shop. They bought a pack of Cheese Fondue that can be stored at room temperature.
Grandpa and I went outside first and admired the magnificent view of the Furano basin spreading at the foot of the majestic Furano-dake. We pointed to the area around Higashi-Tomita, reminiscing about our childhood home. Coming here brings back a lot of memories from my childhood to the present, like a slideshow in my mind. I'm sure grandpa feels the same way.
"Sorry to keep you waiting!" My wife, grandma, and three sons came out. "It was delicious! Let's head back now!" Someday, we will look back on today as a good memory and reminisce about it nostalgically. With such sentimental feelings, we descended from Shimizu-yama. It was a wonderful meal! Thank you!
