Along the Chuo Line, residents of Asagaya are early risers! I visited KEGON cafe in 2013, which had been around for over 40 years, but it seems to have closed down. I remember the elderly locals lining up before opening hours, eagerly waiting for the cafe to open. I was curious about where those people were spending their mornings now, and it turns out they have found a new spot at this cafe. From Asagaya Station East Exit, walk along the stone-paved shopping street on the east side of the tracks. Pass by Gion cafe with swing seats, then confirm that a dentist has taken over the KEGON location, and continue down the road to find Yazette on the right. Next to it is a coin laundry. I visited around 7:20 am, just shortly after they opened, and was surprised to see 9 people already enjoying breakfast. It felt like the same people from 7 years ago at KEGON had moved here! The clientele is on the older side, which is probably why this cafe hasn't been widely shared online. It seems like they rely on Hitosara for their online presence. The owner is Miyuki Fujimaki, and the chef is Shigeru Nakano. Nakano, a former high school teacher, uses ingredients from his family's farm and his cooking skills are top-notch. He used to be a table tennis club advisor, and Fujimaki was one of his students. After Nakano retired, they started this cafe together. They offer two types of morning sets, A and B, both for 650 yen. I ordered the A set. I got permission to take photos. Classic BGM played softly in the background. Soon, soup and salad arrived. The tomato soup was rich with mushrooms and vegetables, and the salad had greens, cherry tomatoes, boiled eggs, and Italian dressing. The soup had a perfect balance of tomato sweetness and acidity, with plenty of chopped ingredients to warm you up from the inside. The salad was generous and the slightly tangy dressing brought out the flavor of the vegetables. Hot coffee and buttered toast followed. The coffee was a medium roast with a mild bitterness, easy to drink. Spread the melting butter, add berry jam on the toasty bread. The jam's balance of sweetness and acidity was delightful. It was a wonderful breakfast. When I reached for my medicine, they discreetly brought me hot water. This cafe is a hidden gem that you'd want to visit often if it were nearby.
