Located in a quiet alley in Higashi-Ginza, "Ginza Nakaji" is a cozy Japanese cuisine restaurant that I visited for lunch. It is about a 4-minute walk from Higashi-Ginza Station, right near the popular ramen shop "Ginza Hachigo". As you enter, you will see a simple white curtain hanging at the entrance. Climbing a slightly steep staircase and passing through the curtain on the second floor, you will find a counter right in front of you. The cozy space has a counter with 7 seats and one table, with soft jazz playing in the background and the sound of frying food filling the air.
For lunch, the menu includes:
- Salmon, ikura, and sea urchin steamed in a basket: 1,800 yen (limited to 10 servings)
- Seafood fry: 1,600 yen (includes large shrimp, horse mackerel, and flying fish)
- Tempura bowl: 1,600 yen (includes large conger eel, shrimp, and kohada)
- Daily special set menu: 1,500 yen (choose 2 items from options like crab cream croquette, bonito tataki, large shrimp fry, and dried red sea bream)
I opted for the seafood fry, which included a large shrimp, horse mackerel, and flying fish. Each set was prepared individually and served in just 10 minutes. The main seafood fry had a beautiful golden color with a crispy texture that indicated it was freshly fried. It was served with rice, miso soup, salad, and spicy cod roe as a side dish. The first bite of the flying fish fry exceeded my expectations, with each piece of batter being crispy and the sweet flesh inside standing out. The large shrimp was so big that it took 5-6 bites to finish, and it was equally delicious with a crispy batter and juicy, flavorful meat. The horse mackerel was tender and flavorful, and I savored each bite. The set also came with tartar sauce mixed with pickled radish to add extra flavor.
The meal was served with Echizen Oono rice, which was chewy and had a glossy texture, enhancing the flavors of the fried food. Despite my initial concern about having enough rice, I was satisfied by the end of the meal. The restaurant operates with just one staff member, so it's best to be prepared for a short wait during peak lunch hours. With a maximum of 11 seats, it's recommended to visit early. I was curious about the limited steamed basket dish, but the seafood fry was too tempting to pass up. Other customers seemed to enjoy the daily special set menu with two items of their choice.
Overall, the seafood fry at "Ginza Nakaji" exceeded my expectations with its crispy batter and delicious flavors, making it a perfect choice for a day when you're craving fried food.
