While walking and looking at the map, I was surprised to find this place! I passed by once before. There are small tables at the back of the narrow counter. Although there is no line, customers are constantly coming in and out. The lady at the shop was busy, and I accidentally spilled tea while waiting, but she kindly watched over me. It must be hectic for her. After waiting for about 10 minutes, I received my order. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal! I'm curious about the 6th Avenue location, so I think I'll go check it out!

I revisited the eel specialty restaurant, Hyoutan-ya 1-chome branch. I was able to enter without waiting in line. I had the following dish: - Eel Rice Bowl (Regular) 3,000 yen The difference between regular, medium, large, and extra-large is the size of the eel. The eel is grilled using the Kanto-style method, resulting in a crispy skin and tender flesh. The light sauce enhances the flavor, making it easy to eat even when not very hungry. Although the prices increased the day before my visit, it is still a reasonable price to enjoy delicious eel. It was delicious. At lunchtime, they also offer the smallest size of eel, so even if you go alone, you can feel comfortable with the portion size. The eel rice bowl arrived in just 8 minutes after ordering! I thought the eel was small, but it was just right. The size of the rice bowl was small and cute, half the amount of rice was perfect. The chef was constantly grilling, and they sold out before the last order! The sauce was subtly flavored. I like the type of grilled eel that is not steamed. I think I can just order the kabayaki next time! The restaurant is small, and the female staff provided friendly service!

Tonight's culinary violence was enjoyed at the eel restaurant "Hyotanya 1st Avenue" in Ginza, where I savored their grilled eel and eel rice bowl. Absolutely delicious!! The eel was grilled to a crisp perfection in the Kansai style. This restaurant is always packed with customers due to its immense popularity. Personally, I think it's tastier than the long-established eel restaurants in Ginza. (Posted on March 26, 2015)

I visited the "Hyoutanya 1-chome" located a 1-minute walk from Ginza-itchome Station Exit 10, after hearing rumors about its delicious food. The menu only offers eel rice bowls, which makes it simple and easy to understand. If you want to try eel liver or other parts, you can go to another eel restaurant. This place is great for enjoying a quick eel rice bowl. I ordered the lunch special for 2,500 yen, which was served in about 10 minutes. It was a small portion for the price, but suitable for lunch. The eel was cooked just right, not too crispy but with a nice texture, and the sauce had soaked into it well. As a person from Osaka, I prefer the Kansai-style eel, and this place did not disappoint. I was happy to enjoy a quick eel rice bowl for 2,500 yen at lunch. Thank you for the meal♪

I heard rumors about this place being Kansai-style, so I decided to check it out. I arrived right after opening on a weekday at 11:04 and saw the chef working hard at the counter. I hesitated to enter, but a female staff member welcomed me and showed me to my seat. I ordered the medium set for 3000 yen. The restaurant was quite smoky due to the grilling, but the food arrived quickly. The appearance looked appetizing, but the taste was just average. The meat was tough and the sauce was too sharp with not enough sweetness. I was expecting a sweeter and more flavorful Kansai-style dish. The rice portion was generous, but the pickled radish lacked flavor. Overall, it was a bit disappointing.

Hyotanya @ Ginza Ichome, I found out that there is a restaurant in Ginza Ichome where you can eat eel with a special Kansai-style eel rice bowl. It was my first visit and the entrance was quite understated. When I entered, I was guided to the counter. The owner took out the eel that had already been skewered from the refrigerator and grilled it over charcoal right in front of the counter. You can see the grilling process up close, so there is a live feeling to it. It took about 10 minutes from ordering, which is quite fast for an eel restaurant. The grilling time was short, but the eel was well-grilled and had a fragrant and not overly sweet taste of the sauce, which I liked.

When I feel like eating eel, I always choose Hyotan-ya! Ever since I started coming here, I can't eat eel anywhere else. I love the quality of the eel, the charcoal grilling, the firmness of the rice, and the balanced spicy sauce. It's simple but outstanding. It was really delicious.

Today, I decided to visit one of the top 100 eel restaurants in Tokyo in the morning. I called a few places to confirm their opening hours. I found out that the Hyotan-ya Ichichome store in Ginza opens at 11am. When I arrived at the store, there was no line and I was able to enter right away. I placed my order and in about 15 minutes, the Hitsumabushi (eel over rice) was served in front of me. It was very delicious eel.

I visited during the daytime on a regular day. I arrived around 12:20 pm and there were empty seats at the back table. I ordered the lunch special "Unagi-don Regular (2,500 yen)" which came with a side dish and soup. It arrived in about 10 minutes. Let's dig in. I immediately tried the eel with my chopsticks. It has a fragrant aroma. The sauce has a strong soy sauce flavor and is refreshing to eat. I believe this is the Kansai style without steaming. It's more about the juicy and fragrant taste rather than a fluffy texture. It's good in its own way. The rice is not so much firm but rather feels like it has reduced moisture and has a slightly dry texture. As someone who likes firm rice, I found it a bit too tough. Enjoying Kansai-style eel in Ginza at this price for lunch is satisfying. I've been into eel lately. Thank you for the meal.

Around 1:20 PM, I was welcomed into the restaurant where I could see the grilling station clearly from the counter. The interior was empty except for one customer. I decided to order the medium size meal priced at 3000 yen, even though I thought it was a bit expensive for lunch. The fan on the table helped me feel comfortable. The eel was grilled directly, with the skin side having a decent amount of char but not quite reaching a crispy texture, more like a soft Kansai-style eel. The texture on the flesh side was bouncy and firm, with a good amount of chewiness. Considering the portion of eel provided, the cost performance was quite good. The taste might vary depending on personal preference. The sauce was on the sweeter side, but it paired well with the rice. Personally, I would recommend the 6th Avenue. Thank you for the meal.

It's been quite a while since my last visit. Since it was a weekday lunchtime, there were no other customers besides us at the opening. The special eel dish was a bit too much for me, so I ordered the regular one (3,600 yen). You can see them grilling the eel right in front of you at the counter. When I tasted the eel dish, the flesh was fluffy and the skin was crispy. As always, it was delicious. The softness of the flesh, the fragrant sauce, and the perfectly cooked rice. I've always thought this is the best eel I've ever had in my life. However, the pickles were just okay. Later, a few salarymen came in, but having eel for lunch on a weekday is quite luxurious, isn't it? Truly the salarymen of Ginza.

I went to this restaurant with the intention of ordering their lunch special (regular size) because I can only go during lunchtime. I had also bookmarked the nearby Kurume ramen shop, but haven't had the chance to visit yet. The exterior of the restaurant was very inconspicuous. Upon entering, I found a long and narrow interior layout, resembling a sleeping place for eels. I sat next to the owner at the counter seat near the entrance. I ordered the eel rice bowl (regular size) for ¥2500 (tax included) and it was served in about 5 minutes. The eel pieces were compact, so about 1/3 of the rice in the bowl was visible. The eel was grilled to perfection, with a firm and bouncy texture, likely due to the short grilling time. It was my first time trying Kansai-style eel without steaming, so it was a pleasant surprise. The sauce seemed to be lightly seasoned, perhaps only marinated once, which left me wanting more flavor. I usually like to pour plenty of sauce over my rice, but there was only shichimi and sansho pepper at the counter seat, so I had to give up on that idea. The pickled radish already had soy sauce on it for some reason, even though the pickles were already salty enough on their own. The miso soup had trefoil and seaweed, but the amount of seaweed was quite minimal, and I wished they were more generous with it. A couple of things to note: they only accept cash for payment, and the counter seats are prone to charcoal dust flying around from the grilling area, so it's better to sit on the side with a transparent partition or in the back of the restaurant.

A friend recommended this place to me, and I tried to visit a few times but it was either closed or outside of their business hours. Finally, I stopped by on my way back from exploring Ginza and Yurakucho. They have table seating in the back. The pickles were more memorable than the eel dish.

"The superb eel with soy sauce glaze grilled on charcoal. Sometimes you crave the eel from the hyoutan-ya. The Kansai-style dish involves grilling the eel slowly over charcoal without steaming it, resulting in a firm texture with a delicious soy-based sauce that isn't too sweet. The unpretentious atmosphere of this local eel restaurant is also great."

A long-established store in Ginza that has been around for nearly 60 years... Their eel rice bowl is prepared in a Kansai-style grilling method without steaming. The slightly spicy sauce, which is not too sweet, complements the eel well and makes the rice go down smoothly. Rating: B Class Eel Rice Bowl (top quality) 4,300 yen This is a renowned restaurant where you can enjoy Kansai-style eel rice bowl! The difference from the eel I usually eat was noticeable from the very first bite! The eel was thick and had a chewy texture, very delicious. I'm not sure if the seasoning of the eel sauce differs between Kanto and Kansai, but I really liked the flavor. The lady staff (possibly the proprietress) was cheerful and provided excellent service.

I arrived around 11:30 on a regular day. There were about 2-3 groups of customers in the store. I had the eel rice bowl for 3600 yen. They only accept cash. The eel was quite large and looked visually appealing. It was easy to eat without any strong flavors. I would have been happy if they could have added a little bit of liver to the soup.

For more details, please visit the blog: https://tokyo-tabearuki.com/hyotanya-ginza1 1. What is Ginza Hyotanya? Ginza's eel restaurant "Hyotanya" is a long-established store founded in 1946, shortly after the end of the war when Japan was probably the country with the least resources. There are two stores in Ginza, "Hyotanya Ichome Store" and "Hyotanya Rokucho Store." Both stores have a rating of 3.76 on Tabelog (as of September 1, 2021). The "Hyotanya Ichome Store" was selected as one of the Tabelog Top 100 in 2018. I was interested in "Hyotanya" because I heard they serve Kansai-style eel. Kansai-style eel is different from Kanto-style eel in that it is baked without steaming. I had only eaten Nagoya-style eel at "Unagi Shidaimokiku" Musubu Tamachi Store this year, so I was curious about other styles of eel. The eel was surprisingly delicious and had a different texture compared to what I was used to. 2. Exterior, Menu, and Atmosphere of Hyotanya Ginza Ichome Store From Yurakucho Station, walk towards Ginza Ichome. The store front of "Hyotanya" is not very eye-catching, with a sign that looks aged. The menu is simple, mainly focusing on eel dishes. Inside the restaurant, there is a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with a veteran female staff member greeting customers. I chose the special eel dish that featured three pieces of eel lined up, as it looked appealing. The menu also includes a variety of drinks. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing, with condiments like sansho pepper and shichimi available on the table. 3. Eel Dish at Hyotanya Ginza Ichome Store The special eel dish arrived with three pieces of eel lined up. The width of the dish was smaller than expected, but it still had a substantial presence. The miso soup served was not liver soup, which was a bit disappointing, but it had a great taste. The eel had a slight saltiness at first, followed by its unique texture. The sauce complemented the eel well, resulting in a delicious and enjoyable meal.

A long-established eel restaurant in Ginza. It has a small entrance and a historic feel inside. The clientele is mostly elderly. When you sit down, you are automatically served tea and pickles. The menu includes an eel bowl for 1,850 yen. Eel dishes are priced higher. It is relatively reasonable for the location in Ginza. It's interesting to see the eel being grilled in front of the counter seats. Each eel is carefully grilled after receiving the order, so it takes some time. I waited for about 15 minutes. The eel in the eel bowl is not very voluminous. It's small. The sauce is well-coated, and the rice has a good flavor. This balance is good. The eel has a nice contrast between the firm texture and the crispy surface. It has a good amount of fat and a nice aroma. Indeed, it's a well-balanced eel. Although it may be slightly lacking in volume, considering the price range, it's still a good deal. With eel prices continuing to rise, its rarity value may increase even more. I couldn't help but feel a dark future in the historic interior of the restaurant.
