We went to this shop to buy souvenirs. At first, we were going to the side with swings and vehicles from Hikkori Hyouhanto Island, but it said "Sabure is at the opposite shop!" so we crossed the street. There was a sign saying "Yamashita Inn" but I'm not sure if they also offer accommodation. In the shop across the street, they were selling Yellow Hachijo Sabure. We tried a sample and it was delicious. There was a lemon flavor that caught my interest, but they only had large sizes which seemed too big for souvenirs, so I bought mini sabure instead. My husband chose regular packaging for his colleagues at work and Kyon packaging for his cycling friends. The Kyon packaging was very cute, but the Kyon plush toy was a little scary (laughs). We bought just one piece of lemon sabure to eat at the inn. It had lemon powder on it, which was quite sour. Since we don't like sour flavors, we preferred the regular sabure. The shape is cute and it's a unique souvenir from Hachijojima, so I recommend it. They also sell it at the airport, but this shop has a wider variety.

December 2017. Day 2 in Hachijo Island. Checked out of "Reed Park Resort Hachijo Island" and spent the whole day sightseeing on the island. Bought souvenirs at "Eco Agri Mart", visited the top of Hachijo Fuji, had a cafe time at "Green Post", and bought souvenirs at "Hachijo Island Fishing Club" before heading to "Hachijo Mingei Yamashita". Purchased Yellow Hachijo Sablé (mini) 12 pieces for 720 yen and Hachijo Lemon Cake & Passion Cake 5 pieces for 1450 yen. Brought them home and tried them. Hachijo Lemon Cake & Passion Cake: Refreshing acidity with moist texture, both were delicious. Couldn't decide which one I liked better, so it's a tie. Yellow Hachijo Sablé: Shaped like the local textile "Yellow Hachijo", made with flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and salt. Thick with a nostalgic and gentle taste. It was a delightful meal!

In Hachijojima, a specialty product is a woven fabric called "Kihachijo," which is quite a high-end item. Of course, I purchased some Kihachijo, but I also bought other souvenirs. I tried the Kihachijo sablé (20 pieces for 2150 yen), lemon cake, and passion fruit cake (each for 215 yen). The sablé has a strong butter (including margarine) flavor and I think it's more delicious than pigeon sablé! It looks cute and is perfect as a souvenir. The lemon cake and passion fruit cake have the same sponge base, with only the sauce on top being different. The sponge cake part is okay... the sauce is decent, but if you're going to buy something, I recommend the Kihachijo sablé. The sablé and cakes are sold in a new building, while the Kihachijo is sold in an old building across the street. They also have a shop at Hachijojima Airport, so you can purchase them before leaving!

I found a souvenir shop and arrived at the store. They sell Yellow Hachijo Sablé here. Inside the store, there are also folk crafts and other items, but I came here for the Yellow Hachijo Sablé. It's a typical souvenir from Hachijo Island, so I decided to buy it to take home. The taste was like a basic sablé, and it was better than I imagined. It had a good balance, unlike many sablés these days that emphasize butter or milk. This one was really standard, simple, and good. It's been a while since I had such delicious sablé. Thank you for the meal.

This shop is where you can buy "Kihachijo Sablé". It is a genuine sablé made in Hachijo Island, shaped like the kimono of Kihachijo. It is a popular souvenir from Hachijo Island, so you can also find it in souvenir shops on the island. They also sell it at the airport, so be sure to try it. In front of the shop, there are characters from Hachijo Island, such as Don Gabacho, which I personally find cute with its playful atmosphere. Inside the shop, they also sell souvenirs made from Kihachijo textiles. The "Kihachijo Sablé" is not too sweet and easy to eat as it comes in small packets, making it a perfect souvenir. Why not stop by after sightseeing?

Hachijojima is an island located about 30 minutes by plane from Haneda Airport, at the southernmost tip of the Izu Seven Islands. It has a population of about 8,000 people. In Hachijojima, there is a shop called "Hachijo Mingei Yamashita" in Sane, Hachijo Town, about 10 minutes by car from Hachijojima Airport. They sell traditional crafts, genuine Hachijo textiles, and Hachijo sablé cookies.
The Hachijo sablé cookies are a type of sweet treat that originated from Hachijojima. They are made using simple ingredients such as Hachijo butter, margarine, flour, sugar, eggs, and salt. Hachijo textiles are dyed using the natural dyes from plants on the island, creating yellow, brown, and black threads that are then woven into striped or checkered patterns. The Hachijo sablé cookies are shaped like kimonos and feature a checkered pattern to resemble the traditional textiles.
I had tried these cookies about 20 years ago, and when I recently tried them again, I noticed that they had become smaller. Upon researching, I found out that these were the mini version of the Hachijo sablé cookies. I remembered that the regular ones used to cost around 100 yen each, so I had opted for a different souvenir for my workplace due to the cost. The taste hasn't changed much, with a slightly rustic flavor that brings back nostalgic memories.
While many souvenirs labeled as "Hachijojima souvenir" in airport shops may not actually be produced on the island, the Hachijo sablé cookies are indeed made in Hachijojima. This makes them a great choice for souvenirs. I hope this review helps you in choosing souvenirs for your loved ones.
