S-san, who had reached retirement age in the same department at work a few years ago, had been working as a temporary employee. Due to family circumstances, S-san decided to retire this year. Although our interaction was limited to the workplace, I had been shown photos of his children's wedding and recently born grandchild, and we had a relatively close relationship. So, as a token of appreciation, we decided to give him a commemorative gift as a team, but I personally chose a small item to give to his wife. The reason for this was that last year, S-san's wife was diagnosed with an illness, which was the reason for his retirement. When I heard about his wife's condition, I could see the emotions welling up in S-san, and he tried to hide it with a smile, saying, "I might cry if I talk about it more." I could only say, "It will be okay! Definitely okay!" Sports-loving, always cheerful, and often joking around with me, I saw a side of S-san that I had never seen before. I could sense what the illness might be, but I didn't ask for details, and I decided not to ask further. Perhaps S-san felt a resistance to acknowledging something within himself by mentioning the illness, and that's why he hesitated to talk about it. After that, his wife went in and out of the hospital several times, and she was scheduled for another hospitalization this spring. S-san wanted to retire before that and go on a trip. On his last day at the office, he received a bouquet and a commemorative gift from the team representative. After receiving individual greetings and feeling a bit embarrassed, he was about to leave when I casually handed the gift to his wife. S-san received it with gratitude, and a few days later, I received a thank-you email along with three $5 Starbucks drink coupons. I hadn't intended for this, and I felt sorry for receiving thanks, but I decided to graciously accept and use them. I always drink soy lattes at Starbucks, but this time, I decided to enjoy Frappuccinos in three different flavors. The first was a Banana Banana Frappuccino, topped with banana sugar, sauce, and fruit chunks, overflowing with banana flavor. The second was a Choco Banana Frappuccino, with additional chocolate whipped cream and colorful chocolates, giving it a more snack-like feel. The third was a Coffee Frappuccino, a simple yet delicious drink that allowed me to savor the taste of coffee. Starbucks is known for its Frappuccinos, but I also find their coffee to be delicious. After retiring, S-san occasionally sends me emails, and he seems to be doing well. Through S-san, I can sense that his wife's condition is not worsening. The attached photos of his growing grandchild bring a smile to my face, and as I enjoy my Frappuccinos, I hope that S-san's future will be filled with smiles as well. This is a record of my gratitude.
