I went to the popular sweets shop "Umemura," which is located an 8-minute walk from Asakusa Station and has also been selected as one of the top 100 traditional Japanese sweets shops. It is relatively calm despite being in a residential area behind Senso-ji Temple where tourists are crowded. The interior of the shop cannot be photographed, but there are counter seats and tatami mat seating available. I ordered the ⭐️ Anmitsu for 600 yen. Although takeout is available, I chose to dine in. It came with toppings such as mandarin oranges, beans, mochi, and cherries. The agar jelly had a nice chewy texture. Please note that this shop is closed on Sundays, and there are also days when only takeout orders are accepted, so be careful if you plan to dine in. However, even for takeout, there are long benches in front of the shop where you can enjoy your meal. Payment is cash only. By the way, Anmitsu refers to a dessert made of sweet azuki bean paste and agar jelly. It is one of the variations of mitsumame, which is a dessert consisting of various sweet beans and agar jelly. The main difference between Anmitsu and mitsumame is whether it contains sweet azuki bean paste or not.

I went to a sweets shop located about a 12-minute walk from Asakusa Station. ✨ Ordered: Mame Kantan (sweet red bean jelly) for 500 yen. The red bean jelly here was different from the usual kind, which can be chewy and have a strange aftertaste. The surface of the beans here was glossy, the texture was moist, and there was no unpleasant smell! I wonder if they use the same red kidney beans? Anyway, it was incredibly delicious. A must-try sweet representing Asakusa! It was delicious, thank you for the meal.

This summer is just so hot... In recent years, despite being careful, I've still managed to get heatstroke. But this year, I've just barely avoided it. The secret!? When walking and I spot a place that looks like it serves traditional shaved ice, I don't hesitate to go in and have some shaved ice! Seriously, this is the best way to cool down and reset from the inside out. Umemura is originally a shop known for "mamekan." So, mamekan, mitsumame, and anmitsu are the standard offerings. Anmitsu for ¥600, mitsumame for ¥500, mamekanten for ¥500, and other affordable menu items are available. The most expensive items are the apricot cream anmitsu for ¥850 and under ¥1000!! Shaved ice with strawberry or melon ranges from ¥550, with the most expensive being the Uji gold time ice for ¥750, which is quite reasonable. Just like my visit to the Tokiya shop in Shinjuku, this traditional shaved ice is alive and well. The strawberry shaved ice. When it arrives, you might think, "It's all white???" The shaved ice has syrup at the bottom ★ Gently crush it while eating. The top part has no flavor. But as it starts to cool down your body from the inside, by the time you reach the flavored area, you'll have cooled down a bit and be able to enjoy the taste. Inside the shop, it says, "To prevent trouble, filming of products other than what you ordered is prohibited." So, there are no interior photos. The raised seating area is currently used for storing belongings, and there are only 6 counter seats for eating in. Thank you for the meal.

I waited for about 10 minutes and ordered the Anzu Cream Mitsumame for 750 yen. The seating is limited, creating a calm atmosphere. You can enjoy the deep Asakusa vibe. It gives the impression of being a shop loved by locals. The beans in the mitsumame were really delicious. Next time I visit, I want to order the simple bean paste!

I tried this restaurant for the first time on a Saturday around 12:30 pm in the midst of the Bon festival. I thought it was a takeout-only place, but it seemed like they also offered dine-in, so I sat at the counter and ordered the "mamekanten" for 500 yen. It arrived with plenty of beans and paired well with hot tea. The combination of the sweet cold confection and hot tea was delightful! It was delicious. Thank you for the meal! I will definitely go again!

I had been wanting to visit this restaurant for quite some time, and finally went on a weekday around 3:50 PM. There was one customer before me and two customers getting takeout. I ordered the "Mame Kanten (500 yen)" that I had in mind. It was served in about 1 minute. The shiny black azuki beans reflected like a mirror. The texture was fluffy and soft to the point where you almost don't need to chew, feeling more like a paste. The perfect chewiness of the agar jelly combined with the mildly sweet black syrup was incredibly delicious. The unique texture and deliciousness are hard to describe as you don't see it often elsewhere. Highly recommended Japanese sweet! I would definitely love to visit again if I have the chance. Thank you for the meal! (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)

I came in the evening before and it was closed. When I went around 2 PM on Wednesday, it happened to be open. There were bicycles parked in front of the shop and zabuton cushions were hanging, creating a peaceful atmosphere. There are both counter seats and tatami seating. I was seated at the counter and ordered a strawberry milk shaved ice for ¥650. First, they served tea. After a short wait, the shaved ice arrived in a small, transparent bowl with about four to five times the amount of ice piled up. At first, there was no taste as all the flavor was at the bottom of the bowl. After eating the tasteless ice for a while, I finally reached the flavored part and enjoyed it while savoring the taste. There was a newspaper article in front of the counter, indicating that their sweet beans are famous. I should have tried the shaved ice with sweet beans! The shaved ice was average. It seemed like there were many locals around the time I visited, chatting and having a good time. Payment is cash only.

The restaurant doesn't seem to be open very often, with many days being only for takeout. In my case, I take the stance of buying when I happen to pass by and see it open. - Red Bean Jelly (¥500): Glossy red beans from Hokkaido, no leftover skins in your mouth. They must be skilled in cooking the beans. The agar made from Amakusa is delicious too, and the black syrup is not overly thick, but light. - Tokoroten (¥500): Be careful not to choke on the seaweed (^_^;) This is also delicious. I haven't eaten inside the restaurant for a while, but I also recommend the apricots, they are delicious! They do not provide ice packs for takeout, so it's better to bring your own ice packs and cooler bag if you plan to carry it around for a long time... However, considering the consecutive hot days, it might be tough for those coming from a distance to take it home.

I went to Asakusa to eat at a long-established dessert shop I heard about, but unfortunately, on that day, they only offered takeout. Still, it's better than being closed... I ordered the "Mamekanten" (500 yen) and my favorite "Tokoroten" (500 yen) that caught my interest in the menu. I took them back to my accommodation and first tried the "Mamekanten"! The shiny black beans were piled up, with beautiful milky white agar underneath! There was no ingredient list, so I'm not sure, but are these red kidney beans? They are completely different from the red kidney beans I know! The thin skin has a slight crunch, while the inside has a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture. I always thought beans had a rough texture, but these beans disappear as if melting! It's a completely new texture that I've never experienced before! The subtle saltiness, the flavor of the beans, the crunchy agar, and the mildly sweet black syrup sauce all combine to make it delicious! This might be truly unique?! I then tried the "Tokoroten". It was also a beautifully clear tokoroten like I've never seen before! It came with a packet of vinegar soy sauce and seaweed. I poured both sauces on it and enjoyed it. The fragrance of the seaweed was wonderfully delicious, but I accidentally inhaled the seaweed (laughs). Maybe I poured a bit too much! It was really delicious though. Next time, I definitely want to try the "Anmitsu" in the store! Thank you, Umemura♪

Work in the Asakusa area. It continued from yesterday, so it ended in the early afternoon. When I mentioned the shop I visited yesterday to my colleagues, they told me about a famous shop near the one I visited, so I decided to stop by before heading home. It's an old-fashioned traditional Japanese sweets shop. You can feel the history from the charming exterior with a good old downtown atmosphere. The shop was quite crowded, so I bought "mitsumame" and headed home. It had two types of sweet bean paste, beans, mandarin orange, cherry, black syrup, and kanten. The texture of the kanten and beans is good. The sweetness of the black syrup is just right, and the gummy texture and sweetness of the sweet bean paste are a nice accent. It's a refreshing and delicious mitsumame.

I had some business near Senso-ji Temple. After finishing my errands, I headed home early to continue my work. Since I was already out, I decided to stop by this shop that I've been curious about for a while. It's a long-established traditional sweet shop. The exterior exudes a sense of history, and the interior has a counter and raised seating areas. There were a few other customers inside. Although I could have eaten inside, I found out that they also offer takeout. I got the "mitsumame" to go. It had toppings like mandarin orange, beans, mochi, and cherries. The texture of the agar jelly was nice and crispy. The taste and texture of the beans were also good. Next time, I'll visit to try other sweets inside the shop.

When strolling around Asakusa, it's nice to take a break at this sweet shop. The shop is located one street north from Koto-dori. We visited on a weekend afternoon around 1:30 PM and were seated right away with no wait. We were prepared to wait in line, so it was a pleasant surprise. We ordered the "Apricot Cream Anmitsu" (750 yen). While sitting in the tatami room and waiting, the dessert arrived fairly quickly. It was refreshing to see my tired body, exhausted from walking in the heat, come back to life after indulging in the sweet treat. The sweet and sour flavor of the apricot was especially memorable. Although the Cream Anmitsu alone was delicious, the apricot added a huge accent, so I highly recommend trying it. From reading other reviews, it seems like many people enjoy the "Mamekan" here. As this is the birthplace of "Mamekan," I plan to try it next time I visit.

Despite being a famous restaurant, you can enter without waiting in line. There are 5 seats at the counter and 2 tables in the tatami room. The specialty dish "mamekan" that was depicted in a certain gourmet manga is outstanding. The taste is rich, yet not overpowering, which I think is wonderful.

I ordered the "Mame Kantan" for 500 yen. Today, they were open from 12:30 pm. The texture of the kanten in the "Mame Kantan" was just right. The kuromitsu wasn't too sweet, it had a very elegant sweetness. The beans were soft and very delicious.

I came to Asakusa on this day. I had some time, so I visited this shop that came up in my search for the first time. It's a traditional Japanese dessert shop where you can feel the atmosphere from the Showa era. The reviews were all about the amazing mitsumame, but I also wanted to try the anmitsu... you get it, right? I ordered both, and they were served on a tray. The anmitsu had a sweetness from the white sugar. The mochi had a nice chewy texture. The agar jelly had a good crunch. The cherries were maybe soaked in syrup? They had a nice texture. The red bean paste was smooth. The beans had a fantastic texture, this must be it... The mitsumame had a shiny black appearance, and it felt like it had an aura (Background music: Kana Nishino's "Watashitachi"). The beans were smaller than usual, with a softness that could be crushed by the tongue. The difference in texture between chewing and crushing was enjoyable. The skin had the perfect softness and was delicious, and the inside spread a delicious umami flavor smoothly. The black syrup had just the right sweetness and a good aftertaste. Overall, the impressive thing was the satisfying texture that never gets boring. The mitsumame was 500 yen, and the anmitsu was 600 yen, which was very reasonable. Next time I come to the back of Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, I definitely want to revisit. Thank you for the meal.

Cream Anmitsu: 3.5 Anko, ice cream, agar jelly, beans, cherries, mandarin oranges, green and pink mochi, black syrup. The canned cherries and mandarin oranges are quite sweet and firm. The agar jelly is easy to eat without much seaweed taste. The beans are small, soft, and not too starchy. The ice cream, fruits, and mochi feel like they're just there. I think the goodness of the restaurant lies in the beans and agar jelly, so the famous Anko is indeed the specialty.

Sweets Hyakumeiten TOKYO 69/100 is located on a quiet alley just 2 minutes from the main hall of Senso-ji Temple. Three groups were waiting in front of the shop just before the opening at 12:30, and were seated at the counter as soon as it opened. Orders were taken and served within 2 minutes, and the turnover was fast. Many customers were seen getting the Mitarashi Dango for takeout at 500 yen. They do not provide ice packs, so it's best to purchase before heading home. The interior has 2 tatami seats and 6 counter seats, and taking photos of ordered items is allowed to avoid causing trouble for other customers. The Anmitsu at 600 yen features black, round beans that are beautifully soft. They are likened to black pearls, which explains why many people are fans of these beans. The sweet red bean paste has a hint of saltiness that complements it well. The clear agar jelly is refreshing and has a good texture. Everything is brought together by the rich black syrup. The mochi, mandarin orange, and cherry provide a nice accent. The Anmitsu and the tea served together had a gentle aroma and warmth throughout. It was a top-notch restaurant that left a lasting impression with its reliable flavors and attention to detail. Thank you for the meal.

I don't often come to the Asakusa area, so I wanted to try a famous place with a traditional Asakusa feel. That's why I came to "Umemura." I didn't particularly have a craving for sweet red bean jelly. I wasn't especially fond of it. In fact, I hadn't been interested in Japanese sweets in general until recently, and I had never felt like eating simple sweet red bean jelly. But this is for my own education. I don't like smooth sweet bean paste or yokan, but I do like sweet bean mochi lately, and it seems that the famous Inokashira Gorou visited this shop. Moreover, this shop seems to be the birthplace of sweet red bean jelly, so I wanted to visit at least once. When something is said to be the "birthplace," I feel compelled to check it out. The opening time is 12:30. I entered right after opening. There were only me and a group of two women who arrived shortly after. There is a counter, and I was asked to sit at the far end, right next to the register. There was a notice saying that only ordered items could be photographed to prevent trouble, so I couldn't take photos inside the shop. Well, that's okay, but the interior of the shop is too outdated. Well, for better or worse, this may be one of the charms according to those who like it. The taste is certainly there, but in front of the counter, there was that notice and probably a vinyl sheet put up, likely due to the COVID-19 situation, creating a sense of oppression. I think the vinyl sheet is unavoidable, but is it necessary to stick the menu items directly onto it? Am I the only one who feels like it's ruining the atmosphere of this old-fashioned traditional sweet shop? If it were just a transparent vinyl sheet, I probably wouldn't have thought this way. Now, the sweet red bean jelly was served promptly. Setting aside the sense of oppression, the sweet red bean jelly had a firm texture with a good chewiness from the agar, and the beans were cooked just right, not too soft. It had the rumored glistening like black pearls. The sweetness of the black syrup was mild and refreshing. Well, preferences for the shop and taste may vary from person to person. It seems to have many repeat customers, so I guess it's satisfying in its own way. For my own education, I think it was good to have visited. [Bill] Sweet red bean jelly @500 (tax included)

It's been about 2-3 years since my last visit. I've been a fan of this beloved dessert shop for over 30 years. Back in the days of the previous owners, I used to dine in at the shop often, but for the past 20 years, it's mostly been takeout. This time, it was a really long time since I last purchased from them. When I got home and opened the lid, I was surprised by how small the sweet beans were! Wait, what is this... so tiny... like tapioca. What's going on? That was my initial impression. Well, maybe it's because it's hard to get various ingredients these days, or perhaps due to the rising cost of ingredients or some other reason, they've become smaller? But what's important is the taste, so I gave it a try. The softness of the sweet beans that the previous owners were particular about seemed to have been passed down, but when the beans are this small, the texture naturally changes. The firm, jelly-like texture of the agar was a bit softer than before, and most importantly, the flavor had changed. To be honest, it had a slight off-flavor. Of course, the sweet beans today that have changed might still be considered delicious at a decent level, and maybe they intentionally made changes for various reasons. It's tough for long-established and renowned shops to keep everything the same as before; changes over time, generational shifts, different ways of thinking, changes in the origin and quality of ingredients handled, etc., various reasons lead to gradual changes. However, even in such times, there are enduring flavors that convey the dedication and passion to make and share delicious food. Without a doubt, it was a top-notch shop in the era of the previous owners. The sweet beans were exquisite. Ah, it was delicious. I miss the time when I felt like going there again! It would be appreciated if the current owners could recall that dedication and passion.

On my first visit, I arrived at 12:30 and was the first customer. I quickly took a seat at the counter. I ordered the sweet red bean jelly for 500 yen, and it was served within 1-2 minutes. The beans finished with black honey were very delicious. They looked glossy and beautiful, and the taste was enhanced when eaten with agar jelly. It was a simple dessert, not too sweet, of a quality that made me feel like I could eat as much as I wanted. The hot green tea served as a service paired perfectly with it, making for a very satisfying experience. It was very delicious. Thank you for the meal! 🌟

I tried the cream mitarashi dango as a final dish at Umemura, the birthplace of sweet bean paste, which I was curious about, for a drink in Asakusa. The beans here were surprisingly delicious and exceeded my expectations. The mochi was also larger than usual, but the beans were just amazing, so I will try the sweet bean paste next time. As expected, Asakusa still has many different long-established shops.
