I took a break here after walking tired. It's located near the Ueno Park side gate, but it's a calm place and not too crowded, so I recommend it. I had a matcha parfait with soft serve ice cream, matcha jelly, shiratama (rice flour dumplings), sponge cake, red bean paste, and it was so satisfying that I was full.

Matcha latte and matcha kakigori are quickly served with a good turnover rate. Perfect for matcha lovers~ Located in a station building, it's convenient for meetups or a quick stop on the way home. The shiratama (rice flour dumplings) are chewy and delicious. The size is a bit big, so I cut it with chopsticks before eating.

The spacious interior of the shop is adorned with refreshing hand towels. It seems to be a long-established store in Kyoto since the late Edo period. Located right outside Ueno Station's Park Exit, it's a convenient stop after enjoying museums and art galleries. We visited around lunchtime on a holiday and were able to enter smoothly without waiting. On an extremely hot day, I opted for the cold shiruko dessert. The matcha sauce was not too sweet and contained crunchy ice, maintaining its coldness. The matcha flavor was rich and not diluted by the ice. The mochi balls were too big to eat in one bite, with a firm texture that might be a concern for elderly customers. However, the salted kombu placed next to it added a salty touch, preventing it from becoming monotonous. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit here, but I would definitely come back when in Ueno again.

This is a cafe in Ecute at Ueno Station that specializes in matcha. It is located on the second floor outside the Park Gate exit, not inside the ticket gates. The reviewer had some trouble finding it as they initially looked inside the ticket gates at Ecute and then had to exit at the Uenokoen Gate. The cafe was full around 12:30 pm on a Saturday, and the reviewer had to wait for a seat. The menu mainly consisted of udon (4 types) and udon with mixed rice sets. The reviewer ordered the kitsune udon and mixed rice set, which cost over 1000 yen, showing a price increase from previous reviews. They also ordered the Uji matcha tiramisu. The reviewer had to pay first and wait for their number to be called to pick up the food. The portion of udon seemed small, almost like a half-size bowl, but the taste was good with a Kyoto-style dashi. The kitsune udon was not too sweet, and the mixed rice had delicious Kyoto-style shredded sansho pepper on top. The tiramisu had a creamy layer with matcha powder on top and a thin matcha sponge cake layer at the bottom. Overall, it seems like this cafe is better known for its sweets.

During my previous visit with a friend, the place was crowded, but it was quite empty this time. The first drink had white pearls on top and was very generous in portion. Even without any toppings, I think I would have been satisfied. The tiramisu in the second picture was delicious, with the sweet top layer and bitter bottom layer complementing each other well.

After visiting the museum, everywhere was crowded so I decided to go to this relatively fast-paced restaurant. I ordered a set of cream sauce udon and mixed rice. The udon had a slightly strong salty taste. The rice was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. There was shredded mountain pepper on top of the rice, adding a nice touch. The portion was generous and I left feeling full. The matcha sweets also looked delicious, so I would like to try them next time.

The Ueno area is crowded even on weekdays, with popular art museums attracting many visitors. I spent the day visiting museums in the morning and afternoon. For lunch, I went to a restaurant in a commercial facility next to Ueno Station. The newly renovated Park Exit ticket gate looked nice. There were a few restaurants, but they were all crowded during lunchtime. I found a place called "Yanagi Teahouse" with a mix of people having lunch and using it as a café. I tried the "Shrimp and Avocado Cream Udon with Mixed Rice (1,144 yen)" and enjoyed the flavorful combination. The mixed rice was a nice touch, and overall, I was quite satisfied with the set. The price was reasonable for this type of place.

Before saying goodbye to my friend at Ueno Station, we decided to have some tea before heading home. We couldn't find many cafes around, but then we stumbled upon this place on the 2nd floor of Ecute. They had sets with sweets and drinks which seemed like a good deal, but I was still full so I just ordered a matcha for 594 yen. Since it was close to the station, we made sure to check our train times and ended up chatting until the very last minute. It was a nice way to end our time together.

[3.5 rating] Visited on 3/28. A shop located in Ecute near Ueno Station, close to the park exit. I arrived in the early afternoon. About 80% of the customers were already there, a mix of all ages and genders. Inside the shop, I saw tables for 1 person, 2 people, and 4 people. I ordered the Uji matcha tiramisu for 759 yen and a set drink for 330 yen (tax included), choosing hojicha for the drink. I paid first and then waited at my table. The service was good, with polite staff. The tiramisu had matcha powder on top, a creamy layer underneath, and sponge cake. The downside was that the hojicha drink was too hot, which seemed to affect its flavor. The tiramisu didn't have a strong matcha flavor, the cream was too runny, and the combination of sponge cake and cream didn't quite work. Thank you for the meal.

Cafe on the 2nd floor outside the ticket gate at Ueno Station. While nearby shops had long lines, this cafe had plenty of sofa seats available, making it convenient for families with children. Despite it being early afternoon on January 3rd, the cafe was understaffed with only 2 people working, leading to overcrowding. It was difficult to tell what was sold out and what was still available, and the service was lacking due to long wait times. The system of securing a seat after paying also caused some confusion. However, the matcha drinks were of good quality with a strong tea flavor and aroma. With improved operations, this cafe could gain more popularity.

I used it for a break after finishing viewing the National Museum of Western Art around 13:30 on a regular day. It's a cafe outside the ticket gates at Ueno Station called Echute. It's a self-service cafe where you order at the counter, pay, and then pick up your order. I ordered the Uji Matcha Tiramisu for 715 yen (tax included), and my wife ordered the Warm Uji Matcha Shiratama for 935 yen (tax included). There were many customers around me eating udon for lunch. After about 5 minutes, our numbers were called and we went to the counter to pick up our orders. The tiramisu wasn't too strong in flavor, but it was delicious. The Uji Matcha Shiratama was also delicious.

When you exit Ueno Station Park Exit, you will find Yanagi Chaya inside Ecute Ueno. It was a holiday tea time, so we waited a bit and decided to dine in. We ordered the following:
- Matcha Azuki Shiratama Float (825 yen tax included)
It was delicious with rich matcha soft serve, red beans, shiratama, a small piece of Yatsuhashi, and plenty of matcha latte. The latte had no sweetness at all, so they offered to add simple syrup if desired, but it was already a refreshing latte with a light taste.

On a holiday afternoon, after visiting the Boston Museum of Fine Arts exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno Park, let's take a break and enjoy something sweet before heading home. This time, let's go to Yanagi Chaya on the second floor of Ueno Station's Park Exit. I've always been curious about Yanagi Chaya, which I see on the second floor every time I go to Ueno Park and head towards the station. Finally, I can visit it. There are escalators and an elevator from the side of the ticket gate to the second floor. Take the escalator up to the second floor, just before Good Spoon. When you arrive at the store, start by placing your order at the counter. I ordered Uji Matcha Tiramisu and a warm matcha latte, while my companion ordered Matcha Parfait and a warm hojicha tea. Luckily, there was a seat available. I sat down and waited, then went to pick up our order when our number was called. The Uji Matcha Tiramisu had matcha powder sprinkled on top, and was filled with plenty of mascarpone. I sometimes see tiramisu served in a masu, but this one was also delicious. The Matcha Parfait my companion ordered looked beautiful and she enjoyed eating it. As we left the store and descended to the first floor, we were right by the ticket gate. This is a convenient store. Thank you for the meal.

We stopped by for lunch with our family. The menu only had udon or udon sets, so I ordered the Sudachi Udon (¥759). It was a bit small and not very filling, but the taste was really delicious. My husband ordered the Udon Set (¥979), but the udon in the set was surprisingly small (about the size of a rice bowl) and we were quite shocked. We thought it was not enough since we ordered the set because we wanted something more than just udon.

Yanagi Chaya is located on the 2nd floor of Echute on the Ueno Park side. I visited again because I had delicious Kyoto-style udon here after visiting museums and art galleries. I used to think it was a udon-focused restaurant, but it seems that they specialize in a variety of matcha sweets. There are four types of Kyoto-style udon: sudachi, kitsune, Kujyo negi, and yuba ankake, and I had the Kujyo negi udon set. The udon had plenty of Kujyo negi and grated ginger on top, and the broth was rich and flavorful. The set also came with a small bowl of mixed rice with simmered small fish on top, which I quickly finished. The set price of 890 yen is very reasonable. The Uji matcha shiratama I tried on another day was luxurious, with surprisingly large shiratama. The staff warned me that each shiratama was big, so be careful when eating, and indeed, it took me about three bites to finish one. The matcha wasn't too bitter or too sweet, and it was delicious. Next time, I want to try the gorgeous matcha parfait on a hot day. Thank you for the meal.

This is a Japanese cafe specializing in matcha located on the second floor outside the ticket gates at the Park entrance of JR Ueno Station, which was renovated in spring 2020. They use matcha from the long-established tea merchant "Morihan," founded in Kyoto Uji and Ogura in 1836. Although I was interested in the Uji matcha tiramisu served in a masu, I opted for the special matcha parfait, which is not listed on the regular menu. Priced at 1,089 yen for just the parfait (tax included) or 1,419 yen for a drink set (tax included), I chose to add an iced matcha (priced at 539 yen) to my order. The parfait came with a side of Yatsuhashi, topped with delicious soft serve ice cream with a hint of matcha bitterness. Surrounding the matcha soft serve were shiratama, sweet red bean paste, whipped cream, warabi mochi, vanilla ice cream, and matcha jelly, all of which were delicious. The iced matcha had a refreshing taste without too much sweetness, which complemented the sweetness of the parfait.

When leaving Ueno Park after visiting museums, art galleries, and the zoo, you might feel like having something sweet. The YANAGI CHAYA café on the second floor outside the JR Ueno Station Park Exit is a perfect spot to enjoy matcha sweets. Matcha is no longer just for tea ceremonies, it's now a common ingredient in both traditional and Western sweets. The Uji Matcha Tiramisu served in a charming wooden box is a delicious treat with layers of matcha, cream, and matcha. The subtle sweetness and aroma of matcha make it quite tasty. The matcha drink served alongside is also delicious, no need for syrup. The café has a calm and elegant atmosphere, perfect for relaxing with tea and sweets. After a tiring day at "Ueno's mountain," this café is definitely worth revisiting.

Uji Matcha Shiratama (935 yen) looked more luxurious than on the menu, and in a good way, it felt like being pleasantly surprised! The shiratama balls were large and delicious! The matcha wasn't too bitter or too sweet, it was just right. I visited around 7 pm and there were no other customers, so I could relax and enjoy my meal. Thank you for the meal!

I went to Ueno after a long time and was surprised to see how much the station had changed. We decided to have tea, and chose this shop. I ordered the "Uji Matcha Shiratama" and was pleasantly surprised by the large size of the shiratama, but the matcha from Uji did not disappoint. It was vibrant in color and delicious, with a refined sweetness and a pleasant aftertaste. Ordering the hojicha set was the right choice. The seating area was not very spacious, but the bright traditional Japanese interior was calming.

Time had passed, so I decided to stop by here before meeting up with someone (currently 4/15). Despite it being a weekday, Ueno was extremely crowded. I was honestly surprised by how effective the "anti-infection measures" were. I ordered and took a seat, but the seating was just terrible. The single seats were narrow, the tables were small, and the seat I chose had a poorly positioned partition that made it impossible to place the tray flat. It looked like this. I saw the tables next to me had proper measures in place, so I just got unlucky. But seriously, why not do it for all tables? The neighboring tables looked like this. With such cramped seating and a partition right next to you, right-handed people can't eat comfortably. By creating such terrible seating arrangements, solo customers end up trying to sit at tables meant for two or more people, wasting space in the end. If they had made the seats a bit wider from the start, maybe more solo customers would choose to sit there. I ordered the Matcha Shiratama for 1265 yen, which had good reviews. However, the matcha sauce was extremely sweet, more like a sugary taste than matcha. Thanks to that, the salted kelp was surprisingly delicious (laughs). The shiratama was big, which was fun, but it wasn't exceptionally tasty (there are shiratama that can be impressive). It was just big. I feel like the shiratama I make at home is tastier. The red bean paste was very delicious, but I wish they had given more. Considering the price, in this day and age, maybe it can't be helped, but hmm... I decided to avoid coming here in the future.
