Three generations have passed since the founding of the eel restaurant on Mitsume Street, which has been loved for its unchanged charm over the years. I finally had the chance to visit this historic establishment after being intrigued by it for some time. It was a rainy weekday, so I was able to enter without any hassle, but it quickly filled up with customers, showing its popularity. The place seems to be frequented mainly by local regulars. As soon as I stepped inside, I understood why it's so popular - the atmosphere is simply wonderful. The spacious and nostalgic interior, along with the friendly staff, made me feel right at home. Watching the regulars chatting happily with the staff made me feel warm inside. Reservations are only available on weekdays until 12:00. The menu is reasonably priced, and the grilled eel was quite popular. The eel dish varies in price based on the amount of eel. Today's eel was from Shizuoka Yoshida. I've always loved Yoshida eel, so I was thrilled to encounter it again after a long time. The eel is grilled using gas. I ordered the "Unaju" (grilled eel over rice) for 2300 yen, which came with liver sashimi, pickles, and a small side dish as part of the lunch set. It arrived in about 10 minutes. Since it's a popular spot, they seem to steam the eel continuously rather than all at once. The size was around 4 pieces, which is about 1/3 of a full eel. The sauce was light, and the surface of the eel was nicely grilled. The eel was not overly steamed, but rather soft and tender with a slightly crispy surface. The grilling was strong on the surface but gentle on the skin side. The gas grilling only brought out the aroma of the sauce. The eel was not overly fatty, providing a clean taste, but the umami from the eel was still present. The sauce was a bit sweet and savory, with a good balance of sweetness and depth. It complemented the eel well, adding richness without being overwhelming. The eel had a pleasant texture, not too soft, not too firm, and the skin was deliciously tender. The eel had a nice umami flavor, but lacked a bit in fragrance and aroma. The rice was well-cooked and not too sticky, with a decent flavor. Despite the smaller portion of eel, the generous amount of sauce made the rice very enjoyable. The liver sashimi had a rich broth but lacked the essential liver flavor. The two types of sansho pepper provided a nice fragrance. Overall, the eel was substantial and satisfying for the price. The friendly service and cozy atmosphere added to the overall experience, making the meal even more enjoyable. Restaurants that value their customers like this one are sure to last for a long time. They are currently running a PayPay campaign, so it's a good deal. Thank you for the delicious meal!
