Founded in the 9th year of the Meiji era, the sweet potato wholesaler "Kawasho Shoten" operates a sweet potato confectionery specialty store. In Asakusa, there are many shops that specialize in "sweet potato" sweets, and among them, Chiba-ya and Koshin are famous for their sweet potato with sweet bean paste. I have loved sweet potato with sweet bean paste since I was a child and used to buy it often from the deli section, but when I first tried Chiba-ya's sweet potato with sweet bean paste, I was shocked by its deliciousness. So, this time, I decided to do a taste comparison. I purchased Azuma (Koyoshi/250g 700 yen including tax). Types of sweet potatoes: On this day, there were two types, "Miyabi" and "Azuma" (Chiba-ya does not disclose the variety and it may change depending on the season). Shape: Sliced into rounds. The edges are trimmed. The shapes and sizes are consistent (Chiba-ya also slices into rounds, but the shapes and sizes are inconsistent). Sweetness: The sweetness is moderate and has an elegant taste. They generously coat it with sweet bean paste (Chiba-ya has a stronger soy sauce flavor). Founded: 9th year of Meiji (1876). (Chiba-ya was founded in 1950). Branches: 14 stores (Chiba-ya has only 1 store). Compared to Chiba-ya, Koshin's sweet potatoes are uniform in size and neatly trimmed (impressive that they individually trim each one), making them easy to eat. The sweet bean paste is not too strong in soy sauce flavor, with an elegant sweetness and a glossy appearance. I appreciate the additional sweet bean paste they provide after putting it in the bag (extra coating). Both are delicious, but overall, Koshin is elegant and modern, while Chiba-ya is robust and traditional. Koshin also offers boxed packaging services, making it ideal for gifts or souvenirs. On this day, there were two business men in suits who bought a large quantity, perhaps to bring to their business partners. When I asked my mother, who loves sweet potatoes, which she preferred, she said she liked Koshin better. She especially enjoyed the sweet bean paste and licked it all up with a spoon until the very end (laughs). It was so delicious... Located on Orange Street. A 5-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Ginza Line and Asakusa Line, and a 4-minute walk from Tsukuba EXP Asakusa Station. It is within walking distance of about 4 minutes from Kaminarimon. Next door is Mangan-do, famous for sweet potato sweets.
