When you enter the road next to the Hermes building at Sukiyabashi (called SONY Street), you will see several Kumamoto-related restaurants and bars. Kojimaya is located on the 2nd floor of the building, so make sure to check the ground-level sign so you don't miss it. It's a very cozy adult izakaya-style place that I have visited at least four times. I come here when I want to eat delicious horse meat in a moderate amount, not too heavy, or when I want to have dinner with my meat-loving friends. My go-to order is a beer or highball with the ¥5500 course. The course includes appetizers, horse sashimi, homemade spicy lotus root, hormone simmered in consomme, assorted horse meat grill, rice or cherry blossom udon, and homemade sweet potato dumplings. Of course, everything from the motsu (offal) to the udon broth is made with horse meat. The restaurant and the food overall have something different from regular horse meat places, and upon research, I found out that the manager, who is originally from Kumamoto, had 18 years of experience in Western-style restaurants. That explains the stylish vibe of the place. The horse sashimi here is sweet, tender, and without a strong horse-like smell, making it easy and enjoyable to eat. The transparent sauce, based on Amakusa's natural salt, pairs well with the horse meat, preserving its natural sweetness. The spicy lotus root is also delicious, and even though I haven't had it in its hometown, I thought, "Is this what it tastes like there?" The cherry blossom udon for the finish has a tasty broth, and the thin noodles are just right. The dessert of sweet potato dumplings is a delightful surprise. I'm starting to feel like visiting again soon (laughs).
