Located near Roppongi Midtown, just a short walk from Roppongi Station, is a hidden gem of a Hakata-style sukiyaki hot pot restaurant called "Kinsen". This restaurant is the Tokyo branch of a renowned restaurant in Haruyoshi, Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture. The specialty here is the "Hakata sukiyaki hot pot", with Tokyo kaiseki cuisine also available. The interior of the restaurant, accessed by descending underground, exudes a modern, stylish, and elegant atmosphere with a black and woody color scheme. Jazz music plays in the background, making it a perfect hidden gem.
I tried the most popular dish at the restaurant, the Hakata sukiyaki hot pot featuring Kyushu black wagyu triangle and Kagoshima black pork "Kurohodoubuta" course with 6 items. It's a luxurious hot pot where you can enjoy both black wagyu and black pork. Before the meal, we toasted with drinks - my friend had beer, while I had Ehime ripe mandarin juice.
For the meal:
- Assorted appetizers: a variety of dishes including edamame, eggplant and chili pepper tempura, sesame tofu, shirasu and myoga salad, burnt rice and wagyu tomato miso, simmered kombu and shiitake mushrooms, and fig compote.
- Hors d'oeuvre: a glass dish of silk gourd somen noodles with grated yam.
- Sukiyaki hot pot: a unique dish with a donut-shaped arrangement of meat on the edge of the pot, with a slowly cooked beef tail soup in the center. You cook the ingredients in the soup and enjoy them with two dipping sauces - salt-based tail soup and tomato-based soup.
- Finishing with udon noodles in the remaining tail soup.
We also enjoyed the rare sake variety, Juyondai, and ended the meal with peach compote, caramel ice cream, and Fukuoka Yame green tea. The sukiyaki hot pot was perfect for the hot summer, and the restaurant offers both table seating and private rooms, making it suitable for various occasions like business dinners, celebrations, anniversaries, and dates.
