Summer mornings are a delight as I look forward to visiting a sandwich shop before starting work (remotely). This time, I decided to venture out to Nishi-Nippori Station. Will I make it back in time for work? The thrill of being on the edge is surprisingly enjoyable. (laughs) I arrived at Nishi-Nippori Station around 6:50 am, about a 5-minute walk away. It's located in front of the famous Kaisei Junior and Senior High School. I want to emulate the smart young students, or so I thought as I indulged in the sandwiches. Nearby, I planned to buy some onigiri from Mogami, but they were closed for shutter repairs that day. What a shame! On a weekday morning at 7 am, there were about 5 people waiting. I actually went on a Saturday before and around the same time, there were over 20 people waiting. The turnover is fast, so the line moves steadily, but weekdays might be better after all. Each person buys about 3-4 bags. I bought 5 bags, and they were surprisingly heavy! The sandwiches were much heavier than expected. [Today's purchases] ◆ Mix @ 300 yen I underestimated it. I thought it was a mix of two types of sandwiches, egg and vegetable, but it turned out to be four slices of bread. Bread, egg, bread, vegetable, bread, ham, bread - a double sandwich that you eat in big bites. The tomato slices were as thick as those in Mos Burger. The egg had a rich flavor, but I wanted to savor just the egg more. With this mix, the flavors mixed together, and I couldn't fully enjoy them. Sandwich shops like this one excel in egg sandwiches. I should have just added a separate egg sandwich. The cucumber was pleasantly tangy. The crisp texture was great. The thin ham seemed unnecessary, but it provided a reassuring texture. The egg went well with it. The bread here is fluffy. The egg went all the way to the edges, which was delightful. ◆ Hamburger @ 300 yen The hamburger itself was like a retort pouch, but the tomato did a good job of making it refreshing and easy to eat. However, with the tomato, there was inevitably some liquid that made it soggy, and the bread became mushy. Throughout, I thought, "I should have gotten a minced cutlet instead." I might not buy this again. ◆ Popeye @ 300 yen Surprisingly heavy. (surprised) Why is it called Popeye? It didn't have spinach, but it consisted of ham, cheese, 1/3 of potato salad, 1/3 of egg, and bread. The crisp texture of the cucumber was great. The ham had a smoky aroma and although thin, it still made its presence felt. The bread was fluffy and delicious. ◆ Fruit @ 300 yen I didn't realize bread was so salty. The first part that hits the tongue seems to have saltwater on it. So, the fruit and cream tasted very sweet, and although it was dense, I could eat it without getting tired of it. However, the cream... I just can't seem to find a satisfying cream at these sandwich shops. Is there marshmallow in this? It didn't seem like the typical whipped cream. ◆ Curry Croquette @ 220 yen I couldn't eat it all at once, so I put it in the refrigerator and it became hard. When I toasted it in a hot sandwich maker, it was soft and delicious. Well, it was just a regular soft croquette sandwiched in. There were no surprises. Even if you buy 5, it's only 1420 yen. Cheap! Eating two bags would be filling for a woman. Recently, rice ball shops have become popular, but I also hope that these traditional sandwich shops will increase.
