This is a long-established senbei (rice cracker) shop founded in 1915 in Tani-naka. They use carefully selected rice and authentic soy sauce, and hand-bake each senbei using Kishu Binchotan charcoal. The origin is said to be from Soka Senbei. The shop is located about 3-4 minutes from Nezu Station. From the Nezu Ichome intersection, head straight on Gondo-dori, and you will find the shop on the left corner of the intersection, in a traditional Japanese house. I visited in the afternoon. They have a variety of senbei, from round hard-baked senbei to arare (bite-sized senbei). The flagship product is the large-sized hard-baked senbei (soy sauce), and they also offer 5 regular sizes (soy sauce, sesame, seaweed, mustard, shrimp). The large size comes in simple packaging (300 yen) or a pack of 2 (600 yen), while the regular size is a pack of 5 (700 yen). The shelf life, except for the simple packaging, is about 2 months (prices include tax). I bought the following items (prices include tax). Hand-baked senbei (1 piece, 300 yen) comes in a convenient plastic bag for eating on the go. It is sold in a glass container with a lid, and sometimes it sells out. The diameter is about 12.1-12.5 cm. I was impressed by the size when I held it in my hand! You can either take a bite with a part of it out of the bag or break it inside the bag. I broke it inside the bag and enjoyed it! It has a crispy texture, not too thin or too thick, with a savory soy sauce flavor and saltiness from the charcoal grilling. Despite its appearance, it feels light, and I finished it quickly. The shelf life of the simple packaging is about 1 week. For souvenirs, the pack of 2 (600 yen) with longer shelf life is a safe choice. They are fragile, so be careful when carrying them around. Sesame senbei (5 pieces, 700 yen) is a hard-baked senbei with black sesame seeds. Each senbei has a different level of puffiness, showing the hand-baked finish. The savory flavor of black sesame lingers on the palate. It was a delightful encounter with this senbei shop that caught my eye with its traditional appearance. The taste was as expected, delicious.
