Today, I had eel in Shibamata for the first time in a while. When it comes to eel in this area, it's usually either Kawasenke or Ebisuya. There was also an old established place called Kawajin, but unfortunately it closed down in 2021. I had visited Kawasenke before, so today I went to Ebisuya. It's famous for being featured in the show "The Lonely Gourmet" when Goro-san visited. I was able to easily get a table in the middle of lunchtime on a holiday. It's mandatory to wear a mask to enter. Of course, I followed the rule, but the way they said it was quite strict, haha. The restaurant is decorated with Ebisu, as the name suggests, and both the exterior and interior are colorful and a bit cluttered. The building exudes a lot of history. The service is no-nonsense and not particularly friendly. They also offer a reasonable set meal with carp and rice cakes, which seemed popular and appetizing. However, I really wanted to have eel, so I chose the eel rice bowl this time. The "upper" eel rice bowl is different in size from the regular one. Today's eel is from Aichi or Shizuoka. It's steamed and charcoal-grilled. ▶︎Ordered Items - Eel Rice Bowl 3960 yen Pickles and eel liver soup were served in about 6 minutes. The eel was a size 5 portion. The steaming was as expected, but the aroma of charcoal was enticing. It was served piping hot. When I tried it, it was much more delicious than I had anticipated, haha. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. The eel was fluffy and tender, melting in the mouth. It had a slightly sticky and chewy texture, slowly melting in the mouth. The right amount of fat spread gently, and the umami of the eel was well pronounced. The steaming and grilling were done meticulously, with a good balance, not too strong or weak. There was no dryness, and the cooking was well done. The clean aroma of charcoal was also nice. It was truly a well-prepared eel from a long-established restaurant. The freshness and quality of the eel were particularly good. The sauce was quite light, not too sweet or spicy, smooth and well-matched with the eel. The balance between the eel and the sauce was good. The rice was on the softer side. I usually don't prefer it that way, but it worked well with the eel here. The sauce was generous, but since the eel was light, it was a good match. The pickles and eel liver soup were average. There was no unpleasant taste in the liver. Considering it's a tourist spot, the prices were reasonable. It's not a surprising taste, but it's quite satisfying. A bit more polite service would make it even better, haha. Payment was cash only. Thank you for the meal!

I used it for lunch. It was a Monday on a weekday, but it was crowded and I waited outside the shop for about 10 minutes. It was scorching hot, but I was forced to wear a mask and waited outside with a mask on. The inside of the shop was not very cool either, and I lost my appetite due to the heat and couldn't eat much. I would like to visit again in winter.

Last year, I tried carp sashimi for the first time at a different restaurant and it was delicious. But the one here was even better, with no fishy smell. Is miso flavor common for carp dishes in Tokyo? In my hometown, soy sauce flavor is more popular, so I was surprised by the miso soup-like carp dish! I thought I was going to eat eel, but it turned out to be a luxurious course meal. #ShibamataGourmet #KatsushikaWardGourmet #Eel #RiverFishDishes #JapaneseCuisine #TokyoGourmet #ShibamataTaishakuten #KatsushikaShibamataTaishakuten #DowntownGourmet #CarpSashimi #CarpDish #EbisuYa #EelDishes #Established230Years #SingleHouseRestaurant

The other day I met a friend in Magome-saginuma. I had originally signed up for a dog tour on a day when she was available during the day. Snowy Mountain Dog Run. However, the tour was canceled because there weren't enough participants (:_;) I really wanted to go~. I even bought shoes and a jacket for the dogs~. So we decided to meet during the day, and we went to Shibamata, which is near my house and seems to be really liked by my friend. It had been a few years since I last visited Shibamata during New Year's. It was crowded on New Year's, so it wasn't very enjoyable. Well, I did enjoy it enough. But I couldn't go into the shops, so we decided to go again. Shibamata Station was so different! It was very clean. There used to be a very old-fashioned coffee shop there (which was lovely in its own way), but it's gone now and there's a Tully's. Oh yeah, before we left, we stopped by Tully's and it was very comfortable. And it's a valuable place in the Shibamata area where there are almost no smoking areas. I think places like this near the river will become famous for eel. There are several shops, but this one is probably the closest to the station. My friend had a strong reaction to the "carp" outside (apparently she had been wanting to eat it for a while), so we went in. The interior of the shop was quite old-fashioned. It felt like it could be in a Tora-san movie. Despite it being a weekend at noon, the inside of the shop wasn't very crowded. Or rather, there weren't that many people outside either, so Shibamata might be a hidden gem for tourists. It was quite enjoyable, surprisingly. Kameari is much more crowded. Even though there's nothing there... We ordered the River Fish Set Meal for 3000 yen. It consisted of eel bowl, carp soup, carp pickled in vinegar, pickles, and grass dumplings. The grass dumplings were crispy and turned into senbei. It was a bit disappointing for someone who likes mochi like me, but the senbei I ate at home later was unexpectedly thin and crispy and delicious. It had been so long since I had carp. The only memory I have is from my late teens. I think it was when I was taken to play in Ome and had carp for lunch at night on a teppanyaki grill. I don't remember the taste. I had an image of it being somewhat fishy or earthy, but it wasn't at all! The carp pickled in vinegar is dipped in a miso sauce. It has a crunchy texture but is light in flavor. Very delicious. The carp soup was also good. The miso soup was rich and tasty. The eel was plump and delicious, but I wish it had a bit more sauce, as the flavor was a bit bland and the rice was left over. I highly recommend the River Fish Set Meal. My perception of carp has changed.

I was looking forward to trying the grilled carp at Ebisuya on the approach to Shibamata Taishakuten during my tour of Tokyo's historic establishments, but unfortunately they were out of stock. The eel restaurant in the tourist area felt more like a tourist trap, with the eel itself lacking flavor and the sauce overpowering. The liver sashimi and pickles seemed to be seasoned with commercial condiments. The service was also poor, barely at an acceptable level for a tourist spot. I hope they can preserve the history they have built up without ruining it. Thank you for the meal.

We enjoyed sightseeing in Shibamata before having lunch here. There were two of us. It was lunchtime on a holiday, so there were about 10 people waiting in line. There was a sign mentioning that this restaurant had been featured on "The Lonely Gourmet," which I think was a factor in attracting customers (myself included). We bought dango on the approach to Taishakuten before waiting about 30 minutes to be seated. We ordered the River Fish Set Meal (3,000 yen) and the Eel Rice Bowl (3,900 yen). The dishes arrived after about a 10-minute wait. I had the River Fish Set Meal, which came with an eel rice bowl, carp sashimi, and carp miso soup. The eel rice bowl was delicious, with fluffy eel. The carp sashimi, eaten with vinegar miso, was refreshing and tasty. The carp miso soup had a rich miso flavor, and it could easily be eaten with a bowl of rice. The Eel Rice Bowl was also generously portioned and delicious. Although it was a bit pricey, it was a thoroughly enjoyable restaurant.

I wanted to eat not only eel but also various other things, so I chose the river fish set meal. It came with carp sashimi, carp soup, and grass dumplings for dessert, and the amount of rice was just right. The fluffy texture of the eel was very delicious. Even though it was past 11 o'clock, the place quickly filled up with people, but turnover was fast as people didn't stay long. The grilling time was also not that long.

I went to "Ebisuya," an eel and Japanese cuisine restaurant in Shibamata, Katsushika-ku, Tokyo, located on the Shibamata Taishakuten Omotesando, around 12:30 on a Sunday for lunch. I was dining alone and had been curious about this restaurant in Shibamata Taishakuten Omotesando. Upon entering the restaurant, I sanitized my hands and took a seat. The restaurant has 5 four-person table seats, 2 two-person table seats, 2 four-person sunken kotatsu-style seats, and 1 two-person seat. Since I was dining alone, I sat at a two-person table seat. As I looked around, I noticed photos from the filming of the movie "Tora-san" and it seems that the owner had a role in the movie. There were also photos of the restaurant from the Taisho era. I looked at the menu and decided to order the River Fish Set Meal for 3,000 yen including tax, as I wanted to try eel, carp sashimi, and carp soup. After about 10 minutes, the River Fish Set Meal was served. I was delighted to have carp sashimi again and enjoyed it with vinegar miso. The fresh carp sashimi had a unique texture and was delicious. I then opened the lid of the eel bowl and sprinkled some sansho pepper. The eel was plump, warm, tender, and the sweet sauce was delicious. The carp soup was quite rich in miso flavor, with plenty of tender carp meat in the soup. "Ebisuya" in Shibamata Taishakuten Omotesando offers delicious eel and carp dishes in a historic setting, making it highly recommended! On New Year's Day, while walking along the approach to Shibamata Taishakuten, a huge rake caught my eye. Curious, I checked out the food samples displayed outside a restaurant and found they were serving a special carp meal set. It was quite unusual and even though I hadn't planned on eating in Shibamata, the auspicious name of the restaurant convinced me to have a late lunch there. It was 2:30 pm and about 70% of the seats were taken. You choose your meal based on the samples outside, then pay at the entrance before being seated. There was no menu at the reception, so I panicked a bit trying to remember the names of the dishes. Inside, there were large rakes displayed and a commemorative photo of Tora-san, so while waiting for our food to arrive, my companion and I took some photos to soak in the nostalgic atmosphere. I ordered the River Fish Meal Set, which included carp soup, carp sashimi, and eel rice bowl, while my companion got the Shibamata Meal with sashimi and eel. Both sets cost 3000 yen. The carp soup had a delicate flavor with no muddy taste, which was different from what I had before. The vinegar miso sauce was also delicious, I even dipped the tail in it. The carp sashimi was a bit on the salty side, but with this less fishy carp, a lighter flavor might work too. The eel was cooked in a light Kanto style, with a subtly sweet sauce. It was a refreshing change from the overly sweet eel dishes I've had recently. After we left, we saw the handsome staff playing rock-paper-scissors to decide who would clean the tables. It was a lively scene, a testament to their youth.

Located on the approach to the Tenso Shrine from the Katsushika Shibamata Shopping Street, "Ebisu-ya" is an eel restaurant that was featured in the TV shows "The Lonely Gourmet" and "Moya Moya Summers 2." I had always wanted to visit this place, so when I saw an empty table on my way back from visiting the shrine, I couldn't resist going in. The interior of the restaurant is like stepping back in time to the Showa era, with a menu offering dishes like eel rice bowls, tempura sets, and sashimi sets. I decided to try the "upper eel rice bowl," purchased a meal ticket at the counter, and eagerly waited for my food. When the dish arrived, the eel was tender and flavorful, with a delicious sweet and savory sauce. This hidden gem of a restaurant offers a taste of the beloved flavors of the old downtown area. Personally, I prefer unassuming eateries like this one over high-end establishments when it comes to enjoying eel. As I savored my meal, I watched as the evening crowd started to gather outside, creating a lively atmosphere for my slightly belated New Year's visit.

I visited this restaurant for a gathering with friends. We enjoyed a variety of dishes such as vinegar dishes, grilled white fish, and eel rice bowls. It was my first time realizing that eel can be enjoyed in so many different ways. The dishes, including the sashimi, were all delicious and we were able to enjoy the service of this long-established restaurant. It's a bit far from my home, but I would love to go back for more delicious eel. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

When it comes to Shibamata, I'm not a fan of that movie. I don't dislike the atmosphere, but I think the culture difference between Musashino and downtown is interesting. I usually stick to the western part of Tokyo for my activities, so I'm not very familiar with downtown areas. I visited the area at the end of 2020 when I didn't go home due to the COVID-19 situation, and this time I had some business in the Kanamachi area, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to go with my wife and have some eel. I sometimes try out new restaurants, but if I like a place, I tend to go back there. This time, I visited an established restaurant facing the approach. It's a place where you can find a high-end restaurant on one side and a traditional Japanese restaurant on the other. It's quite down-to-earth. The price of eel dishes, not just here, has been on the rise for a while. In the autumn of 2021, as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, there seemed to be a bit of liveliness returning with many visitors celebrating Shichi-Go-San. I'm not a fan of crowds, so I went in right after they opened. By the time I left before noon, more and more customers were coming in, and it seemed busy. Now, about the eel dish. I like both Kanto-style and Kansai-style eel dishes. There's no right or wrong answer here. I haven't eaten eel at many places, but this one had a subtle sweetness and a refined taste. Despite being a down-to-earth traditional Japanese restaurant, the historical feel of the establishment might make you mistake it for a high-end place... It's a longstanding, established restaurant on the approach to a tourist temple. I enjoyed the meal. Thank you for the feast!

Located on the approach to the Tenjin Shrine, just a short walk from Shibamata Station, this restaurant exudes a sense of history with its spacious interior and raised seating areas. The eel here is plump and satisfying, and the Shibamata set meal offers a variety of dishes including eel and sashimi, providing a sense of contentment. The sauce is relatively mild in sweetness, making it easy to eat and refreshing.

I missed out on the eel at Naritasan Omotesando, so I decided to go for eel at Ebisuya in Shibamata as recommended by a friend. It was quite crowded during the lunchtime of the four-day weekend. I couldn't decide between the eel rice bowl or the river fish set, but I chose the river fish set because I could also try the carp sashimi. The eel was fluffy and delicious! Maybe I should have gone for the eel rice bowl next time. Thank you for the meal!

In the summer, you start craving eel, right? I think eel in the winter must be fattier, but my body craves it. I went to a restaurant with some acquaintances to eat eel in Shibamata. We also did a little sightseeing in Shibamata and Asakusa. The eel at this restaurant has a light sauce, easy to eat without feeling heavy. I prefer a slightly sweeter sauce, but it was still good. I wanted to have eel with Japanese sake, but of course, we are in a state of emergency so I had to resist. I like the traditional Japanese house style of the restaurant, it's very calming. If you ever visit Shibamata, be sure to stop by this place!

I had some Katsushika Premium Vouchers that were expiring soon, so I decided to use them here. I ordered the River Fish Set Meal (2,750 yen) and the Eel Rice Bowl (4,000 yen). The River Fish Set Meal came with a small eel bowl with carp miso soup and carp sashimi. The grilled eel was tender and flavorful, although I could feel some small bones. The carp miso soup was rich in color but had a refreshing taste, and the carp sashimi was soft and easy to eat with the bones. The eel rice bowl was firm and had a nice chewy texture. I enjoyed it with the vinegar miso sauce.

I visited a passing by eel restaurant. There were various options like eel and tempura. The interior of the restaurant was spacious, in an old building. I ordered an eel rice bowl, and it arrived in about 12 minutes. The smell of eel was wonderful. When I opened the lid, the eel looked so delicious. It was fluffy and tasty, even the skin. Eel is definitely delicious. The sauce was also tasty. The eel liver was also delicious. I want to eat it again. Thank you for the meal.

On the evening of March 25th, the Tokyo Governor held a press conference urging people not to go out unnecessarily, which was about 10 hours before the visit to Shibamata Taishakuten by the writer and his wife. The writer had to take a day off as he had very few paid leave days left. Despite being constantly asked to work even on his day off, he decided to turn off his computer and go outside for some fresh air. At around 10 am, Shibamata Station was almost deserted, with only a few people around. Many shops on the approach were closed or just opening. The writer felt the gaze of the few people walking by as they were called out to by the shopkeepers. The atmosphere at Taishakuten Temple was quiet, with only the sound of chanting echoing. The staff at Yamamoto-tei expressed their frustration at the lack of customers. The writer then visited the Tora-san Museum and enjoyed reminiscing about the famous character. For lunch, they went to a traditional Japanese restaurant called Ebisu-ya, where they ordered fish and eel set meals. The retro atmosphere of the restaurant reminded the writer of old dining establishments in rural areas. Despite being lunchtime, there were only a few customers in the restaurant. The writer enjoyed the well-cooked fish and eel dishes, although the eel was a bit bony. The writer noted that the atmosphere in the restaurant was a bit gloomy, likely due to the difficult circumstances faced by the staff. The writer empathized with the challenges faced by businesses in tourist areas, not just bars and nightclubs. The writer hopes for a quick improvement in the situation so that businesses can thrive again.

I didn't have much luck with finding good restaurants in the shitamachi area, but a friend recommended it so I decided to make a detour to Kanamachi. It was worth it. Shibamata is right in the middle of a tourist spot. When I visited, it was past the lunch rush so I was able to enjoy a leisurely time in a calm atmosphere. I tried the eel rice bowl on the menu... The grilling of the eel and the sauce were just right, and it paired well with the rice. This is important. There are many places where the eel is good but the rice is lacking. The eel rice bowl is not cheap, but it is worth the price. It was a good time, including the atmosphere of the shitamachi area.
