Ikebukuro and Otsuka area are a bit weak in terms of gourmet options, with few delicious restaurants. However, one highly recommended meat restaurant in the area is "Tokyo En." There are several branches under the same name, including the ones in Yutenji, Hiroo, Shirokan, and Meguro, but for some reason, the most popular and highly rated ones are the main store in Otsuka and the Yutenji branch. I decided to visit the one in Otsuka this time, as a close friend of mine lives nearby and we wanted to have a delicious meal together. The area around the restaurant is not very appealing, with adult entertainment shops and love hotels mixed in, which I personally do not like. But that's just how Ikebukuro and Otsuka are, so it's unavoidable. I met up with my friend and went to "Tokyo En." The restaurant is located in the basement of a building, so you have to go down the stairs to get there. The building itself may need some renovation, but once you enter the restaurant, the interior is clean and welcoming. This place is known for serving high-quality beef at reasonable prices. Especially the main store in Otsuka manages to offer great meat despite the lower rent compared to the stores in Minato ward. We started with the tongue, which was delicious as expected. Then we tried the thick-cut skirt steak, which had a perfect balance of lean meat and marbling, with a tender texture that showcased the quality of the meat. It was really tasty. And the must-order dish here is the "10-second loin." The name suggests that it's cooked just right to prevent overcooking, as the staff cannot assist with grilling at each table due to the lower prices. It's a clever way to control the cooking time. The result is a tender and flavorful meat that melts in your mouth. It's incredibly delicious. We also had the short ribs, which were equally delicious! The quality of the meat could easily justify a much higher price at a luxury yakiniku restaurant in Minato ward. All the meats were exceptionally tasty and made us forget about the dirtiness of the building (laughs). I noticed a sign on the wall that said, "Quality liver that only a meat wholesaler can provide!!" Liver is a crucial item at a good yakiniku restaurant, and when the restaurant itself emphasizes the quality of their liver, you can't resist ordering it. While my friend usually dislikes liver, I ordered it without hesitation. The liver that arrived was beautifully red and fresh-looking. It's best enjoyed raw, but due to Japan's strict laws, it had to be grilled. The result was a soft, juicy, and flavorful liver without any unpleasant smell. It was truly exceptional. My friend, who initially said she didn't like liver, ended up eating half of it. The liver was so delicious that it changed her mind. As a meat lover, she seemed to become more energetic after enjoying the bright red liver (laughs). Overall, the quality of the meats paired with the reasonable prices is a testament to the restaurant's strong efforts. The only downside was the mediocre drink options. If they put more effort into their beverages, the dining experience would be perfect. Despite the building's cleanliness, the deliciousness of the food and the cost-effectiveness make you overlook it. I hope the Otsuka main store will regain its status as one of the top yakiniku restaurants in the area. After finishing the meal, we went to a nearby bar and then headed to the hotel district near the station. Quite a convenient location, isn't it? (laughs)
