There is a curry restaurant that opened in Gotanda without me realizing it. I heard that the comedian Shamoji Tanii is serving spice curry for lunch, so I came to try it. In the evening, they operate a members-only "Sayonara Seishun no BAR" where the comedy duo Sayonara Seishun no Hikari performs. The interior of the bar exudes nostalgia. It's a cozy place with about 5 counter seats and 4 table seats, and it was empty when I visited, giving it a private atmosphere. The menu consists of 2 types of curry and 3 types of combination curry. Each can be topped with deluxe toppings, giving you 6 choices to choose from. The curries are Caligari Makioka Curry and Caligari Super Spicy Makioka Curry. The deluxe toppings include achar, boiled egg, lettuce, and coconut sambal. The menu is posted on the entrance wall, and it seems to be a pay-first system. Surprisingly, Tanii himself kindly explains the curry options. I was recommended the combination curry with deluxe toppings, so I ordered it for ¥1200. I opted for extra rice for free. Since it's a good deal, I also added a Shikuwasa Lassi drink for ¥200. It was my first time, but I knew this was going to be delicious. I sat at the counter, prepared my own water, and before I knew it, the curry was ready in less than 3 minutes. The combination curry looked appetizing and smelled delicious. I started with the Makioka Curry. Wow! This is tasty! It has a coconut base with a spicy kick, on par with specialty spice curry shops. Spice curry has been trending lately, so I'm happy to be able to eat it more often, and this one is quite to my liking. Next, I tried the Super Spicy version. Oh, I see. This one has an even stronger spicy kick and a rich flavor. If I had to choose, I prefer this one. To differentiate it from the Makioka Curry, adding a bit more coconut flavor to the Makioka Curry would make it even better. Oh, the Shikuwasa Lassi. It's not as sour as I expected. It's different, not what I imagined. It has a refreshing taste, but it's a bit off from what I had in mind. I was surprised by how authentic the curry was, considering it's a comedian's restaurant. The prices for spice curry are reasonable, and I will definitely come back for more.
