Since its completion in 2012, this eel specialty shop from Lake Hamana has been in operation. When I visited this summer, I noticed that they had expanded quite a bit (11 stores nationwide, including overseas, but I won't list them here). Ever since the old Tokyu Plaza's "Matukawa" with its charcoal grill closed down (come to think of it, I still haven't been to the new store), I've only been coming here. The eel here is always piping hot and delicious. The Hamamatsu-style eel, steamed shallowly, is full of fat and has a texture almost close to the Kanto-style, which is soft and tender. The sauce is just right, not overpowering the flavor of the eel, with a refined elegance. The specialty is the "O-hitsu Unagi Chazuke Set" (from 2,915 yen to 5,720 yen). It's the famous hitsumabushi, where you first eat the eel over rice as-is, then add condiments, and finally have it with tea poured over, you know. Occasionally, enjoying eel this way is fun, but speaking from a drinker's personal perspective, I think just having it as regular grilled eel is the best. The eel bowl ranges from 2,695 yen to 5,500 yen. However, during the state of emergency, it was a bit dull as they were not serving alcohol. I'm looking forward to the day when I can have another round with liver, skewers, sashimi, and stewed eel. What bothers me is that the male staff in the hall always seem uninterested in their work.
