ココ マドモアゼル
Located in Ookayama, this bakery is known for its signature item, the cascoulette, a small baguette sandwich filled with various fillings. They prioritize balancing textures, even altering the bread dough depending on the filling. With 45 unique fillings, their creativity shines. The name "Itokito" combines the owner's son's name, "Ito," and a dialect term meaning "fresh fish," expressing a wish for the shop's enduring vitality. Payment is cash only.
Situated a 3-minute walk from Ookayama Station, just off the north exit shopping street, the bakery features a white exterior with a white sign and a cute interior highlighted by blue tiles. The owner, Mr. Katsuno, studied architecture in art school, evident in the tasteful design. The compact interior fills up quickly, with bread displayed on the counter.
Their specialty is sandwiches, including those with seasonal fruits and cascoulettes with pork or chicken, crafted with expertise from the chef's training at "Bistro Mikami" in Naka-Meguro. Chef Katsuno has even published a book on "Itokito's French-style sandwiches."
Today, I bought the "Pain au Chocolat" and the recommended "Chicken Sandwich." The Chicken and Asparagus with Basil Sauce sandwich offers a healthy option with steamed chicken and asparagus combined with homemade basil sauce and mayonnaise. The bread is firm yet soft, providing a satisfying bite, while the refreshing basil flavor is addictive.
The Pain au Chocolat, made with croissant dough blended with fermented butter and wrapped around French baton chocolate, is crisp with a rich buttery aroma.
Comparing it to other popular bakeries nearby, Itokito's Pain au Chocolat is the largest, followed by Van de Lude, Comme’N, and Cupid. In terms of color, Comme’N has the darkest crust, followed by Van de Lude, Itokito, and Cupid. For crispiness, Van de Lude ranks highest, followed by Itokito, Cupid, and Comme’N. In terms of buttery flavor, Van de Lude leads, followed by Itokito, with Comme’N and Cupid tying.
