I don't often come to the Asakusa area, so I wanted to try a famous place with a traditional Asakusa feel. That's why I came to "Umemura." I didn't particularly have a craving for sweet red bean jelly. I wasn't especially fond of it. In fact, I hadn't been interested in Japanese sweets in general until recently, and I had never felt like eating simple sweet red bean jelly. But this is for my own education. I don't like smooth sweet bean paste or yokan, but I do like sweet bean mochi lately, and it seems that the famous Inokashira Gorou visited this shop. Moreover, this shop seems to be the birthplace of sweet red bean jelly, so I wanted to visit at least once. When something is said to be the "birthplace," I feel compelled to check it out. The opening time is 12:30. I entered right after opening. There were only me and a group of two women who arrived shortly after. There is a counter, and I was asked to sit at the far end, right next to the register. There was a notice saying that only ordered items could be photographed to prevent trouble, so I couldn't take photos inside the shop. Well, that's okay, but the interior of the shop is too outdated. Well, for better or worse, this may be one of the charms according to those who like it. The taste is certainly there, but in front of the counter, there was that notice and probably a vinyl sheet put up, likely due to the COVID-19 situation, creating a sense of oppression. I think the vinyl sheet is unavoidable, but is it necessary to stick the menu items directly onto it? Am I the only one who feels like it's ruining the atmosphere of this old-fashioned traditional sweet shop? If it were just a transparent vinyl sheet, I probably wouldn't have thought this way. Now, the sweet red bean jelly was served promptly. Setting aside the sense of oppression, the sweet red bean jelly had a firm texture with a good chewiness from the agar, and the beans were cooked just right, not too soft. It had the rumored glistening like black pearls. The sweetness of the black syrup was mild and refreshing. Well, preferences for the shop and taste may vary from person to person. It seems to have many repeat customers, so I guess it's satisfying in its own way. For my own education, I think it was good to have visited. [Bill] Sweet red bean jelly @500 (tax included)
