[January 2016 Lunch Visit]
It's been two weeks since my last visit (lol). Surprisingly, there was a line even at 2 PM, showing the growing popularity of this place. Nevertheless, I didn't have to wait long to get in. During lunchtime, it's mostly 7:3 to 8:2 ratio of women. The interior of the restaurant has changed slightly with more tables added to accommodate more people at the back. I decided to order the classic Copchanchige to burn off the holiday fat with capsaicin and heal my knees damaged from running with collagen injection. Looking at the group of girls next to me, they all seemed to have chosen the Copchanchige as well. Similar tastes, maybe? (lol) The side dishes for the day were bean sprout namul, napa cabbage kimchi, and potatoes, along with tofu. The Copchanchige was as delicious as ever with just the right amount of spiciness. The lunch menu has expanded slightly with options like Manduk (similar to Chinese dumplings). The prices are reasonable, with the most expensive item being 880 yen and the service is efficient. Looking forward to another year of enjoyable visits.
[September 2015 Lunch Visit]
After a long time, I visited this place for lunch. It had been about two months. The queue was as long as ever. It seems to be competing with Shiroginya and Menya Sho for the top spot in popular lunches in this area of Nishi-Shinjuku. They have added more tables at the counter space towards the back, increasing the seating capacity slightly. Even around 11:50 AM, there was already a line forming. The satisfaction of dining here is truly remarkable. Among the three mentioned restaurants, this one is my favorite. It seems like some new staff have joined, mostly of Korean descent, and their hospitality is excellent. It's time to let go of the misconception that only Japanese people can provide good customer service.
[November 2014 Lunch Visit]
'Tis the season for oysters! I tried the seasonal menu item, Oyster Sundubu Jjigae, and it was delicious with generous portions of oysters and tofu. The spiciness was just right, not making me sweat profusely even while wearing a dress shirt. The side dishes are always a treat, especially the fried tofu and carrot stir-fry. The Sundubu Jjigae had a distinct aroma of clams and mussels, with a rich umami flavor. The spiciness was refreshing yet substantial. With several dumplings included, the meal was satisfying in both taste and quantity for 880 yen. I am truly grateful for such a great deal.
[September 2014 Lunch Visit]
I tried a new menu item for the first time, Gyoza Sundubu Jjigae. In conclusion, it was delicious! And the cost performance was outstanding. The free-flowing side dishes of napa cabbage kimchi, bean sprout namul, and fried tofu with carrots were truly delightful. The Sundubu Jjigae had a clear aroma of clams and mussels, with a wonderful umami flavor. The spiciness was refreshing yet not overwhelming. The addition of gyoza provided a satisfying texture. For 850 yen, this lunch provided a good balance of vegetables, protein, and capsaicin. I will definitely be a repeat customer. The subtle hospitality of the staff, who all seem to be of Korean descent, was also impressive. Their attentiveness and kindness were truly remarkable.
[September 2014 Evening Visit]
Exceeding customer expectations... this is the key to significantly increasing satisfaction, and this place does just that. It's not a high-end gourmet restaurant or an artfully crafted royal cuisine, but rather a home-cooked style. Yet, the satisfaction from the taste, service, atmosphere, price, and quantity all exceeds expectations. It may not stand out much, but the satisfaction is undeniable.
