I arrived at Ueno Station in the afternoon without having had lunch, so I decided to visit this place in search of eel that I missed out on eating on the midsummer day of the Ox. I had heard about this restaurant before and thought that if the eel was delicious at this price, I would definitely come back. As I entered, I could see the eel being grilled over charcoal, which got me excited as I was shown to my seat. I chose the double eel bowl set with liver and salad. The food arrived relatively quickly, and I sprinkled some sansho pepper on top. In conclusion, it was "reasonable for the price" (this is just my personal evaluation). The aroma of the charcoal was nice, but the quality of the eel itself was more like "really good eel from a convenience store" level, and it didn't quite reach the level of eel grilled over charcoal at a restaurant. Of course, considering the price, it was at an acceptable level, and I don't intend to write overly critical comments. However, after reading various reviews and having certain expectations, the difference between my expectations and reality was quite significant, so I would rate it as "neither good nor bad" with 3 points. As a reference (although it may not be helpful), my personal preference is for the eel bowl at UnaMasu in Kanda (1,500 yen), which I would rate as a 4 for the balance of price and taste.

I went to a reasonably priced eel restaurant located under the Ameyoko overpass, about a 2-minute walk from Ueno Station. This restaurant is part of a chain of cheap eel restaurants with several locations in Tokyo, where you can enjoy a fast food-style meal. I liked that you can freely refill the barley tea. This time, I ordered the double eel bowl for 1,100 yen with extra large size. The double eel bowl had well-grilled eel that was fragrant and fluffy, with thick skin that was a bit chewy, but when you add the sauce provided on the table, it becomes just right and delicious. I think the eel is imported, but being able to eat it for 500-1,000 yen is great. You can easily dine alone, so I would like to revisit when I come back to Ueno.

A friend often goes to this restaurant, so I had been thinking of going someday. It was already past 9:30, so there were few customers and I was able to enter smoothly. Although there was a double portion of eel bowl available, I scolded myself thinking that it was not the amount a middle-aged man should eat at this time, so I chose the eel rice bowl. While waiting for the eel rice bowl, I enjoyed a draft beer and some appetizers. Surprisingly, the eel rice bowl arrived in less than 10 minutes. The grilled eel was worth the price, and I thought the rice was cooked well. I added some sansho pepper and enjoyed the eel liver. It was a delicious meal.

Sansho pepper is a must-have, right? This time, the dishes I bought are here! Ta-da! It's an eel bowl!! Wow! Looks delicious! When I opened the lid of the container, a fragrant charcoal smell filled the air! It's a very appetizing smell! The eel is grilled very well. Let's dig in. I took a bite and... Delicious! The eel's fat is so rich! The skin is grilled well, so there is no flabbiness like you find in supermarket eel. The sauce is evenly spread, so there is no variation in taste no matter where you eat. The rice is perfectly cooked. However, when the firm rice and the eel fat blend together, the rice becomes nice and fluffy. Is it the same principle as fried rice? When you chew the eel and rice in your mouth, the rice becomes very fluffy. It was so delicious that I was surprised, but what surprised me more was the price. It's only 590 yen!!! The cost performance is amazing. I have seen about 30 foreign tourists lining up during lunchtime. This taste at this price is truly amazing. Next time, I want to try the "Hitsumabushi" for takeout! I lined up at this popular restaurant in Ueno. Everyone in line seemed to be foreigners. The draft beer is cheap and delicious. I tried the "Kurikara" which turned out to be white grilled rolls. I ordered 2 rolls to try and they were delicious, so I ordered a set of 5 rolls. The normal rolls were the best. The eel was tough and the sauce was so-so, so it's better to order a variety of side dishes at this izakaya.

The price of eel, unagi-don, has become very expensive, so this price is appreciated. It was surprising to see foreigners cooking it, but the customers were mostly foreigners too. I think it's better to eat eel at this restaurant than buying it at the supermarket to eat at home. Thank you for the meal.

In the midst of that, the regular release of Unagi no Una and the start of the Gigamashi Plus at Uname, so I went to the Ueno store for the final meal of the day. When I was a child, eel wasn't that expensive, but now it has become quite luxurious and is not easily affordable for the common people, so I always rely on Unagi Giga. When I was working for a foreign company, my French boss loved eel and we often had it for lunch at a nearby teahouse, but looking back now, it was a high-end restaurant. At that time, it was steamed too much and was soft, so I didn't think it was that delicious and ate it. By the way, that Unagi Giga is a bowl of rice with eel cut into pieces on top, unlike Unadon or Unaju. The Gig is four times the normal Unameshi at 1200 yen, with four times the amount of eel that is normally on Unameshi for 550 yen. However, even though it is four times the amount, the amount of eel that is originally on Unameshi is not that much, so the eel does not become a huge amount like in a Japanese folktale. By the way, the unit Gig refers to 10 billion times the basic amount, so it's a bit exaggerated. While thinking about this, I ordered a Hoppy Black set for 400 yen including tax. It's a bit more generous than the Uname Shinjuku store. By the way, there is no large or small, but the self-proclaimed medium glass of draft beer is 330 yen and cheap, but the slim glass looks skinny and malnourished, so I'm not interested. There is Shibazuke in front of me, but there is no small plate, so I drink Hoppy while waiting. After a few minutes, the dish arrives. Sansho pepper is certainly expensive, but instead of doing this, it would be better to attach small bags of sansho pepper like at a gyudon restaurant. So I eat while sprinkling shichimi. This way is tastier. The large serving of rice, Shibazuke, and red miso soup I received from adding a friend on LINE are all used and I finish eating. I complained about various things, but I think I will eat it again next time. It was such a night. * There is a slope at the entrance, but the aisle is narrow, making it difficult for wheelchair users to enter the store. * The distance between the counter seats is normal and the chairs are movable, so it is okay for left-handed people. * Children are also allowed.

It's been 3 and a half years since my last visit. I ordered the eel rice bowl for 960 yen and a draft beer for 330 yen, while my friend ordered the "surprise" eel bowl for 2,500 yen and a mega lemon sour for 580 yen. We also ordered miso soup and red miso soup. The drinks were served promptly, but we had to wait a bit for the eel dishes. The "surprise" eel bowl arrived first, with a huge whole eel on top, making for an impressive presentation. About 5 minutes later, my eel rice bowl arrived. It was imported eel, but it was tender and well-cooked, with a nice crispy skin. Despite the price increase, getting a satisfying eel dish for around 1,000 yen is still appreciated.

Near Ueno Station, there is a guard underpass where there are two types of restaurants: one specializes in rice bowl dishes and the other is a place where you can drink. There was a long line of more than 10 foreigners. The taste is decent for the price. It's sufficient for casual dining. But the line... If there's no line, it's worth a visit.

Yesterday's lunch was at "Unatoto" (Ueno branch). They were having a limited-time campaign, so I decided to take advantage of it. It was my first visit. I arrived at the restaurant right at the opening time of 11:00 am...even then, there was a line forming probably due to the ongoing campaign, and I waited for a little over 5 minutes. I was seated on the second floor and ordered the campaign special "Giga Mori" set with pickles and liver sashimi. The pickles arrived in about 3 minutes, followed by the rice bowl in another 3 minutes, and then the liver sashimi. It was a regular unagi bowl, nothing extraordinary. The pickles were delicious. The liver sashimi was a bit disappointing. However, when I left the restaurant, there was a long line forming in front of the restaurant. I was able to pay with a credit card.

Unadon with extra large portion (+1100) and free upgrade to extra large rice! Usually the eel is tripled in size, but this year it's quadrupled! Wow, has Unatoto's eel gotten even more delicious? I remember a few years ago it had a muddy smell and wasn't that great, but now it's delicious! The eel is fatty and tender, with no muddy smell and the skin is soft. The shredded seaweed between the rice and eel is a nice touch. The extra large rice portion is quite filling, but there's plenty of eel so no rice is left over, which is great. I've been craving eel lately and this really hit the spot. I'll definitely be back during this promotion period!

I came back again to the famous Unatoto restaurant. I really wanted to order the double portion, but ended up getting the regular eel bowl with red miso soup because I had a discount coupon from last time. The medium-sized draft beer for 330 yen was a great deal, and the eel pickles at this eel restaurant were delicious. I added a lot of them. The total came to 920 yen for the eel bowl (590 yen), red miso soup (0 yen), and draft beer (330 yen), which was a great value. I will definitely visit again, and next time I'll go for the double portion!

I went to try the limited-time menu "Unadon Giga Plus" at Unatoto, which is available from 9/5 to 9/19! This year, it's not just triple the size, but quadruple (*´∀`*) I headed to the "Unatoto Ueno" store. I thought I might have to give up if it was crowded, but when I arrived, there was a line out the door and a delicious smell wafting out. I would have been disappointed if I couldn't eat, so I decided to give it a try. Upon entering, I was asked to sanitize my hands with alcohol. The seating was spaced out, and there were counter and table seats available. I ordered the Unadon Giga Plus (for 1100 yen) and requested extra rice for free. I also added a free red miso soup coupon by adding the LINE friend. The Unadon Giga Plus arrived without much wait. The bowl was smaller than I expected, but the volume of eel was quite generous, finely chopped instead of being a whole piece or half. The eel was tender and flavorful, with plenty of finely chopped seaweed on top. Overall, it was a good deal for 1100 yen. Some pieces had bones or a muddy taste, but most of it was delicious. The sauce was also tasty. I added some extra sauce from the table. I sprinkled some sansho pepper towards the end and enjoyed every bite. I would love to have it again before the limited-time offer ends. Payment can be made in cash or various credit cards, transportation IC cards, QUICPay, but not through QR code.

Visited Suntory The Premium Malt's in August 2022. Ordered three medium glasses of beer, three Clam Karashi, two Eel Liver with Sansho Pepper, and one Mini Nanbanzuke for a total of 1,890 yen. Stopped by after work in Ueno. The usual place is nice, but since it's summer, decided to have a drink with eel (though definitely can't afford grilled eel!). Arrived before 7 pm. The restaurant was about half full. Sat at a small table by the counter. The two people next to me were talking loudly about work, which was a bit annoying, so I planned to leave early. Ordered the beer, which was a good deal at 300 yen, and two Clam Karashi. The waitress was a foreign girl. I'm not a fan of Malt's, but the lack of overpowering aroma made it enjoyable. The Clam Karashi was lean, lacking in fat but had a bit of umami, and the sauce was a bit lacking, so I added some special sauce from the table. However, it was still lacking in fat. I wish I could go to my favorite eel restaurant in Aomono Yokocho, where you can get skewers for 350 yen each. They've become a famous restaurant now! Congratulations. The Eel Liver with Sansho Pepper arrived steaming hot, with about 5 grains of Sansho pepper. It was a bit fishy, so I added more Sansho pepper. It was okay, with a hint of bitterness. Lastly, when ordering another beer, I added the Mini Nanbanzuke for 150 yen. It was tiny, with 3 small pieces of eel. It was a good deal for the price, but the eel was overpowered by the ponzu sauce. Overall, it was hard to evaluate this restaurant. It has been around for a long time, and if you want to eat affordable eel dishes, it might be a good choice. They also had cute paper fans with the character "Toto-chan" at the entrance. I took one because it was cute, even though it can't beat Urawa Unakochan!

It was the day of the Ox, so the restaurant was crowded with staff. I arrived in the morning before the rush and had a reasonably priced eel bowl. Eel bowls are perfect for hot summer days! It was delicious. They also have a great selection of drinks, so I will definitely come back even on days that are not the day of the Ox. It seems that from 7/20 to 7/25, you can only choose from limited menu items.

I used the transfer at Ueno Station for lunch. I originally planned to have tonkatsu, but ended up having a last-minute meeting at work, so I decided to go for a quick and filling meal nearby. It was around 12:30pm and the first floor was full, so I was seated at a table on the second floor. As soon as I sat down, I ordered the Una-don Double for 1100 yen. I presented a free miso soup ticket and got a red miso soup. Although the large portion was free, I declined as I've been concerned about my stomach lately. The Una-don arrived after a few minutes of waiting. The eel was so big that I couldn't see the rice underneath. Well, for this price, it's quite good. I sprinkled some sansho pepper and started eating. The sansho pepper didn't have much flavor as usual. I wonder if the slight fishy smell of the eel was because of the sansho pepper? The eel was not steamed to be fluffy, but rather grilled to be firm and thick, with a good bounce and a nice smoky flavor, which I liked. The rice was slightly firm, which I personally prefer, but the sauce seemed a bit lacking. When I added some of the eel sauce from the table, it improved significantly. I was already full even without getting the large portion. Now that I've stored up some energy, I feel like I can get through the afternoon lecture. Thank you for the meal.
