At 2:00 pm on a weekend, I found a small sign in an alley near the main branch of Kinokuniya bookstore. I climbed a narrow and steep staircase, where two sets of customers were waiting in front of a door. The menu featured dishes like Beef Shank Curry (1,320 yen), Shrimp Curry (1,170 yen), Tomato and Cheese Curry (1,150 yen), and Mixed Curry (1,480 yen). I opted for the limited Beef Tendon Stew Curry (1,280 yen). The curry was quite spicy, but I enjoyed it. The decor included tapestries of Carole King and Billy Joel's "Innocent Man" LP jacket. According to Asahi Shimbun DIGITAL, the restaurant has been passed down from father to son since 1972, with a focus on both music and flavorful curry. By 2:30 pm, the line had finally disappeared, and I left feeling intrigued to revisit this charming European-style curry spot.

I arrived five minutes before the restaurant opened on a weekday and there were already five people lined up in front of me. The curry was served fairly quickly after opening, indicating that it is a well-organized place. At first, the curry had a strong sour taste rather than spiciness, but by the end, it had a nice kick of heat. The topping of frankfurter added a sweet touch which complemented the dish well. Overall, it was a satisfying experience at this European-style curry restaurant. I look forward to trying the beef shank curry next time.

The interior of the restaurant has a retro coffee shop vibe with a counter and booth seats. It was quiet on a weekday night with a few solo diners. It's easy to go alone and enjoy your meal. The Beef Tendon Curry for 1,280 yen seems to be the most popular dish. It's an old-fashioned European-style demi-glace curry. The taste was a bit lacking something. The curry sauce was plentiful, which was nice, but the rice was a bit insufficient, so getting a large portion might be a good idea. Towards the end of the meal, the spiciness started to kick in, and I broke a light sweat. It might feel spicy for those who prefer a sweeter Vermont style curry.

Yesterday's soup curry in Sapporo seemed to have inspired me, as I ended up having curry two days in a row. Today, I went to Gandhi in Shinjuku. The curry at this restaurant is European-style. I thought it would be like Japanese curry rice, which has developed uniquely in Japan as a national dish, but it was different. European curry is also like Japanese curry. It seems that the founder of a certain coffee shop learned a brown sauce base in a French restaurant during his stay in Europe and combined it with curry ingredients to create it. However, European curry has its own identity, with a mild curry that combines the sweetness of fruits and spiciness. When I arrived about 10 minutes after the opening, there were already about three people lined up outside the shop. However, this shop is on the second floor, and the three people in front of the shop were customers overflowing from the steep staircase leading to the second floor, so there were roughly about a dozen people in line. It's truly a thriving shop. The turnover is good, with customers changing every five minutes or so. During the wait on the stairs, which is quite humid due to this year's record-breaking heat, customers are given the menu in advance to order while waiting, which is laminated like a placemat and serves as a makeshift fan, which is helpful. I ordered the Beef Shank Curry for ¥1,320 and a bottle of beer for ¥650. When my turn came, I was seated by the window where I could see the street. First, a cold bottle of beer arrived, which revived me. The Beef Shank Curry looks like something you would get in a hotel. The difference is that there are chunks of beef in it. The beef is tender and you can taste the deliciousness of the beef. Then, a sharp spiciness kicks in. It's quite spicy. I take a few bites of curry and wash it down with beer. This combination is exquisite. After finishing the meal, I realize that it was quite a substantial portion. I step out into the scorching streets of Shinjuku 3-chome.

I visited a curry restaurant that I was interested in. The curry had a rich amount of spices, giving it a spicy curry flavor which was delicious. There were lots of beef fibers in it, indicating that it had been stewed for quite a while. It was on the spicy side, so those who are not fond of spicy food may not be able to eat a lot of it.

Around 11:40 on Sunday, there were about 10 people waiting in line. The store was on the second floor, and the line was formed on a steep staircase. Looking down was a bit scary. And it was hot. Below us, two men were talking loudly and happily, with one of them sweating a lot. "What would you do if your senior at work said 'Curry is cool' as a pun?" I have no idea! And why do they stand one step away from each other, but not on our side? As we waited in line, we were handed the menu and asked for our order. The turnover was fast, so we were able to enter the store around 12:00. The curry was a European-style curry. The large serving came with the curry already poured over the rice. The curry was a bit smooth, with a hint of bitterness and sweetness at first, followed by some spiciness. The spiciness wasn't too intense, so I found it easy to eat (although my wife thought it was spicy). The beef tendons were about the size of a bite, still retaining their shape and slightly gooey. The rice was quite firm, but not hard. By the way, my partner ordered the beef shank curry, which had the same curry but the meat was a bit dry. If I were to come back, I would probably order the beef tendons again. I vaguely remember being brought here by a friend during my student days, but I wasn't interested in eating out back then, so I don't remember the taste. Trying it again, I liked it, but it didn't have a strong addictive quality, so if I were to remember this place in the future, it might be because of that guy who was in line behind us.

A cozy little restaurant with 4 tables for 2 people and 6 counter seats by the window. Despite being in Shinjuku, you can enjoy authentic European-style curry here. Today, I had the shrimp curry, which had a nice balance of spiciness. My friend ordered the beef curry with cheese on top, and we wondered what effect the cheese would have on the spices. If you're craving simple yet authentic curry in Shinjuku, this is a recommended spot.

In the area near Isetan in Shinjuku Sanchome, there are two major curry restaurants: Gandhi and Ouroji. Ouroji is a pure tonkatsu restaurant, with their popular menu being katsu curry. On the other hand, despite its name, Gandhi serves European-style curry rather than Indian curry. Personally, I prefer Gandhi because of its generous portions and my preference for European-style curry. I arrived ten minutes before opening and there were no customers ahead of me. However, just before opening, more and more customers started lining up, and by the time they opened, almost all seats were taken. The restaurant is small, mainly consisting of a counter, making it easy for solo diners to use. I decided to try the beef shank curry, opting for the large size. The portion was impressive, as expected. Although the flavor was spicy, it lacked depth and richness. It was better than store-bought curry but didn't have the refined taste of other popular curry chains. Nevertheless, the portion size was satisfying. As shown in the photos, the large size came with a generous amount of rice covered in curry sauce, with an additional side of curry on top. Pouring the curry sauce generously over the rice was recommended. It was a curry flood. The satisfaction of being full was achieved with the curry sauce itself, not just the rice or naan. That's what I love about Gandhi. It's worth mentioning that the beef shank was also generously included in the dish. It was overflowing with beef shank. Thank you, Gandhi.

Famous curry restaurant in Shinjuku. Located right near Isetan and open all day, making it easy to visit. The staff are surprisingly young and they accept card payments. The curry had a unique tangy flavor that made it easy to eat, especially the beef shank curry with plenty of meat. The portion of rice was also generous. It was delicious, thank you for the meal.

Personally, due to a slight curry boom, I decided to have curry on this day. I was unsure where to go, but I was drawn to the bold name of Gandhi-san. As I climbed the stairs and opened the door, the interior of the restaurant was truly retro. The lamps were cool. There were several menu options, but it said that the curry base was the same for all, so I opted for the mixed curry with sausage topping. As for the taste, it was retro. Not refined like Indian curry or modern spice curry shops, but retro. Also, it was spicy. Quite spicy. The spiciness might be masking the flavor. As for the ingredients, the beef tendon was delicious. Well stewed, it seemed to be responsible for the flavor of this curry. Spare ribs. These were a bit dry and not great. Shrimp. These were okay. Smaller than expected, they couldn't stand out in flavor. Tomato. This was a nice addition, providing a break from the spiciness. As for the sausage topping, it was average in taste. The plate with just one long sausage at the bottom of the rice was surreal. I think the lack of flavor overall was compensated by the pickles. The retro atmosphere was nice, but the taste was better at modern curry shops, and the prices are higher, so I probably won't go back often. Thank you for the meal.

Gandhi in Shinjuku, Tokyo offers a mild, slightly sweet European-style curry with a medium level of spiciness that is popular among foreigners. Their Braised Beef Tendon Curry costs ¥1280. Follow them on Instagram at tsukasan777 and on Twitter at tsukasan2010.

I finally went to the restaurant I had been curious about. The black curry I had was full of depth and richness when I first tasted it, but as I continued eating, the spiciness hit me like the legendary racehorse Deep Impact, overwhelming my taste buds. It was so spicy that my mouth felt filled with heat, but the spiciness didn't linger, allowing me to finish the dish without hesitation.

In 2019, 2020, and 2022, the top 100 curry restaurants are open every day. I was able to visit this time at night. I arrived around 8:20 PM on Thursday. It was just in time for the last order. The restaurant was empty, with only single diners. I sat at the counter seat by the window. I ordered the Braised Beef Tendon Curry for 1,280 yen. It arrived in just 1 minute, very fast. I poured the curry sauce little by little as I ate. The beef tendon was very tender. The portion size felt a bit small for me. The spices started to kick in with a bit of heat. There was plenty of curry sauce, so I didn't need to adjust it while eating. The spice lingered even after I finished eating, and I enjoyed the aftertaste. Personally, I felt it was a bit lacking in portion size, but the taste was satisfying. Next time, I will order the large size. Thank you for the meal.

Located a 5-7 minute walk from Shinjuku Sanchome Station, Gandhi is a famous European-style curry restaurant tucked away on a back street in Shinjuku. It has been selected as one of the top 100 curry restaurants for three consecutive years since 2019. As you climb the narrow stairs to the second floor, you will find a cozy interior with tables and counter seats, creating a slightly cramped atmosphere. The friendly service from the staff leaves a good impression. This time, I tried the Beef Tendon Stew Curry. Being in Shinjuku, the price is set a bit high at around 1,300 yen. The curry roux is heavily spiced with a strong kick of spiciness and acidity, making it suitable for those who enjoy spicy curries. The tenderly simmered beef tendons also absorbed the bold spiciness and acidity of the curry, creating a harmonious dish. If you like curry with a punchy acidity, be sure to visit this place. Thank you for the meal!

I enjoyed beef tendon curry with cheese topping. The first bite had a bitterness from the spices, the second bite brought out the umami flavor, and from the third bite, I could feel the gradual spiciness. Towards the end, there was a strong spiciness that made my tongue tingle. The beef tendon was tender and delicious.

Mahatma Gandhi, known as the "Father of Indian Independence," was apparently a shy and awkward young man.
For lunch on this day, I visited the long-established curry restaurant "Gandhi" in Shinjuku Sanchome for the first time. The restaurant, founded in 1972, exudes a sense of history with its quaint atmosphere, but the interior is cramped and the seating is not very comfortable. Maybe this is only at the counter? I ordered one of the popular menu items.
"Beef tendon stew curry @ 1,280 yen" *Rice in small portions The curry arrived in a small pot instead of the usual curry pot, along with rice. The waiting time was only 1-2 minutes, very speedy. I tried it immediately and the blend of several spices gave off a fragrant aroma, with a bold and stimulating spiciness from the first bite. As someone who usually enjoys spice levels of 2-3 at CoCo Ichibanya, this level of spiciness was no problem for me, but it might be too spicy for those who are not fans of heat. Rather than savoring the complexity of the ingredients, the taste is relatively simple, so it's best to dig in quickly and enjoy. The beef tendons hidden in the curry were soft and delicious.
Despite not being able to speak English, Gandhi abandoned his wife and children to study in England, but his inherent shyness led to a lonely life without friends. Later, he became a lawyer but struggled to speak in public and ended up unemployed. The achievements we know him for as a great figure came well after he turned 40. Watching his life, I feel hopeful that maybe I'm also a late bloomer.

Shinjuku's long-established restaurant. I entered on Sunday at 3 o'clock hoping it would be empty, but it was almost full. I ordered tomato and cheese curry. Solo diners are always seated at the counter. The spiciness and refreshing taste of the tomato matched well. The Fukujinzuke pickles were the classic red ones in Japan. The restaurant has a surprising pop music playing inside. It's a place where you can easily stop by. When you don't have the time or energy to walk all the way to Kusamakura, this place is a good alternative.

Now, let's climb the ladder of the top 100 restaurants with the Top 100 Boys. No. 3 is Tatsy, and No. 6 is LED Parade Tabi. These two seem to be comedians, as they both wore yellow T-shirts and maybe wanted to eat curry together or were trying to appeal to appear on the 24-hour TV show. As for Gandhi, this curry restaurant highly praised by Goto from the Football Awards on YouTube. The curry is delicious but spicy, and it really opens up your pores. I had been curious about this curry restaurant for a while, and I was completely satisfied.

I visited the restaurant at 6:30 PM on a weekday. The place was empty with only one group, but by the time we finished eating, it was full. The restaurant is small and can accommodate about 5-6 groups. I ordered the mixed curry, which was a Western-style curry. The taste was similar to a high-quality retort curry, and the tomatoes were very flavorful and delicious. I recommend adding cheese on top. It was very spicy, and my throat was tingling after finishing the meal.
