The cold days have arrived, making it the perfect season for delicious oden. But when we talk about "oden," there are significant regional differences. Kanto oden has a bonito-flavored broth, while Kansai uses a dark broth with kombu dashi and strong soy sauce like in Shizuoka, or a base of Haccho miso like in Aichi, and so on. In Azabu-Juban, there is a long-established fish cake shop called Fukushima-ya, which was founded in 1921. They offer a delicious miso oden set meal inside the shop. I visited with my wife on a Sunday in early January. The current owner is the third generation, Mr. Tsuyoshi Fujita. Originally from Fukushima Prefecture, Mr. Fujita's grandfather sold fish cakes in Higashi-Azabu, which is where it all began. After the war, they relocated to the current Azabu-Juban shopping street, and in 2006, they started offering eat-in options. The set meal menu includes: Fukushima-ya's oden set meal for 1180 yen, Miso oden set meal for 1480 yen, Konjac set meal for 920 yen, Shumai set meal for 1180 yen, Braised pork set meal for 1380 yen, and Cold curry for 1380 yen. We both ordered the Miso oden set meal. The rich and sweet miso oden broth, simmered with Haccho miso from Aichi Prefecture, is full of the umami flavor of beef tendons. When poured over rice, it tastes like beef stew, and the tender beef tendons are exquisite. The delicious miso oden we had in Azabu-Juban was a true treat.
